- Dave W4 contributionsBrilliantAbsolutely brilliant! The staff and volunteers are by far the most helpful and welcoming people you could ever wish to meet. This heritage railway sets the gold standard that others should try and achieve. It is by no means the biggest heritage line, but it has a big heart and bags of character. We will definitely be backVisited March 2023Written 26 March 2023
- Laura8192Swadlincote, United Kingdom140 contributionsFantastic activity, a hidden gemToday we took a trip on the Welsh Highland Heritage Railway Welsh Highland Heritage Railway / Rheilffordd Ucheldir Cymru, Porthmadog . This is not to be confused with the Welsh Highland Railway or the Ffestiniog railway which are the trains that do longer journeys to Beddgelert and other places. The Heritage railway is a mainly volunteer run organisation. It cost us £28 as our youngest child was under 3 so free, but a family ticket is only £30 so really reasonable we thought. Its an hours experience with around 15 minutes on the train and 45 minutes to explore the museum. You can ride as many times as you like in a day on your ticket. We found it really interesting, the staff really engaged with the children at every step of the way, letting our eldest child stamp her own ticket and involving them in turning the engine for the return journey. There is lots for the children to do at the museum too, activities, trains to climb on and a mini railway that also does trips (included in the main ticket price). The gift shop was well stocked, with lots of pocket money treats at reasonable prices and again the staff were so welcoming. There is also a cafe (which we didn't use but has good reviews). All in all, if you have young children and want a fun activity that doesn't cost the earth, I'd highly recommend this.Visited May 2022Travelled with familyWritten 4 April 2023
- danchapman31Nottingham, United Kingdom87 contributions10/10 experience 🚂💨What can I say, just an amazing experience! All my life I’ve loved steam trains and this experience ticked a bucket list experience for me 😊 the railway is kept in excellent condition, easy to navigate and all staff/volunteers very friendly! We did the Woodland Wanderer Route which took 2 1/2 hours in total…I can’t wait to return and do anotherrouteVisited May 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 14 May 2023
- Hannah4 contributionsFantastic little railway run by lovely volunteersThis was a fantastic way to spend an afternoon. The train runs to the end of the line (a relatively short distance but it is advertised as such) and then returns stopping at a museum on the way back. There are no worries about being stuck at the museum waiting for the next train as there often are at other heritage railways as the train waits until everyone has had chance to look around. The museum itself was fantastic. Locomotives you could climb inside, plenty of small scale models and an old saw were some highlights. This was brought to life by our wonderful guard / guide John who was available to answer questions and show everyone around. The guard then checked everyone was safely back on the train before continuing back to Porthmadog. The museum had plenty to entertain children but also plenty for adults. All the volunteers in the shop, museum and on trains were extremely friendly and welcoming.Visited May 2023Travelled with familyWritten 30 May 2023
- StG3 contributionsOld fashioned charm…Good experience travelling on the railway but an unfortunate parking experience. A small car park at the station and an attendant trying to manage the flow. He directed us to another car park a few minutes walk away but when I arrived there my car wouldn’t fit under the height restriction barrier so had to return to the station car park. The attendance was dismissive and quite frankly irritated by my car…. He then went on to direct my car and ask another driver to park behind me…. I have a Landrover with an outwards opening door so need clearance for the dogs in the rear of the car. Again, rolled his eyes and was dismissive. My daughter asked to park next to me with her 4 year old child and was told to park some distance away. When we asked why? …. He told us that only ‘blue badge holders’ were allowed in the car park! Really?? Only 1 of approximately 30 cars had a blue badge!!! So no parent/ child parking at all!! Really not acceptable in todays world! A good old fashioned journey and experience on the wonderful railway but a very old fashioned, dated and almost rude car park worker with little insight into todays family needs! Just be aware that it requires a walk of over 5 minutes with young children( especially in the pouring rain!)Visited July 2023Travelled with familyWritten 15 July 2023
- Tom H2 contributionsGreat family experience. One of the highlights of our trip.! Great experience, you can tell the volunteers really enjoy being there and doing what they do. They involve the children in changing the points and handing the token to the driver when the loco changes ends. The museum is really well done, lots to look at and jump on a couple of locos. Recommended.Visited July 2023Travelled with familyWritten 1 August 2023

Great ride on the miniature railway! The museum is fun as there is lots to do and you can climb on the trains and there is no stuffiness. The staff are friendly and helpful. You can keep riding the train all day. Can recommend.Visited July 2023Travelled with familyWritten 2 August 2023

