THE WAITOMO GLOWWORM CAVES World renowned and a magnet for both local and overseas visitors, the Waitomo Glowworm Caves occupy a high placing in the New Zealand vacation wish-list. The glow worm, Arachnocampa luminosa, is unique to New Zealand. Thousands of these tiny creatures radiate their unmistakable luminescent light as our expert guides provide informative commentary on the Caves' historical and geological significance. Waitomo Glowworm Caves are a must see for any traveller. Enjoy the world famous boat ride under thousands of magical glowworms and become a part of over 120 years of cultural and natural history. THE BOAT RIDE Marvel at Mother Nature's light display as you glide silently through the starry wonderland of the Glowworm Grotto. Meander underground along the Waitomo River and gaze in silence at the myriad of glow worm lights that make up the Glowworm Grotto. As you enter this galaxy of tiny living lights, you'll immediately experience a serene ambience and be fascinated and intrigued by tiny glowworms that light your way. RUAKURI CAVE Ruakuri Cave offers a captivating blend of Waitomo's most compelling subterranean experiences. Journey down through the spectacular spiral entrance, and marvel at the softly folding shawl-like limestone formations and crystal tapestries. Hear the distant thunder of the subterranean waterfalls and get up close to the glowworms. ARUANUI CAVE Aranui Cave is a magical, mystical place that is steeped in Maori myth and legend. Just inside the entrance is a colony of native New Zealand cave wetas and further into the cave is the most beautiful collection of stalactites, stalagmites, flowstones and decorative formations.

I went once in the 1980's before all teh tourist hype. Now even though I live 30 mins down the road none of my family has visited due to the cost. Not sure why locals do not get a discounted rate considering we would take international visitors there. I have never taken anyone through as we cannot afford such a... More

We only took the one underground tour in one cave. There are plenty of different variations and caves you can do so it worth doing some research before going. The guide was knowledgeable and helpful however trying to get people to sing in the cavern is pushing it a bit far. The main event is obviously the glowworms - mesmerising... More

Our group of 18 people of 8 adults and 10 children (age 5 to 12) visited the caves in December 2016. Even the children were so mesmerised that they stayed completely quiet the whole time on the boat. Must do in North Island.

I had no idea what to expect of a glowworm cave, I was half expecting to be underwhelmed - so I'm glad to say that this went down in a book of magical moments for me. The tour is less than an hour, and you learn a lot of the local culture, how the caves were discovered and maintained, and... More

It's definitely worth it to visit Waitomo Caves. Our entire group was left speechless after our experience, and it's not as if you can do this anywhere in the world! It's a unique experience that I would definitely recommend.

Great to see the glow worms, however the time spend in the caves is very short compared to the cave and talk beforehand! Our guide was great however we had to walk around the cave and listen to the blurb for a long time before actually going on the boat! We came to see the glowworms not really the rest!... More

Definitely not as bright as I'd expected. Also the tour was quite brief (45 mins). The Raukuri Caves are a better alternative!

The caves are quite a drive from Auckland and if you opt for the basic tour only it lasts 45 minutes only. Yet, it left us spell bound. The whole experience is quite memorable and the guide was very interesting and entertaining. The facilities are well kept and caters very well for tourists. Parking can be a bit of an... More

I purchased a reservation to tour all 3 caves (Waitomo Glow worm cave, Ruakuri cave and the Aranui cave) on waitomo.com with the Triple Cave Tour package deal. Saw all 3 caves and some time to have lunch and shop at the gift store between 10am when I arrived by bus from Rotorua until my 4pm bus back to Auckland.... More
