The Falls of Shin is such a pleasing place to relax and watch salmon...

The Falls of Shin is such a pleasing place to relax and watch salmon leaping from the dynamic waterfall. The Falls of Shin are spectacular in their own right, but the sight of leaping salmon makes them even more special and something not to be missed. Falls of Shin is recognised as being one of the best places worldwide to watch leaping Atlantic Salmon. The fish can be seen anytime between May and November, with the late summer months making this almost guaranteed.

Following a fire which saw the former building burn to the ground, the Kyle of Sutherland Development Trust, on behalf of the community were successful with a Stage 1 BIG Lottery application and were invited to make a Stage 2 funding application. The design concept of the building, created by CH Architecture, is loosely based on the image of a fish and is made up of a head, body and tail. Each part forms a distinctive function.

We are proud to have a 4* rating on TripAdvisor and another 4* with the Visit Scotland Rating Scheme. Please feel free to leave your own visitor comments!

The centre will feature a 60 seat cosy café, a gift shop with local produce stocked, an exhibition and interpretation area, a children’s play area along with an events plaza. This will all fit into the surroundings of the on-site forest and of course the leaping salmon.

This is the best venue to see Atlantic salmon leaping the falls. There are viewing platforms above the river and you will experience the thrill of watching the fish make their way up the torrent of water created by the falls of shin. The best time to visit is autumn when large numbers of salmon are returning to the River... More

After reading about it in the Lonely Planet and after my B&B host recommended going to the Falls of Shin as well I kind of expected a bit more. The falls are ok, definitely something you can do if you're in the area but they are not a must-do.

As we were staying in the area we thought we should take a look. The falls are down a single track road with passing places. Parking is just across the road to the path down. It's part slope and part steps down, but I believe there is a slope only down as well. We didn't see any leaping salmon, others... More

Beautiful place. Great journey to it as well especially if you take road that goes over the Struie.Pity about the visitors centre but will be great when the new one is finished.

The Falls themselves are a sure bet for seeing leaping salmon and the surrounding woods have lovely way marked walks. The visitor centre is currently being rebuilt as a local community project and promises to be visually interesting. Good luck for the future!

Easy to find and not to many steps to get down but be carefull to check out when is the best time to watch the salmon. Been looking for a couple of years now and still no sign. I think they jump earlier than the articles say as the locals all reccomend earlier in the summer, not the autumn?

Spent a pleasant half an hour watching the Salmon leaping up the waterfall. Beware, the visitor centre is currently closed and is a huge construction site ! No toilets ! Nice kids playground and forest walks. Continue into Lairg if you need facilities.

We visited the Falls when the salmon were running, which is a great experience, but the water level was too low to be spectacular. One advantage of heavy rain and melting snow in Scotland is that the waterfalls and rivers are awe-inspiringly beautiful. There is a plus side to everything.

The falls of Shin are a waterfall on the river Shin in the northern highlands of Scotland near the villages of Bonar Bridge and Lairg of Shin managed as part of the Balnagown Estates. A company owned by former Harrods boss Mohamed Al-Fayed.
