About
Standing in front of the municipal theatre, the equestrian statue of Field Marshal Douglas Haig (Commandant-in-Chief of theBritish Army during the Great War) is one of the few reminders of the pivotal role played by the peaceful town of Montreuil during the Great War. This statue was made in 1931 by Paul Landowski, the french sculptor of Christ the Redeemer in Rio de Janeiro.

Impressive statue and lovely square.
Sep 2019
The square is lovely, and interesting. Try and eat or have a drink or a coffee at Le Vauban bistro in the corner of the square. A lovely place which i have reviewed in more detail elsewhere.

Didn’t know....
Aug 2018 • Couples
that the statue was by the same artist as the Christ the Redeemer in Rio. We saw that in January this year. We have a house in Montreuil and so have driven/walked past Earl Haig numerous times, and attended ceremonies there. It adds to the interest to know about the Rio connection.

About all that remains
May 2018 • Solo
About all that remains of WW1.
Haigs HQ 3 miles south at Chateau Beaurepaire
is private property.
No entry.
The statue faces the market square.
Theres some cosy benches underneath with plenty of room.
Seems to serve as a pick up point!
The Theatre/Cinema is just behind.
Montreuil is the first 'French 'town outside Calais.
It has the feel of a Med hill top town, little market, hot ,cobbled,
very quiet like high noon.
old fading cinzano ads,
narrow alleys,
the gigantic old style hermitage hotel with old style service.
Theres a beautiful cherub fountain surrounded by tulips in the north part.
The stone is wet.
Ive only ever seen such a fountain in Christchurch Gardens in Oxford!
Obviously a continental style copy.
And all this for a tiny hill top village.
Man the drive here was about 1.5 hours.
I got bored after 2 hours though.

Well, It's a Statue!
Apr 2018 • Family
A nice enough statue, but to my mind there are enough statues of generals and leaders and we could do with more memorials or statues of those who actually fought and died for our freedom. On the other hand the inscription does state that it commemorates long lasting friendship and unity between France and Britain, which is surely a good thing!

Wonderful Statue
Apr 2018 • Couples
After just arriving in Montreuil sur Mer we parked the car in the large square and went to sit on a nearby seat. It was only after sitting down that we became aware of the rider on a horse in front of us and on investigation found it was a tribute to Field Marshal Douglas Haig. Interesting that both the French Tricolour and the Union Jack were flying either side of the statue

Unusual statue
Mar 2018 • Couples
This is unusual, because it is a replica of the original, the first having been taken during world war 2. It is a splendid statue - particularly fine of the horse!

Hello Haig
Feb 2018 • Family
A lifesize statue of Haig on a horse. Dominates the area where it's located. Very intricate in design and makes links to the role he played in WW1.

Haig's Command
Sep 2017 • Solo
As Commander of British Forces on the Western Front during the Great War, Haig established his Headquarters in the town and this mounted life size statue is a tribute to those facts. Facing the market square from across a small fountain/water feature this well maintained statue is a credit to the town for keeping it in such good condition with not a sign of ill informed graffiti. It's unfortunate the lettering on the base of the plinth is not very well picked out and so difficult to read.
