Reservations are required for winery tours and tastings. Please contact us via email or the phone number above. The Etruscan celebration of life--beauty, food, and wine--is alive today on the Mate family's boutique wine estate. Twenty years ago, Ferenc and Candace Mate, author and painter, fell in love with an abandoned 13th century friary--its romantic tower, courtyard, and two private hills. Within its 28 hectares of Mediterranean woods were fragrant fields of wild herbs. They planted vineyards on Etruscan-built terraces and in seven fields of varying altitudes, expositions and subsoils. For each site, they carefully chose a grape varietal, rootstock, and clones. In marl, mineral-rich shale and tufaceous soil--all abundant in calcareous fossils of a primordial ocean bottom--vines planted to a high density, forced their roots deep through varied layers, enhancing the grapes' flavors and perfumes. The Mate's hand-made wines, from organically grown, carefully selected grapes, are internationally acclaimed.

- Go298074826831 contributionThank you for an incredible experience Maté!We spent 2 full days touring wineries in Tuscany and Maté stood out as one of the very best! Jessica was incredibly knowledgeable and welcoming. The area is one of the most beautiful regions in Italy and the Máté wines are extremely high quality. Owned by an Artist and an Author, the Máté winery is stunning and unique in that the winery is their home and their home is the winery. 10/10 would recommend!Visited March 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 3 April 2024
- Jma208New York City, New York12 contributionsA “Must Do” visit when in Montalcino. We had not been to Italy for several years due to Covid. Some friends asked us to join them on a trip in Oct, 2023 to Cortona. We recommended a day trip to Montalcino and a visit to the Mate winery. We coordinated with Jessica and are glad we made the trip. We have been there many times over the years and love all their wines and feel we have gotten to know the owners, Ferenc and Candice, as well as their hostess, Jessica. It is always a pleasant wine tasting because the owners and Jessica are so personable and the wine so tasty. This is one of the few wineries in the Montalcino area that if you purchase a case, they will ship to the US free. All 3 couples each bought a case and had the cases shipped to the US. Just recently one of the couples told me that after the case arrived that they had the wine at a dinner with other friends who like wine and the other couple were excited about the wine being served. It is my personal opinion that it is one of the best wineries it the Montalcino area and reserve their Brunello and Syrah for special occasions. We can highly recommend a visit to this winery and their wines. Both the visit and the wines will be memorable.Visited October 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 4 April 2024
- Angela S1 contributionA must visit in the Val d'OrciaWe are fortunate enough to have a home in the Val d'Orcia and every time we visit our Italian home we seek out "neighborhood" vineyards/wineries. We truly enjoyed our tour and tasting at Mate and it was a great personal experience and the wines were exceptional. It was fun to hear the story of the owners as expats to seek out their slice of La Dolce Vita and find their Italian journey. (We even bought and read their books about it.) We encourage anyone if they are in the region to seek out Mate and their amazing wines.Visited October 2023Travelled with familyWritten 9 April 2024
- Aeshna R1 contributionMáté Winery is a magical place! We were in Tuscany for a friend’s dreamlike wedding, and a visit to Máté winery increased the romance and magic of the week tenfold! My husband’s cousin had visited several years ago and insisted we arrange our schedule to include a trip there, despite not being huge wine drinkers. (We also live close to Napa Valley, so have wine tasted quite a bit.) I’m so glad we did! Máté is a passion project, and passion exudes from every facet—the wine is painstakingly crafted, the grounds are stunning, and Jessica was very knowledgeable and excited to share Máté’s story. We loved the Brunellos and ended up getting a case so we could share the elegant wines with our family and friends. We had a private tour with a wine and cheese tasting, then were generously allowed to roam the beautiful grounds on our own. It was such a special and unique experience—it felt very authentic and intimate, like we were welcomed as friends instead of strangers. Highly recommend visiting if you are in Tuscany!Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 10 April 2024
- 1HappyTravellerrCharleston, South Carolina55 contributionsVeltha Tour - Outstanding! The Veltha Tour with a barrel tasting and a 1 1/2 hour visit was nothing short of outstanding. Jessica gave my wife and me a tour that we will not soon forget. Jessica provided us with a great view of the history of the winery and the Máté family. She answered every question we had about their outstanding wines. Although we had visited Mate five plus years earlier for a tasting, this visit was far more memorable. We thank Jessica for all of her efforts.Visited April 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 4 May 2024

- janwacWoodinville, Washington14 contributionsA fantastic winery visit!!We had read Ferenc's books on moving to Tuscany and starting a winery (which we recommend). So when we had the opportunity to visit the area, we made sure to schedule a tasting at Mate. We were not disappointed! The grounds are amazing - complete with a gorgeous winery cat! And Jessica took the eight of us on a wonderful tour, complete with a knowledgeable history of the winery and conveyed the passion with which the wine is made. Oh - and we sampled some absolutely delicious wines! If you have not enjoyed Mate wines- they are fantastic. Thank you Jessica and Candace for your time during our visit. You made it a memorable time!Visited September 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 23 September 2024
- Shannon M1 contributionMate for the win!!!My husband and I booked a tour and tasting at this stunning vineyard. The surroundings and grounds of which this quaint winery are located are nothing short of spectacular. As a matter of fact, I would easily say there is a sense of magic in that particular area. Jessica was kind, informative and so down to earth. You can feel the passion she has for this winery and the family that owns it. They seem to be a rather well oiled team. The wine… spectacular. We had three Brunello’s and one Merlot. All unique and showcasing such different components. What a cool experience!! We did several wine tastings both in Piemonte and Tuscany. By far our favorite was Máté. Although small by comparison to many in the area they have the biggest heart and soul around.Visited October 2024Travelled with familyWritten 25 October 2024

Máté Winery is one of Montalcino's best kept secrets. Tucked within the rolling hills of cypress trees and vineyards, Máté is like a fairytale. It is a stunning property with a beautiful tasting room (complete with a cat sleeping in a stone niche), but best of all is the personalized experience you get. Jessica (our host) was very friendly, informative, and made us feel right at home. This tour and tasting felt different from all the others, because it felt like family sitting in a home, eating food and drinking delicious wine, instead of feeling like visitors being serviced. Not to mention, the wine was so good we bought a whole case (and a couple magnums). Would highly recommend!!

