We had visited Montalcino twice and enjoyed the sweeping views from the walls of the old Fortezza built in the 14th century. The mighty fortress proudly protected the hill town of Montalcino at various times and is in remarkable condition now.

We combined a walk around the fort walls with a wine tasting lunch in the enoteca. The fort was great fun and we enjoyed beautiful views of montalcino and the surrounding countryside. Best bit is it’s only €4 each!

This castle is pleasant and relaxing. It's free to enter and ground level and there is a pleasant wine bar inside, with very knowledgeable staff. There is a charge to go up on to the ramparts, but the views make it worthwhile.
