THE WAITOMO GLOWWORM CAVES World renowned and a magnet for both local and overseas visitors, the Waitomo Glowworm Caves occupy a high placing in the New Zealand vacation wish-list. The glow worm, Arachnocampa luminosa, is unique to New Zealand. Thousands of these tiny creatures radiate their unmistakable luminescent light as our expert guides provide informative commentary on the Caves' historical and geological significance. Waitomo Glowworm Caves are a must see for any traveller. Enjoy the world famous boat ride under thousands of magical glowworms and become a part of over 120 years of cultural and natural history. THE BOAT RIDE Marvel at Mother Nature's light display as you glide silently through the starry wonderland of the Glowworm Grotto. Meander underground along the Waitomo River and gaze in silence at the myriad of glow worm lights that make up the Glowworm Grotto. As you enter this galaxy of tiny living lights, you'll immediately experience a serene ambience and be fascinated and intrigued by tiny glowworms that light your way. RUAKURI CAVE Ruakuri Cave offers a captivating blend of Waitomo's most compelling subterranean experiences. Journey down through the spectacular spiral entrance, and marvel at the softly folding shawl-like limestone formations and crystal tapestries. Hear the distant thunder of the subterranean waterfalls and get up close to the glowworms. ARUANUI CAVE Aranui Cave is a magical, mystical place that is steeped in Maori myth and legend. Just inside the entrance is a colony of native New Zealand cave wetas and further into the cave is the most beautiful collection of stalactites, stalagmites, flowstones and decorative formations.

It is a little bit surreal to float along the river on a boat below the twinkling blue lights - in a cave. It is fairly magically too. The tour takes you through the caves and the guide will give you some info on how the formations came about etc. Then they will head you down further to take a... More

Was SO excited for this tour. Other than Hobbiton, main reason for visiting NZ. Perhaps expectations were too high because things sort of fell short when we had a very inexperienced guide that sort of stumbled through the tour and there was a baby screaming bloody murder the entire time. I think this is normally a really awesome thing to... More

We visited the cave without a reservations and were very lucky to get on a tour. The first part of the tour goes through several large caverns that have stalactites and stalacmites. The last part is exciting as you exit the cave on a boat, while viewing hundreds of glow worms.

The tour only took about 45 minutes, we only did the one cave. No pictures allowed of the glow worms which is fine, but you can take pictures at the end of the tour. The tour starts out on foot then in a boat at the end. The guide very informative and helpful.

we enjoyed this tour of spider-like insects which glow when needing to feed (in larva stage of life). our guide, a lineal descendant of Maori who introduced early settlers to this cave was knowledgeable and an aware guide...separated the group into those with children and those without and also after advancing the group to next location would backtrack so she... A really spectacular tour. Only a small group and ample time to just soak up the marvellous spectacle of what looked like a river of glow worms

We booked with Blackwater Tours and did all three caves - totally worth the time and money to do all. Absolutely amazing!

This family-owned attraction is definitely worth a visit when in New Zealand. Our group was late getting to the caves due to a broken down bus and the owners were extremely accommodating to make sure our group was able to do our tour. The guides were very informative and their system for guiding the boats through the dark caves was... More

The glowworm Cave was an excellent adventure, the guide was very informative and the glowworms put on a good show. There are also other caves that had their own distinctive features that were very worthwhile seeing. I would recommend that the purchase of the 3 cave package is a good deal. The caves are not that far apart, an easy... More
