Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

This is a great museum located in the last surviving slate warehouse on the harbour.

Watching the introductory video as we entered gave us a rundown of Porthmadog, its shipping and shipbuilding background and trading history in a short 20-minutes.

It was great to learn about William Madocks and his role in the sea wall construction and how this helped to develop the slate industry, railway and town.

All the artefacts were very cool. I saw things I had never seen before like the miniature machine for measuring tides. Definitely head here if you are new to Porthmadog.
It's a great way to get to know the town!

Folks who complain about a £2 entry fee have no idea what it takes to run a museum, especially small independent organisations run by hardworking volunteers. It costs money to keep the lights too. I gladly contributed to help their admirable efforts to keep the history of Porthmadog alive! Well done!

I agree with the person from Trinidad and Tobago £2 is such good value for this wonderful little museum
We really enjoyed our visit. It was very informative. The staff were so kind and well informed. They made us very welcome.
The video was very very informative, and then the displays reinforced the message that the museum was giving It is so good to have a local museum devoted to the history and make up of the town
Well done

Anyone interested in the History of Porthmadog should pay a visit to this small but well-laid-out Museum. It's name
suggests the fact that the Town only exists because of the access the location provides to the Sea, specifically for the
export of Welsh Slate.

There is a Video presentation, about 15 minutes long, which summarises the History of the Town. After that you can browse
the exhibits, which provide further insight into the History of the Town and it's People.

The Museum is located on the ground floor, in the Harbour Area, a short walk from the Town Centre.

The Adult entry fee is very reasonable, Major Credit Cards are Accepted.

We popped in here having read about it on trip advisor - what a little gem. The two gentlemen on the desk (both volunteers) were really helpful and chatty, and extremely knowledgeable. The displays were very well presented and informative, and it is definitely worth a visit

Great history into industry of Porthmadog docks. £3 for two of us and given a kids quiz as well. Even got an area for kids to dress up.

Great for families, though small it will give to a short and enjoyable history.

Once my 6 year old finished the quiz the kind patrons marked and allowed my child to ring the ships bell as a prize.

I stumbled upon the museum whilst looking for the tourist info centre (gone). The 10 min video explaining the history of Porthmadog is worth watching, but the exhibits are run of the mill. Not sure if it’s worth the £2 entrance fee.
They do however have some tourist info leaflets as do Tesco at the he other end of town.

Visited here under duress from my wife and really wasn’t my thing. Had to pay to visit and again was less impressed but the volunteering team that run the museum had me and my “I don’t want to do anything” teenagers engaged and enjoying the history of boats/ Porthmadog. Great place to visit and again the volunteers were world class.

This museum is located directly adjacent to the harbour at Porthmadog and just steps from the tourist centre. The place is small as museums go and we expected to spend just a few minutes scanning the exhibits but the admission charge was modest and we soon became fascinated as the volunteer staff began to describe how the harbour was formed almost by accident and how the village the became a prosperous shipbuilding community and important transshipment port for the huge amount of slate quarried in the nearby foothills.

There are wonderful old photos of the historic waterfront and the beautiful "Western Ocean Yachts", the small fast schooners for which Porthmadog is famous. Again we expected to spend just a minute to check out a video about the shipbuilding era but ended up watching the entire film.

An enjoyable and informative place to spend an hour or so.

Staying in Porthmadog harbour for a week, we called into the maritime museum. What an interesting visit. Just £2 entry fee and one of the gents behind the desk, Eric, gave us a great insight into the history of Porthmadog and it's beginnings. Knowledgeable guy. Then he left us to browse the rest of the museum. Loved every minute.
