About
Maginot Line Tours / Tuckertours are sightseeing tours arranged with my visitors typically weeks or months in advance. My visitors come from all around the English speaking world (USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, UK). In general they come to Sedan,(France) specifically for my tour as part of their ‘European tour’. The tours last a complete day and are usually based on the German attack at Sedan in May 1940 and the French Maginot Line defences in the area. The tour includes a private underground visit of a Maginot Line ouvrage( Fort). We visit the battlefield that is the area around Sedan, in the conflicts of 1640 (leading to Sedan being annexed by France), the 1870 Franco-Prussian War (the battle of Sedan was militarily the defining battle in the Franco-Prussian War), WWI (the German attack through Sedan in 1914 and in 1918 the furthest point of advance reached by the US Army), and of course the 1940 Blitzkrieg attack at Sedan through the Ardennes, and the French Maginot Line defenses in the area). We see and visit sites of Historical (military) and Heritage interest. From the medieval castle at Sedan, the old town of Sedan, fortified churches, the Maginot Line and the beautiful Ardennes countryside. All of this in the area where these battles took place. Usually the tour is based on the events in 1940, however we take in elements from the previous battles (1870 and WWI) because it is all in the same area, and the preceding battles help explain in part what happened here in 1940. Occasionally I do day tours based only on the 1870 Franco-Prussian battle at Sedan. My visitors are usually interested in military history, quite frequently they are very knowledgeable on such matters. Occasionally I have groups of serving military in larger groups coming to see the area as part of their military training. Consequently I am amending the Trip Advisor categories for my listing to be as follows: Sightseeing Tours: Evidently this is the general description of what I do. Historical and Heritage Tours: The tours are based on the historical (military) events that took place here. Private Tours: The tours are by prior arrangement and are private. Battlefields: The tours take place over the area around Sedan that was a battlefield in 1870, WWI and WWII.

On Friday 1 November we had the opportunity to be guided by Richard Tucker along the Maginot line at Sedan. As of the start of the tour Richard ascertained that it would be a day we’d remember.
The tour day was properly build up by first providing back ground information including detailed maps, he is able to present all information in a very engaging/entertaining manner while being respectful in relation to the events occurred at the Maginot Line. With his way of storytelling he was able to keep the attention of an 11 year old up to a 75 year old.
The tour ended with a private tour at L’ouvrage de la Ferté which really left a deep impression on us.
We definitely recommend to book the tour if you are interested in the Maginot line (at Sedan).

Thank you for this marvellous comment. I'm really pleased that the three of you had a great time. I was very impressed with your sons level of English, well done young man. Who was the 75 year old? I thought he was your brother, in his 40's. Also pleased that you enjoyed the private tour given by Roger - don't think you'll find a better guide than him. All the best. Cheers, Richard

This is an absolutely must-do tour if you are at all interested in the history of the area of the Maginot Line. There is so much to discover here and Richard is a master of presenting it all in an interesting and coherent way so that you can simultaneously take in the historic events and appreciate the absolute natural beauty in the area. I have read about and been interested in the WW2 events in the Ardennes for decades and Richard was still able to teach me new things.
My wife and I did a one-day tour that focused on 1940 in the area around Sedan. Richard also arranged a tour of the fort at La Ferté (two hours and has material for much more) for us, which was splendid. We were also able to see some sights from 1870. It feels as though there is history around every corner.
The area is gorgeous. We stayed in Sedan which feels like a small town and is thus not congested but has excellent accommodation and food. Only problem was availability of taxis but with Richard driving us around on tour this was of minimal concern. He even inquired at a restaurant (which was excellent) at the end of the tour to get us seated and oriented.
If possible, I recommend two days so that you can fit in the WW1 sites (or the WW2 sites if you spend your day on WW1—my point is that you will need multiple days to see everything so if you do one day you will need to focus). Richard’s command of the material is superlative and he is a wonderful conversationalist and a pleasure to be with. So an extra day will be that much more fun.
We are already thinking about when we can schedule a return trip to the area to complete the tour. Thank you, Richard, for a truly memorable experience!

What an incredible day! From the start, it was clear that Richard’s enthusiasm and passion for the history of Sedan and the Maginot Line were unmatched. His storytelling made complex events feel vivid and personal, and his energy kept us fully engaged from start to finish.
The private Maginot Line block house tour was an absolute highlight—driving through the battle grounds with someone so knowledgeable was an experience we’ll never forget.
What really stood out was how much our guide loves what he does—his excitement was contagious, and he tailored the day to our interests, answering every question with depth and enthusiasm. The Ardennes countryside was stunning, and it felt like we were traveling through history, not just visiting sites.
If you’re a history buff or just someone who appreciates great storytelling, this tour is a must. Thank you, Tuckertours, for such a memorable and inspiring experience—we’ll be talking about it for years! Thanks Richard

If you find yourself in Sedan or surrounding area, Richard Tucker’s Maginot Line tour is a must especially if you have an interest in WWI or WWII. My family and I spent a wonderful day with Richard. His tour was not only very informative but engaging. His passion and enthusiasm was intoxicating. Our 18 year old son who has always been fascinated by WWII history and this was one the highlights of our vacation. It was full day with many stops but it went by fast. Seeing the sights such as Ouvrage de la Ferte (where our tour guide, Roger was excellent), the area along the Maginot Line, and a small museum filled with artifacts found and cleaned by a gentlemen in Stonne put the invasion of France (events leading up to, during, and after) into perspective. Instead of just only hearing the stories, we were able to appreciate what it must have been like during the events of 1940 being the actual locations. We found ourselves wishing we were in Sedan longer so we could have taken the full 2 day tour that Richard offers. Richard is a teacher at heart who makes history fascinating for everyone of all ages.
Thank you Richard for sharing your knowledge and passion for this time in history. Our son appreciated the maps and books suggestions you provided after our tour. He hopes to go back with his friends and when he does, he plans to look you up. Cheers!

