About
At the time of Pliny, during the Roman Empire, Peschiera was called Arilica and had already a considerable importance. Later, in the next centuries, it was fortified by the Scaligeri, by Venice, Austria and Italy. The walls were designed by famous architects: a good part of it is the work of Sanmicheli. Today you can find shops, bars, restaurants and ice cream parlours inside the pentagon shaped fortress where the city centre is located. Along the lakeside there are many facilities for water sports like; sailing, motor boat rentals, sup and more. Peschiera del Garda has around forty cozy hotels and a dozen of the biggest and best equipped campsites of the lake. In the surrounding area there are both natural parks as amusement parks among the best known in Europe. Thanks to the lake we have a fertile countryside and a very fine wine area, which in the past attracted kings, merchants and cardinals, our first ‘tourists’!

Interesting city walls/fortress with nice downtown, many small shops and restaurants, all but not quite cheap. The canals are beautiful around the city wall/fortress wall and you can also walk on the walls and get a panoramic view. We were there for the second time after last year, especially in not so great weather a destination or stop on the way to e.g. Salo.

The historic core is surrounded by the Venetian walls with the five bastions (the so-called Fortress, a UNESCO heritage site since 2017), in turn surrounded by moats flooded by the waters of the Mincio, which generates from Lake Garda right here. The Mezzo canal divides the fortified city into two sectors, connected by two bridges: the Voltoni bridge to the east and the Viale Cordigero bridge to the west. The walled city can only be accessed via two gates: Porta Verona and Porta Brescia. Of the Venetian period, essentially only the walls remain of significance (including the bastions and gates; the Voltoni bridge is in fact an integral part of the walls), while within the historic center the military buildings prevail, built in particular during the reinforcements of the time Habsburg, around the middle of the 19th century. The bastions are all beautiful and scenic, as are the various bridges, thanks also to the flowers that embellish them; within the historic center there are, in my opinion, no buildings or monuments of particular beauty or high artistic value, but overall the center is very, very pleasant: lively, with many bars, lots of greenery and lots of water and various characteristic and panoramic views.

Spectacular town on Lake Garda!
On weekends it is always very crowded in the centre, but in the secondary streets you can find a little more peace. The town directly overlooks the lake offering several very beautiful and romantic panoramic points. The village is full of ice cream parlors and bars and restaurants that allow you to taste something along the lake.
For the more sporty, it offers a cycle path that goes from Peschiera to Mantua passing through some beautiful villages (for example Borghetto).

The fortress of Peschiera del Garda is an imposing defensive work that for centuries protected the town. Inside the fortress, over the years, numerous military buildings were built, enclosed by powerful brick walls. Along the boundary were also opened two gates, Porta Verona and Porta Brescia, in the direction of the roads leading to the two important cities.

Its history as a military stronghold dates back to the 6th century, although only in the mid-16th century did Venice establish a fortress there and much later, under the Austrians, it became a cornerstone of the Quadrilateral, the system of bulwarks guarding the Adige valley. The fortress of Peschiera del Garda is a pentagonal military building along the banks of the Mincio; the historic center is enclosed inside. For the Christmas holidays we visit the tried and tested "Underwater Nativity Scene" which can be admired from the balustrade of Ponte San Giovanni

A beautiful surprise. It is worth staying for at least a week to explore the surroundings of Lake Garda and, who knows, the nearby villages and towns of Verona, Trento, Mantua, Sirmione and Rivoli. And, of course, the Venetian legacy...

A fascinating and buzzing small town, set amongst those Austrian fortifications. One of those places where you keep discovering something new every day. A trip around the walls in a small boat (10 euro) is well worth it, giving you the true scale of those mighty walls. And although hectic along the main frontage, there are quieter spots if you seek them out.
Great place!

We came during a hot summer day to visit this large fortress and more in Peschiera del Garda.

Impressive walls and a stunning lighting made our stay very enjoyable.

Cozy happening in Peschiera del Garda. Unfortunately it was very hot around 11-21 Aug 37 degrees feeling temperature 40-45 degrees. We had brought the bikes but not touched them, too hot. We stayed 10 min drive from Peschiera in Hotel Nuova Barcaccia and thought to hop back and forth by bike, not to do we found.

A beautiful town closed between ramparts and waterway in perfect condition.

The stretch of the Middle Canal between the renovated Officers Pavilion and beautiful houses is breathtaking.

Of course, like many places on Lake Garda, it suffers a crazy tourist crowd in spring and summer and this is a bit of a problem (in addition to the heat, which on Lake Garda is worse than Tunis!).

Better go out of season.
