Taupo is the town most people will be coming from and most hotels do a shuttle . Mine left around 7am

you do not have to have guides ... but if you don't then you need to either organize for someone to pick you up at the other end or park your vehicle, walk to the lakes (almost half way) and then turn round and head back.
