THE WAITOMO GLOWWORM CAVES World renowned and a magnet for both local and overseas visitors, the Waitomo Glowworm Caves occupy a high placing in the New Zealand vacation wish-list. The glow worm, Arachnocampa luminosa, is unique to New Zealand. Thousands of these tiny creatures radiate their unmistakable luminescent light as our expert guides provide informative commentary on the Caves' historical and geological significance. Waitomo Glowworm Caves are a must see for any traveller. Enjoy the world famous boat ride under thousands of magical glowworms and become a part of over 120 years of cultural and natural history. THE BOAT RIDE Marvel at Mother Nature's light display as you glide silently through the starry wonderland of the Glowworm Grotto. Meander underground along the Waitomo River and gaze in silence at the myriad of glow worm lights that make up the Glowworm Grotto. As you enter this galaxy of tiny living lights, you'll immediately experience a serene ambience and be fascinated and intrigued by tiny glowworms that light your way. RUAKURI CAVE Ruakuri Cave offers a captivating blend of Waitomo's most compelling subterranean experiences. Journey down through the spectacular spiral entrance, and marvel at the softly folding shawl-like limestone formations and crystal tapestries. Hear the distant thunder of the subterranean waterfalls and get up close to the glowworms. ARUANUI CAVE Aranui Cave is a magical, mystical place that is steeped in Maori myth and legend. Just inside the entrance is a colony of native New Zealand cave wetas and further into the cave is the most beautiful collection of stalactites, stalagmites, flowstones and decorative formations.

We did a tour of the caves and the a glow worm viewing. To our surprise the tour of Ruakuri caves was so much better than the Glow worm boat trip. Our guide was informative and casual. We were given time to enjoy the caves and take it all in. The boat trip of the glow worms was a tad... More

I would definitely suggest planning more than one attraction to visit when you come out this far from the city - Hobbiton, Rotorua, etc. The caves are on Maori land, and the Maori lead the tours. Very knowledgeable about the history of the cave, they are also very proud of it and their heritage associated with it. Be warned -... More

I really love going in the cave in the wetsuits and seeing the glow worm. A very unique experience for sure. I can and have bungee jumped in many locations but only here in Waitomo have a seen the glow worms and gone "rafting" in the dark. Cant wait to go back Can be quite cold when getting out of... More

Great guides, great location, something different. Did this tour in combination with another, much cheaper that way. My 6 year old coped well with the tours and the large tour group and loved the gloworms at the end of the tour. Would recommend to anyone interested in caves, is a popular tour so could try booking ahead for your preferred... More

Something completely different from any other experience I ever had. Making your ways through the caves was thrilling, and the glow worms at the end make it a spectacuar experience. The guide was amazing: he helped us on the more tricky parts of the caves, gave a lot of information, took pictures and even sang a song at the end.... More

I loved this tour! I loved the fact the area was kept and run by the Māori people. The tour was nice, quite informative (I have already toured caves) and not rushed. Some people complain a lot about the time, but they don't understand that staying there for any longer would disrupt the environment to a greater extent than now.... More

We did the 'black-labyrinth' tour which was exciting but a bit scary at the same time! This involved caving whilst looking at the glow worms. As I do not like small spaces, I did feel a little bit anxious at the beginning but half way through the caves were more spacious. The guides there were very friendly and reassured the... More

A not-to-be-missed experience if you visit the North Island of New Zealand. As you float through the cave in a boat, enjoy what looks like a night sky. No photography allowed. Any flashes from cameras would be distracting for you and cause the glowing larvae to stop glowing. Enjoy the experience in silence.
