About
The Falls of Shin are famous for being one of the best places in Scotland to view salmon in their natural habitat. The former Falls of Shin centre, nicknamed “Harrods of the North” was destroyed by fire in May 2013. This left a huge hole in the local economy and as a leading employer a vast number of jobs were lost overnight. Following this, local charity - Kyle of Sutherland Development Trust, raised project funding to rebuild the popular attraction. The Trust worked with the community, stakeholders, funders and the design team (CH Architecture) to develop the project. Falls of Shin was officially reopened in May 2017 with a day of celebrations for the local community. Since then we have welcomed visitors from around the world and recreated employment opportunities at the visitor centre. The site has a restaurant and gift shop (run by a private operator), playpark, mini golf, forest trails, and a viewing platform where people can watch the salmon leaping.

    Cracking spot
The Falls are really beautiful. I even got to see some salmon jumping up them as they headed to the spawning grounds further upstream. There is a place to park, and there used to be a visitor centre, but that has closed, which is a shame as it's a cracking spot. There are toilets and a playpark for the kids as well as overnight parking available for those touring the Highlands. Access to the falls is down a gentle slope to a wide viewing platfrom. It is wheelchair accessible as well, which is great.

    Worth a detour
We went late afternoon when the salmon were running. Sadly the visitor centre is currently closed and for sale if you have a spare £350k. Plenty of parking and some porta loos at the rear of the visitor centre. There is a play area for children and several woodland walks . A steep slope down to the viewing area which is quite small. We saw at least 20 salmon in about half an hour . If they are fishing on the river then the salmon are running. Worth a detour.

Sad that there's no longer facilities
Very scenic area and only a short but steep walk to the falls viewing platform. Best to go in June to see the salmon leap. The shop & cafe still sit derelict so no facilities apart from two portaloos.

    Scenic walk and lovely coffee
The falls are just lovely to watch unfortunately did not see any salmon. Had a nice walk in the woods followed by a lovely cup of coffee at the cafe which is run by a lovely couple who are very friendly. They have recently taken the cafe over and would like to wish them every success in there new venture.

Really well designed facilities. Lovely Falls
The sun was out and the falls were storming away but sadly no salmon were leaping. Never mind, I really enjoyed my visit and they have designed the cafe and rest area really well to fit in with the surroundings. Peaceful.

Gorgeous little shop with jumping salmon!
Lovely stop! We saw approx 5 salmons jumping in the space of about 45 mins. Very short 5 mins (walk to the falls from the carpark. (windy/slightly uneven for people with accessibility considerations.) Gorgeous coffee shop with indoor and outdoor seating. Very good friendly service. Perfect for an hour or so or even a picnic!

Lovely Day, Lovely Food, Lovely Staff
Fantastic day! The falls were beautiful and the short walks in the surrounding areas are well signposted. Parking was easily paid for in the restaurant and can be refunded if you eat there. Food was delicious and staff were lovely, especially the young girl, sorry we forgot to get your name!

As a family we have been regular visitors to the Falls of Shin for 20 years so imagine our disappointment on arriving to find we now have to pay an extortionate parking fee via a complicated phone service to enjoy a natural beauty spot that should be accessible for everyone. We then discover that even though the community run building was purpose built to allow public access to the toilets this is now deined unless you are a cafe customer. The park is now poorly cared for. The crazy golf has been ripped up. The kiosk was closed and the lovely mosaic at the Falls viewpoint is falling to pieces. This is a place of many happy family memories and it was incredibly disappointing to experience it like this.

We are local to Shin falls and had no idea until today ,but the center now has car parking charges ,so as far as we can tell you cant even park up for coffee without paying for parking,I believe the price for overnight stays has also drastically increased

So the waterfall itself is nice. It’s just opposite the car park and about the only positive thing about this place.

So the parking was a nightmare. You either have to download the app (not pay by phone/ringo etc that are used nationally!) or call a parking phone number. Due to poor internet signal we decided to ring the parking number. Firstly you have to create an account and then go on to pay for the parking. It then sends you a text for you to text back with your registration number. Surely that defeats the point of it making you register an account and registration number in the first place! So we finally got this sorted only to notice hours later some extra payments had been taken out on our credit card. We contacted the bank who suspected fraud and cancelled the card. They said it had likely occurred when we gave bank details over the phone to the parking app.

So after all of the parking stress we went to the cafe to use the toilet, only to be told that we couldn’t use them for free as we weren’t paying customers. Paying for parking by the way is not classed as a paying customer as apparently they are different businesses. We asked if there were other toilets but was told no.
What’s we did find strange after being told they were two different businesses was that the cafe staff then asked if we’d managed ok to pay for our parking and asked if we needed any help.
Sounds strange for two seperate businesses.
Anyway….So we were told we could use the toilet if we left a donation in their “toilet” fund on the bar. We had no cash (as many don’t since the pandemic). So we had to buy a packet of crisps for £1.50 just to be able to spend a penny (pardon the pun!).

The water fall wasn’t worth it for the lack of friendliness from the cafe staff and the carry on with the parking.

Well, what a palaver with the parking app. By the time I got it sorted, I had paid 3 times.
The public toilets were closed and those at the cafe were only for customers use. I think whoever is running this place is taking total advantage of its customers. There are plenty of other falls in this area. I would give this one a miss.

We really enjoyed the walk down to the falls and the falls themselves were beautiful. However our visit was marred because we had difficulty parking. This month parking charges have been introduced by a company called Phone and Pay. I tried 6 times using the app! Useless! So I finally phoned and set it all up. The staff at the restaurant on site said they had had a lot of complaints and if necessary they would have helped us out.

If you visit the lovely scenic Falls, treat yourself to an excellent coffee at the cafe or outdoor kiosk and seating area. I understand it's just been taken over a couple after being closed and they deserve the support, especially when the service is delivered with such a smile.
