Very informative and friendly guide took us into the depths of this cave to see glow worms, amazing rock formations and stalactites/stalagmites. Very accessible for all ages/fitness levels plus you're allowed to take photos unlike other caves in the area

We chose to do the walking tour of Ruakuri Cave. It is informative and our guide was well versed in the creation and discovery of the cave system and a font of knowledge on glowworms. A considerable amount of money has been spent to ensure accessibility for all which is good. But I felt it took away from the spectacular... More

We did this one before the glow worm cave. This was looooong and booooring. Our guide was not really up to pulling in a crowd. Long stories about nothing, I really do think no one was listening. Tried to tell jokes and would wait for a laugh. I am sorry but I would not do this cave again. I just... More

We did all three caves but split them so we did not do them all on the same day. Ruakuri cave was the coldest of the three but still worth visiting. We got to see a gloworm up close and the cave wetas. There were beautiful curtains in this cave and great photo opportunities. Well worth visiting if you have... More

Thanks for the review, and yes it can be a bit cold for the aussies. Current temp is 14.8°C, and that is fairly constant year round. To clarify - close up of glowworms in Ruakuri Cave, wetas are in Aranui Cave. Logan More

If you've got an hour or so to kill this is a nice thing to do but otherwise I wouldn't make it a must-do. While our tour guide was fantastic all of the interesting facts you learn you can also learn in the Waitomo Glowworm Cave tour so it's a lot of the same thing if you're thinking about doing... More

Thanks for an honest response A C. Certain info will double up with the other caves as they are, well, also caves! We hope that each individual cave also has its own story to tell. Remember the real attraction with Ruakuri Cave is that it has a bit of everything, is the most accessible, and allows photography. Logan More

Visited the main cave first, as one should and enjoyed that. This cave though was much better for the rock formations, much more like caving, and was colder and damper, and just amazing. Longer visit also - approaching two hours, and the arrangements for getting from the base site work well. The engineering of the access and the walkways is... More

That's more like it! Thanks Sam, Henry, both of you. We hope the engineering would be remain part of the story long after the completion of the project. Ruakuri is certainly more of an adventure than the other walking tours, which is why they're are great to add as a combo package. Logan More

Amazing! Great place to safely check out stunning caves, this one has had a small amount of modification to make it suitable for wheelchair access. Nothing intense about the journey through, a couple of slightly lower parts but spacious, well lit so suits those concerned about smaller spaces. Wonderful examples of cave features, great guides and everyone remained interested throughout... More

My partner and I really enjoyed our tour of Ruakuri cave. Our tour guide was young, fun and knowledgable and there were only 13 other people on our tour, which was great (only ever a maximum of 18, to manage high tourist volumes). We saw a great variety of stalactites, stalagmites, columns and curtains (all different and beautiful kinds of... More

Visited Ruakuri Cave after Waitomo Glowworm Cave as part of a LoTR package. My partner and I drove to Ruakuri, and were told to wait at the entrance. Said entrance is a rather nondescript rock protrusion with no clear signages. The tour did not start punctually, and we were left wondering whether we were late or at the wrong place.... More

Thanks for the review thelonelygnome, and apologies for any misunderstandings. As the longest walking tour in a cave, yes you do need to be prepared for walking - 1.6km (1 mi) to be precise. It is a fully wheel chair accessible walkway with handrails along the way so still the most accessible glowworm cave in the world. While Ruakuri boasts... More

Entrance is walking down a huge manmade pit path. The most delicate rock formations are protected by a intrusion alarm system and a warning of a hefty fine. Several amazing rock formations to see.

Thanks, but is that all you saw? Some of the most accessible glowworms on the planet and the chance to photograph them? Ruakuri is the most dynamic of all the walking tours with great variety and mystery. Excellent combo with WGC. Logan More
