A castle with a view - Christmas markets, summertime events, great place to visit. Rochester Castle stands on the east bank of the River Medway in Rochester, Kent, South East England. The 12th-century keep or stone tower, which is the castle's most prominent feature, is one of the best preserved in England or France

Having driven a long way to see the Christmas Market in Rochester we were so disappointed because the parking was virtually non existent. The organisers should take note, it's the worst dis-organised parking I have encountered for a long time. We gave up and went else where, not even a park and ride, so sorry don't bother. Waste of time.

To be honest, this castle was one of the factors that made us move to Rochester. It's well worth a visit, whether you're 8 or 80, but, be warned, this is an ancient monument so you'll need to be a little careful of your footing but it's nothing a decent pair of flat shoes or trainers won't handle. The approach... More

English heritage run the castle. There is a climb from Rochester High street to the castle keep. Steps take you to the entrance of the tower. More climbing once inside but once at the top the views are fantastic . The Medway river views take you the Medway bridge in the distance. Trains running along look like toys. Really worth... More

Overpriced and extremely overcrowded. Would definitely not recommend to anyone with young children. Couldn't get near any stalls due to the hoards of people, bought two burgers for £10 and fought our way back to the car. A huge disappointment

We visited the Christmas fair on Sunday and had a lovely day. The castle was the best place to hold this event. Very authentic and put us in the Christmas mood 🎄😊

There is no doubt that this was and is a formidable building, it must have struck fear into any attacker when they saw it. Nowadays as most us will travel there by car it is surprisingly well hidden, you don't see it until you are almost upon it. For those visiting by car there's plenty of parking around there's even... I live in Medway and thought I would give the Christmas market a go for the first time. Don't bother this is the worst Christmas market I've been to it's all general market tat the only difference is its way overpriced because it's a Christmas market. Theres just no Christmas atmosphere here. There are a lot of hot food stalls... More

I took my children here. Entry to the castle grounds is free, but there is a charge (just over £6 for an adult, £4 for children, and just over £16 for a family ticket) to go into the Keep. The Keep is mainly a ruin, but all external walls are intact and you can take the spiral staircase to the... More

This keep is fantastically intact given its age. Yes central internal floors are missing but you can still climb the stairs to the top and there are descriptions of each level and their purpose as you go up. Once at the top the view across the river and Rochester are great. Well worth it.
