- Alan GEpsom, United Kingdom33 contributionsFascinating visit.Very interesting and informative. Very knowledgeable and entertaining guides who themselves are ex submariners. It was enjoyable, but at the same time concerning as the conditions were obviously tough. The young children lived through the telescope etc., so yes I would recommend it totally. There is a lot to see so come prepared !Visited July 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 29 July 2024
- Ward FamilyPortsmouth, United Kingdom3 contributionsSuper SubmarineReally interesting guided tour of the submarine. The two tour guides were excellent - one was Doug, didn't catch the name of the other man. HMS Alliance is kept in a lovely condition. We went as a family with two children - 6yr & 1yr old. The submarine is NOT buggy/pram friendly at all. We were expecting this, so baby went into a sling for the trip. I wouldn't do this trip with only very young children (under 5yrs). Busy Boats Bay nearby at the Submarine Museum site was great for the children to play in afterwards.Visited August 2024Travelled with familyWritten 11 August 2024
- Emma TSouthwater, United Kingdom76 contributionsWonderful insight into life on a subWe got left behind in a group of people visiting HMS Alliance and it really paid off! We ended up with our own personal tour with a wonderfully knowledgeable man, Rob. We got to see how the powerful supercharged 8-cylinder diesel engine worked and even got to look through the periscope! We got a real insight into how the sub worked and how the crew lived and worked out at sea. Although a visit to Alliance only takes about 40 minutes we both really enjoyed it. We have Ultimate Explorer tickets and we both agree that HMS Alloance and HMS Warrior are our top 2 attractions. Thanks Rob for your time and expertise, it really made our visit on board amazing. Sadly, Trip Advisor won’t let me add my photos so you’ll have to go see it for yourself!Visited August 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 7 September 2024
- zuvBucharest, Romania40,133 contributionsVery interestingIt is part of the Royal Navy Submarine Museum. It can only be visited as part of a guided tour. As a result, even if you have a ticket that includes all the museums in Gosport and the Historic Dockyards in Portsmouth, you still have to go to the museum ticket office for an appointment. The bad part is this is not written anywhere... and I found it out only after standing in line for about 10 minutes at the access stairs to the submarine, right after we got off the waterbus that brought us from Portsmouth. Anyway, I lost some time but I got over it. Access is done in relatively small groups, but, in my opinion, still a bit too big for how tight the place is. If you want to take pictures (as was my case) you have to stay a little behind the group, otherwise you won't be able to get an OK frame because of the crowding. The problem is that, in this case, you lose out on interesting explanations. In addition, you are also pressed by the next group, which comes from behind. Anyway, the visit is well worth it, it's very interesting!Visited July 2024Travelled soloWritten 17 September 2024

This was an opportunity to see what life was like on a WW2 submarine. Our guides were ex- submariners who brought the whole experience to life with their stories of a tough life in submarines. A truly fascinating experience.

Interesting place to visit and the staff were very informative and ex submarines. Our teenage boys found it very interesting and especially liked looking through the periscopes. They were even kind enough to turn the lights off inside so that they could see and feel what it was like when the submarine went into action stations and take pictures. You also didn't feel like you were been rushed through and were encouraged to ask questions.

This is a must sea! Apart from the submarine being a fascinating boat to go around the guides who escort you are knowledgeable and in our case a former submariner. An insight into the life of personnel on board a sub is hard to come by and the opportunity to look around should be taken. This does require you to be able to go upstairs and be able to handle enclosed spaces, but it is well worth it. Really cannot recommend enough, it was the highlight of our trip (which was planned solely to go round the naval museums in Portsmouth/Gosport).

We were in a group of 24 that toured the submarine but that was twice as many people as there should be in such cramped conditions. The tour guide was excellent but when he was explaining things in the Control Room some folk were stuck in a queue in the corridor and couldn’t hear never mind see what was going on. The young man on the desk in the visitor centre was not sympathetic and offered no apology.

Interesting tour led by retired submariner Doug. Obviously Doug knew what he was talking about and the walk through tour of the Submarine kept our attention the whole time with lots of interesting facts about life on board a diesel and battery powered vessel. The site has other interesting exhibits and displays and was worth the short trip across from Portsmouth to Gosport and walk from the terminal. In summer transport is provided across the harbour . Booked on line as part of the Historic Dockyards Ticket. Worth noting the winter opening hours on the website. Would definitely recommend to all.

We acquired the full navy pass that we enjoyed a lot in portsmouth which included the visit to the HMS Alliance, unfortunately the ship that connects between both sides was not operational at this time, so we had to go by car (free parking at the entrance of the Museum). It was certainly worth the walk since it is impressive to be able to tour the submarine and the museum, in addition, as we went on weekdays, there was almost no one and we could enjoy a great private visit with Jhon who is a majestic man with a lot of experience manning submarines and that he decided to solve all the doubts and make us a great visit (thanks Jhon)

Time your climb up the steps so that there are no long queues and you can take everything in. The museum guides are very helpful and knowledgeable. The two on duty on the day we visited had both served on submarines. There is more room on board than first imagined but there are trip hazards and plenty of submarine parts to step over. It's so shiny that you get great photos when on board.

I have an interest in engineering and anything to do with WW2, so this was always going to be an interesting visit for me. I was not disappointed - as a visitor you have virtually complete access to all areas within the submarine, and the guides are terrific. The two that we met during our visit were ex submariners, and provided fantastic detail and insight into life on board a submarine. these guys were volunteers, so many thanks for your time.
All the staff on site were helpful and cheerful.
Totally recommended.
Top tip - spend a few more quid and buy the Ultimate Explorer Ticket - brilliant value.

I'm sorry to see that this review is the first "Terrible" review this museum has, but it deserves it. We arrived after driving a long way through Gosport (which is an absolute dump of a town) and were told that it was guided tours only on the submarine. This was a complete surprise and totally unacceptable. Nowhere in their leaflets does it state that this museum is guided tours only and if it had we wouldn't have bothered driving miles to get to it. The guided tour only thing was for 'elf and safety apparently - though at the weekends it is self-guided.....maybe weekdays are more dangerous than weekends?? Who knew eh? We cannot do guided tours due to one of our kids being unable to stand still for any time at all. The staff said they "understood" our issue, and were polite, but in the end, we decided as a family that a 40 min guided tour would be a nightmare, so as usual and disappointingly only some of us got to go on the tour. Lucky we did split as the tour ended up lasting 1 hour 10 mins. Whilst the guide was great - a volunteer too, the rest of the family waiting outside froze and were upset because they wanted to go on the Submarine too. So, Royal Navy Submarine Museum - you need to tell people on your leaflets that it is guided tours only. It is not acceptable in any way to not tell people this small but vitally important piece of info. Not everyone has family who can stand still and listen.

We visited the submarine as part of our overall visit to the historic dockyard. Our ticket included the short ferry trip.
The visit to the submarine was fascinating and the guides were really interesting and informative. We learnt a lot about living conditions on board how to evacuate in an emergency.
The other exhibits on the same site were really interesting too.
Our only negative was the scheduling and queueing system for the return ferry. We finished our tour at 12.20 and narrowly missed the 12.30. The queue for the 1.30 ferry started immediately and people joining after 1.00 did not get on this boat. Frustrating to spend time waiting in a line rather than enjoying the exhibits. This could easily be fixed by allowing people to nominate a return ferry time, guaranteeing them entry and avoiding the pointless queueing.

On behalf of a former HMS Alliance submariner, can any one tell me if there are any 'reunions or special days' planned for Alliance veteran?