We loved our visit to Mate! We visited while on a trip with another couple. The grounds were absolutely beautiful and picturesque - rolling hills of vineyards, beautiful stone buildings with a private tasting room, and pretty gardens and flowers. We booked a private Veltha tour with Jessica, and it was such a special experience. We learned so much, and also got the rare chance to see the grapes being pressed in the fall, and got to try the wine directly out of the press, along with comparison wines from the barrel, followed by a private tasting of their wines in our own room for the 4 of us. We loved their wines and shipped some home. Delicious! This was such a great experience, and I highly recommend you visit if you have the chance!

We visited Mate on the way back from a large winery tour and it did not disappoint. The very intimate tasting with Jessica as she explained the history of the winery was a great experience. The wines from the Brunello to the Merlot were exceptional… we ordered a case.

The reviews for this winery are very good, but I wouldn’t recommend it. Although the place is very beautiful and the wine is good, they charge 50 euros for a so called “tour” + wine tasting which is literally a 15-20 minutes storytelling in the wine cellar and then they take you into a small room to taste 4 different wines. And that’s it.

My husband and a couple we travelled to Italy with booked a tasting at Mate winery. We enjoyed our visit here so much. It is such a beautiful location. Our host Jessica guided us thru the delicious tasting. So many good wines but the 2017 Brunello was our favourite. Jessica is extremely knowledgeable and answered all our questions. This winery really is devoted to creating wines in a sustainable eco friendly way. And we loved that. She also gave us a few suggestions of towns to visit around Montalcino and they were excellent spots. Overall just a wonderful time. Thank you Jessica and Mate wines.

My wife, a friend and I visited Mate' after reading Ferenc's books and based on recommendations from family. We had a full tour. We shoed up early but Jessica and the team graciously set things up in a hurry. It was fantastic. Not only is the wine outstanding but we learned a lot about the practice and challenges of producing truly organic superior wines. The gardens and vineyards and villa are spectacular!

We had a great time visiting the Máté winery. Jessica was a wonderful and knowledgeable host. We enjoyed getting to learn a little more about the process of making wine and of course tasting the different types. The location is stunningly beautiful. We had our kids ages 7, 11 and 12 with us as well. Jessica was great with them and they learned a little about how wine is made and enjoyed the food we had with the tasting. They also had fun trying to feed the fish afterwards. What a dream location and delicious wine! We enjoyed hearing the origin story of the vineyard and purchased the owners book upon returning home to Canada.

Given the number of excellent reviews for this winery, my wife and I were very disappointed with the wine tour. In fact, the tour was one of the worst we have experienced, especially considering the tasting / tour cost of €30 per person (which is double the price were heard from another local winery). Having not read the owner's books or tried his wines, we had no romantic affiliation with the winery. For us it was another winery we wanted to try; unfortunately, it just did not measure up. The winery is very small, and there is really nothing of note to see or experience.
Our host, Jessica, is a nice, pleasant young lady.
I suggest you pass on this winery and try another winery.

We read the books by Ferenc Ma’te’ and wanted to experience the vineyards and winery firsthand. Jessica was an excellent host and the visit was better than we imagined. She personalized our experience and her knowledge of wine making and tasting enhanced the overall beauty of this special place. Highly recommend.

This was a return trip to Mate… for good reason… it is amazing! This trip included my adult children and 12 year old granddaughter.
The tour was chock full of fun facts and serious, educational information about the history of the property, the process this premier vineyard follows, and the resulting vintages. Jessica brings the work at the vineyard to life. It was so interesting to learn the adjustments they would be making based on the weather this year and how each year is different, leading to the resulting vintages.
The tasting was well organized and built on the information from the tour. We were able to try a great selection of the vintages they have produced. Jessica helped us understand the window where each wine should be enjoyed… from immediately to those we will save for several years. On a past visit it was fun to by a few bottles to enjoy during the trip. This visit we also shipped some home to enjoy for years to come.
After the tasting we strolled the gorgeous gardens surrounding the lovely Mate home. The setting and view are amazing. We enjoyed a fun brief visit with Candace, the owner.

Hi - I wish I could say that your could take a bus here, but we're 10 km outside Montalcino, so a rental car is really what you need. I think you can rent a car in Buonconvento - our nearest train station, and a 1.2 hour drive to our place. Feel free to write me for more information. Looking forward to your visit, Candace Máté

Dear Ferenc and Candace,
I have long been a fan of you both for all of your exploits starting back in the 80s with "Best Boats" and through the Tuscany books.
We are planning a trip to Tuscany from March 10-15, 2017. If you are home during that time it would be an honor to meet you both and of course experience first hand your craft in wine making.
Sincerely, George Vosburgh