It honestly gets better and better every visit. Lost count how many journeys I had as I was just having the time of my life. Whether you're a train enthusiast or not, a visit here will certainly having you coming out as one or as more of one, guaranteed. Just everything that's involved in your day/ticket: Unlimited rides. It is step back in time and showcases some great railway engineering over the Welsh countryside. The grade is steep in parts and there are plenty of challenges through the terrain. Travelling in the first class carriage is highly recommended.Visited August 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 25 August 2023
- MPRobtBangor, United Kingdom6 contributionsWelsh Highland Railway experienceThis has been on the bucket list of my wife and I for quite some time. As we were off we thought we'd give it a go. The train was 20 minutes late leaving Caernarfon which was a inconvenience but not that much of a problem. It was a really hot day and the carriages soon became mini saunas, everybody was hot and red and uncomfortable. The snack/drink on board was reasonably priced and the staff were helpful. By the time we reached Porthmadog the heat was almost unbareable and we were glad to get off. After our 1.5 hours in Porthmadog (enough time to eat our picnic and have an ice cream) it was time to get back on board. The carriages were sweltering even before we started off and it just got worse at the journey back to Caernarfon progressed. We went through a tunnel at one point which filled the carriages with thick smoke and left everyone covered in a sheen of gritty soot. By this time even the staff were struggling to cope with the heat! By the time we got to Caernarfon nobody seemed to be enjoying the trip and everyone was complaining about the soot which just clung to everyone's exposed, sweaty arms, legs and faces. Yes I appreciate that the railway isn't in control of the weather and the days temperature, but some allowances should have been made to improve customer comfort under such circumstances. I'm glad I made the journey, but it was not an enjoyable experience. It is not something I would do again.Visited August 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 7 September 2023

Delightful trip! Lovely day out from Porthmadog to Caernarfon, well worth the extra for the observation car. Even though we went on a misty day the views were still incredible. Will have to come back to do Porthmadog to Ffestiniog!

●●●●PLEASE BE AWARE●●●●●●.....after paying £31 for 2 adults and child...
We felt seriously ripped off,We was TOLD the train journey was short,BUT honestly not 8 mins total journey time..on/off before you know it.....4 mins to the museum (shed)..which was well set up and allows you to look in old steam trains and things you can interact with and look at some history which is nice...(Didnt really benifit my 14 year old). After Around 30-40 mins in museum. There is a small train for toddlers which goes just as far as the larger train which we managed to watch others go on,and failed to go on cus of time, then back on train 4mins return.
The place is nicely set out and lovely trains and friendly people..but journeyon a lovely train is massive disappointment...
●○●○●○○At the end of the street by the harbour,Ensure you visit the FFESTINIOG WELSH HIGHLAND RAILWAY...You pay for what you get amazing journey options we did woodland 2 hours+ journey time..,lucky we caught a last train here or else our day would of been let down by the first railway we visited.°•○•○•○•
Others felt let down by the experience of the heritage railway just by hearing others conversations.
We was told our ticket could be used again and again..i can see why,This is not a day out People on a tight budget need to be aware of this,Whole experience 1 hour
Try not to make the mistake we did if your looking for a steam train ride.....

Really lovely place to visit. Very friendly and knowledgeable staff.
The train journey is quite short, but on the return journey you stop as a great museum with lots of hands on fun for children and adults. There is also a mini railway which everyone is welcome to have a go on (not just children)
The ticket is valid all day, so we did one trip, then had lunch and a walk and then went around again :)
There is a good sized free carpark, decent toilets and a nice cafe.
A really enjoyable experience all round

Twenty-five pounds for a 10 minute train ride is never going to make for a great day out. We spent more time sitting on platforms than travelling on trains! A shame.

Hi, how big is the museum & is it more geared up for young families? We are thinking of coming for a visit (6 x adults & 1 well behaved dog). Thanks!

There is the station café/gift shop at one end of the line and the actual museum + garden railway at the other. The museum is fairly big, about 1-2 football pitches in size. Everything is geared toward families with younger children, from the exhibits to the length of the line itself (0.75 miles, not long at all), especially compared to the other trains in Porthmadog.

Can you fit a double buggy on the train?
Yes, but you might have to put it in the guard's van.

Is the train disabled friendly. My wife has to travel by scooter (mid range) and cant handle climbing in and out of carriges.
We carry a wheel chair ramp and have a carriage with wide doors.
The crew will always be willing to assist.
Hi can you take a pram on board? Thinking about coming here with a 4 year old and a 8/10 week old (not born yet) in July. Thank you

Just in case no-one else comments, Keith said "they might let you repeat the trip on the same ticket" - I suspect that was said a bit "tongue in cheek" as all tickets for the Welsh Highland Heritage Railway are valid all day, with the exception of some special events (like the Santa Specials and evening Halloween Trains). You can ride all day if you wish, some families do! (Jane Partridge, Shedmaster)

Where is the museum and miniature railway? What journey route is that? Its sounds a nice place to stop off.

Visitors buy tickets and board the train at Porthmadog. The station is at the north end of town, across the High Street from the main line railway station, so it's a walk from the F&WHR station. WHHR trains run "out and back" excursions with a short stop at Gelert's Farm that gives you enough time to look around the museum.
