About Maginot Line Tours - Tucker Tours
Maginot Line Tours / Tuckertours are sightseeing tours arranged with my visitors typically weeks or months in advance. My visitors come from all around the English speaking world (USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, UK). In general they come to Sedan,(France) specifically for my tour as part of their ‘European tour’. The tours last a complete day and are usually based on the German attack at Sedan in May 1940 and the French Maginot Line defences in the area. The tour includes a private underground visit of a Maginot Line ouvrage( Fort). We visit the battlefield that is the area around Sedan, in the conflicts of 1640 (leading to Sedan being annexed by France), the 1870 Franco-Prussian War (the battle of Sedan was militarily the defining battle in the Franco-Prussian War), WWI (the German attack through Sedan in 1914 and in 1918 the furthest point of advance reached by the US Army), and of course the 1940 Blitzkrieg attack at Sedan through the Ardennes, and the French Maginot Line defenses in the area). We see and visit sites of Historical (military) and Heritage interest. From the medieval castle at Sedan, the old town of Sedan, fortified churches, the Maginot Line and the beautiful Ardennes countryside. All of this in the area where these battles took place. Usually the tour is based on the events in 1940, however we take in elements from the previous battles (1870 and WWI) because it is all in the same area, and the preceding battles help explain in part what happened here in 1940. Occasionally I do day tours based only on the 1870 Franco-Prussian battle at Sedan. My visitors are usually interested in military history, quite frequently they are very knowledgeable on such matters. Occasionally I have groups of serving military in larger groups coming to see the area as part of their military training. Consequently I am amending the Trip Advisor categories for my listing to be as follows: Sightseeing Tours: Evidently this is the general description of what I do. Historical and Heritage Tours: The tours are based on the historical (military) events that took place here. Private Tours: The tours are by prior arrangement and are private. Battlefields: The tours take place over the area around Sedan that was a battlefield in 1870, WWI and WWII.

As soon as he stepped into the B&B where we were staying (Un Week End en Ardenne, recommended by Richard himself), we knew that the day couldn't go wrong despite the very grey and cold November weather. He just had the look on him! Richard brought us a full day of interesting facts and details about the Maginot Line, that decided on the success of the German invasion of Sedan, as well as the key position the area held in history from the defeat of Napoleon III in 1870 until the invasion of Nazi Germany in 1940. This experience is beyond anything any history book would tell you, and at the same time Richard delivers it in a hugely engaging and entertaining way. While he was explaining about the German invasion in the fields, it was still vague to grasp the whole picture but when he explained it later with coins on a map, everything fell into places and the battle scenes were revived in front of our eyes. He is a great storyteller! Thanks Richard for this wonderful experience !!!

Together with my son we took a 1 day tour with Richard. The tour mostly concentrates on the second world war Maginot line fortifications around Sedan. It includes a large variety of fortifications, from small block houses/bunkers to large forts. With some being in open fields and others inside deep forests. Richard makes the tour into a fascinating adventure. He knows an incredible about of details and can present them in an interesting and accessible way. It is like listening to a well written story. The 10 hour tour passed very quickly, we were never bored.

Well it was a pleasure to spend a day with you both, I think, my first Swiss visitors. Certainly the first time I've discussed UK jazz musicians form the 1960's and 70's on a tour - that's for sure. Thank you for the wonderful comment. Particularly pleased to hear that it was an adventure, that's marvellous. All the best. Cheers, Richard

My dad and I travelled to Sedan having booked a tour with Richard over two days. I would recommend two days as there is so much to see and take in. Richard is like an old chum; someone you’ve known for years and very well-read in the history throughout this part of France. So, if you arrive with assertions about this region especially in 1940, Richard enthusiastically presents some compelling facts that may leave you reflecting on actually how pivotal this region was during outbreak of WW2. Richard, you’re a star!

On a whim I booked a tour with Richard when I was looking around for places to see in Western Europe on my backpacking trip; and this last minute reservation easily turned out to be the highlight of my entire vacation. Going into the tour, I had a small amount of background knowledge about WW1 and WW2 from school and a few podcasts I've listened to; it was marvelous to see those stories laid out on the very land that they were fought on. Richard has an excellent way of showing the Maginot blockhouses and how the Germans burst through Sedan. The fortresses the French constructed are truly a sight to behold, and Richard will show you both the inner workings of the most complex ouvrage and the small blockhouses and trenches that few outside of this tour have ever seen before. As an American, it was especially illuminating to see just how many scars of war were left behind in Europe after the World Wars. In addition to the fortifications strewn about the countryside, there is so much evidence of destruction to include bullet holes on the sides of churches and the warped terrain from shelling. It is sobering to see and I highly recommend any American, especially if you are a service member like myself, to go on this tour for this reason alone. It is a very different perspective than an American can experience in our homeland. Richard has a deep passion on the subject of the Maginot Line, and it is quite infectious. I learned a lot and will continue to read more on the subject in the future. I will keep this experience close for a lifetime.

Wow! That is very kind of you to take the time to write such a lengthy comment. You really were full of enthusiasm and open to hearing what I had to say. I totally agree with you that there much evidence of the wars that have taken place in the Ardennes and Meuse Departments - from bullet holes on walls to the construction of fortified churches and blockhouses (by both the French and the Germans). A pleasure to have spent a couple of days with you too. All the best. Cheers, Richard

Although my wife is not so much interested in the war history as I am, we still had a great day with Richard. Not only his endless knowledge of the Maginot Line was imprwssive, but his personality and humor added to the fun we had. We had a one day tour, but we were 11 hours on the road, :) HIGHLY RECOMMENDED !!!