The full-day private tour with Richard was incredibly eye-opening, even for someone who likes to think I have a good understanding of the history of the region. From the moment he picked us up at the train station, he was welcoming and enthusiastic about this history and the people of Sedan. While the day would've benefited from a bit more structure on pacing and timing to ensure we had enough time at all the locations, we still enjoyed all the nuance Richard brings to history. As Richard's leg would've been a struggle to give a tour of the Ouvrage de La Ferté, his friend & fellow history buff Roger took my husband and I down into the fort. The two hours flew by, with Roger's passion and knowledge guiding us through the passages.
Thank you, Richard (and Roger) for an incredible journey through history!

If you are in the Sedan area, this is a must for those who enjoy history. Richard is very knowledgeable about the history of the area, especially military history. I spent two days with him, viewing military interests in the area from the Franco-Prussian war to World War II. Not only is he knowledgeable, but he is well plugged into the local scene of businesses and historians. Having a personal tour guide and driver who knows the area in invaluable (if you are staying in Sedan, ask him about his favorite B&B, highly recommended)! Thank you for your time and sharing your knowledge, Richard. Best of luck in continuing your tours!

Thank you for this for this very supportive comment. It was an absolute pleasure discussing events of 1940 and other campaigns. You obviously know your stuff! I'll mention your appreciation of the BnB to Charlotte and Michel, of course. Also thank you for sending the document we spoke of, I'm going to start reading it this afternoon. All the best. We took a maginot line tour with Richard Tucker and it was great! He is extremely knowledgable on the subject and he provides an in-depth analysis of the function and performance of the Maginot Line at the beginning of WWII. Be prepared to spend all day with Richard - it is well worth it!

We had an incredible two-day tour last week with Richard, exploring the Sedan area and discovering the Maginot Line. From start to finish, Richard was not only a fantastic guide but also a great storyteller. He took us by car to visit key battlefield sites, sharing detailed insights into the history of both World War I and World War II.
What made this tour truly special was Richard himself. He is incredibly knowledgeable, passionate about history, and full of interesting anecdotes—not just about the past, but also about his own experiences. We had some great conversations along the way, and he even gave us some helpful English tips!
Richard also provided additional materials to help us follow along with the explanations, making the experience even more immersive. If you're looking for a guide who brings history to life, Richard is the person to book. We highly recommend this tour for anyone interested in history, great company, and a truly memorable experience!

Thank you for this both generous and enthusiastic comment on the tour. We were certainly talking nearly all the time as we explored the beautiful Ardennes countryside, stopping at so many interestig WWI and WWII historical sites. I bet you''never imagined that there are so many fortified churches in the area! You were both great fun, and a pleasure to spend two days with. All the best. Cheers, Richard

Thanks to Richard for an informative tour to help connect the dots regarding the German breakout in 1940 from Sedan. His expertise and passion for the history of the Maginot Line was evident as he provided insights into the conflict not usually included in the mainstream narrative. Especially fascinating was the visit to Petit Ouvrage at Villy La Ferte. Its dramatic and tragic story brought home the desperation by the brave French force stationed there to stem the rising German tide. Further, visits to various casemates of the Maginot line helped us understand the French defensive strategy better. Richard’s authoritative knowledge and British wit made for an informative and fun day for me and my son. Well done, Richard!

I’m a bit late on this one, it’s been a few weeks since I went on the tour, but I wanted to know for sure what I was gonna say was true;
I spent one month in a vacation to Europe; I was there for the D-day celebration, I visited Paris, Munich, Berlin, went on a lot of tours, and saw a lot. The visit to Sedan and the tour of the maginot line was supposed to be more of an in-between item, happening between Normandy and Paris. But because of Richard, this tour ended up being the most fun thing we did on the entire vacation.
Richard is a man who knows his stuff, and he is clearly incredibly passionate about the topics he covers too. He gave a more understandable and comprehensive picture of his locations history than I got from professionals in Munich and Normandy. And on top of all that, he is an incredibly nice person, and a joy to have a conversation with.
Sorry this took so long man, I should have done it sooner

I would like to take a tour on 10/2/16 if possible I am staying at hotel St Michel please advise on available times and cost for tours
will you pick up at hotel?
Written 1 October 2016
Mr. Tucker does his tours only on week-ends. October 2nd is a Sunday. You would have to contact him through his webpage and find out if he can make it. He usually picks passengers up at hotels in Sedan, so, I don't see any problem with your Hotel St. Michel.
About cost, I did the tour solo and the cost was 150 euro, we spent 10 hours travelling and he provided lunch. You have to pay 40 extra euros for the private tour at the Fort de la Ferte. Your timing is short at this moment. Good luck contacting Mr Tucker.
