Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

A real insight into part of Rochester’s rich history - the lovely lady on the door went to great trouble to explain the history of this intriguing building. I loved the courtyard garden and the Dickens connection. A small and delightful oasis.

This house was truly interesting. The guide told us about the founding patron and some of the buildings history but the info boards tell a much deeper story. Our friends live just outside Rochester and despite walking past the building many times over many years had never previously been inside. As visitors to the area we followed them in and for the next 45 minutes were amazed at the generosity of the patron and how many years the facity was operational. A gem with wonderful hosts.

The.Six Poor Travelllers House is a first class place to visit in Rochester High Street. Entry is free and 15 minutes is plenty of time to see this beautiful house and garden steeped in history which holds its own amongst the picture perfect Rochester High Street. The guide, Liz, provides a fascinating incite into Watts Charity and how it supports locals to this day.

On visiting Rochester, we came across this beautiful old building. It was absolutely fascinating with lots of history. If you are interested in Charles Dickens or any other history of this house, this is where you will find it. A sweet garden out the back also :-)

I have visited he house before a couple of years ago and found it incredibly interesting. The Custodian Liz is extremely friendly and knowledgeable. I have always been especially fond of the beautiful walled garden. This time though, some beautiful new additions, a Stunning bronze bust of Richard Watts positioned centrally in the garden surrounded by a sea of blue and yellow flowers in support of Ukraine - what a beautiful sentiment! This House and it’s garden although 15th Century certainly deserve its place in 2022 - well worth a visit.

Curator, Liz, is lovely, enthusiastic and a mind of information. From the outside, the building is plain but step inside and discover how the charity started by Richard Watts in the 16th century continues to benefit people in the 21st century. This is a gem not to be missed when visiting the area and whilst free to visit, donations are welcome. Glad we spent over an hour learning about the poor unfortunate people who benefitted hundreds of years' ago and the walled garden at the rear was a joy to sit in; so peaceful.

The custodians at 6 PTH have surely captured the mood of the nation with its simple, but effective tribute, marking the passing of our beloved Queen Elizabeth II.

"We shall not look upon her like again!"

As the marmalade-loving character that is Paddington Bear said:

"Thank you Ma’am, for everything!"

There will be jam pennies and marmalade sandwiches for tea in her honour.

May she rest in peace.

God save the King!

Such an interesting place to learn about local history and realise what a wonderful person Richard Watts must have been to leave such a great legacy.
The couple that look after the house were lovely too and gave us lots of information about the house and the area. You could tell they were really committed in keeping the house and garden in great shape.

A true immersion into Dickensian times. Our host, Liz, custodian of this historical little gem, was incredibly welcoming.

The house is immortalised in Dickens' Christmas short story entitled The Seven Poor Travellers.

Rochester is a lively town with many attractions, but this small gem is one of the best.
Wonderfully preserved old building, VG displays on its history, knowledgable and helpful volunteers and a peaceful enclosed garden. Well worth an hour of your time
