    Beautiful Palace
Lovely boat ride (approximately 20 minutes) to the palace. You must purchase a guided tour (only language offered was in German) and photography is prohibited. Unfortunately the restaurant was closed, but the cafe was lovely. The palace was modelled after Versailles and was absolutely stunning. A visual masterpiece.

A Delayed Visit to Herrenchiemsee was Great
With a day to myself, I went to Herrenchiemsee Palace and had a great time. The trip out to the island was by ferry for a round trip price of a little over €10, with a ticked to the palace and museums on the island for €11? With a sunny day and almost no people visiting, I had the paths circling the island almost to myself with views of the lake and mountains. This aspect of the visit had not been touted, but it is well worth doing if you visit. Always trumpeted as “unfinished,” I had never visited the palace though I’ve been in the vicinity on and off for years. That was a mistake. The palace only has about dozen finished spaces but they are in immaculate condition. Having visited Versailles, the inspiration for Ludwig’s palace, I thought the finished rooms compared very favorably. This was especially true for the mirrored hall and the major rooms. Given the limited tours of Versailles that I’ve been on, the “unfinished” aspects of this palace became irrelevant. Our guide (Carmina, ?) was superior with both excellent knowledge of the building, a good delivery style, and a sly sense of humor. Some unfinished spaces were turned into a musuem examining Ludwig II’s life. Completed 10 years ago, it is small but has some excellent decorative arts pieces and other ephemera of his life. A fan of the Texas sculptress, Elizabeth Ney, I really enjoyed seeing her statute of Ludwig II in the museum.

    Wonderful visit
We travelled by public transport from Munich to Prien. When the steam train doesn’t run from the town station there is a bus from the station to the lake which is to be recommended. If you have a Bavaria Ticket the bus is included. The boat trip was very pleasant and the boat can carry hundreds of passengers. We had booked an English tour online and there were only 8 people on it. Our guide was excellent and easy to understand. The interiors are marvellous as is the museum downstairs which is included in the ticket. I can imagine it gets busy in the summer so would suggest an out of season. The building is wonderful but I found it a very sad palace. King Ludwigshafen only spent ten days there.

Unsatisfying tour of an amazing architectural wonder
It's a very over-the-top palace in true Ludwig II fashion, and I find him fascinating. As he meant it to be, it's very much like Versailles in Paris. I would allow plenty of time to explore the grounds. The palace is not accessible by car and you must take a ferry to the island to get to it. From the dock, it's about a 20 minute hike to the palace, so don't expect to just pull up, park, and visit. We did not visit everything on the island, but the Palace was exactly as expected. Our tour guide was a bit disappointing. She had her script well-memorized, but did not deviate at all and gave us no information we couldn't have gotten off the internet. I have a book I got at Neuschwanstein about all of Ludwig's castles and it gave more detailed information than the tour guide. I probably could have given a more interesting tour. For example, something that has been emphasized everywhere is that Ludwig did not allow images of himself or family in his castles. However, the artists managed to put in a small painting of Ludwig at Herrenchiemsee, hiding it in a painting of some cherubs. I looked at every cherub painting I could find, looking for this portrait. At the end of the tour, I asked the tour guide in which room is was, because we did not get to go into every room. She informed me that it was indeed in one of the rooms we visited and I should have told her sooner that I was looking for it. But SHE is the tour guide. She knew it was there. Why didn't she show us this without me asking? A good tour guide gives interesting relevant information that adds a bit of color. I don't care how much the tapestry costs. I want to know why this particular tapestry was chosen. I want to know about the person who chose it. The palace and grounds are ornate and fascinating...the tour was less so. If you are interested in Ludwig II and his castles, I recommend buying the book about them. It's sold in all the palace/castle giftshops and has a lot of interesting information that you may or may not get in the tours.

Chiemsee, Herreninsel, Fraueninsel, the steamer trip, etc. are a must in Germany. After the crossing from Prien, we first explored Herreninsel and Herrenchiemsee Palace outside. The (unfinished) palace and the park, which is based on the Baroque model, are not that exciting. But we decided to take a tour of the palace and we didn't regret it!
The palace tour is timed, lasts 40 minutes and costs €10. It's well worth it. A young lady led us from room to room, and clear and easy-to-understand explanations gave background information on the building history, design and the life of King Ludwig II.
Photography is allowed outside, but unfortunately not inside.
Big praise to the always very friendly staff!

A beautiful mini Versailles which involves a ferry trip to view, so an exciting prospect for a day trip from Munich. The visit was ruined by the rudeness of the staff however. We took the horse drawn carriage to get to the castle, which is fun but very slow. So slow that we were 1 minute past our ticket time for entrance to the castle which initially refused us entrance. The staff seemed really uncaring that we’d travelled a long way to see the building but eventually we were allowed in on a German speaking tour with an English information sheet. The inability to ‘think outside the box’ or to compromise by the staff was a true eye opener. After all that the visit to this amazing building was rather spoilt.

Herrenchiemsee Palace was at the top of my must-see list, and rightly so! If you want to visit the palace, you have to buy a ticket directly at the boat dock, which will show the time of the next tour you have booked. You can then walk to the palace in about 20 minutes or take a carriage ride. The palace is the only royal palace of Ludwig II, which was inspired by Versailles and the French Sun King Louis XIV. Unfortunately, photography is prohibited. With the entrance ticket you can also visit the King Ludwig Museum in the same building, of which I have attached a photo and one of the palace park.

This was a really fun castle to visit but required some planning to get to the castle. You need to park, walk about 5 minutes to the ferry terminal, and then take a ferry to the island. The schedule for the ferry is set so you need to be aware of it. Once you land on the island, you walk about 10 -15 minutes through a forest to the castle. The castle is beautiful inside. Ludwig’s Museum is also adjoined to the castle and is worth seeing so that you can view some additional furniture and furnishings from his palaces.

Herrenschiemsee Palace is another of Mad Kind Ludwig's stunning creations. Meant to rival Versailles, it was never finished and only about 1/3 of the planned palace was actually built.

Even if you've visited Neuschwanstein and Linderhof - Ludwig's other, more famous creations - you shouldn't skip this one. Every room is incredibly stunning, with the highlight being the magnificent, dramatic hall of mirrors.

You can only visit the inside of the palace with a guided tour from an officially licensed guide. Tours are timed and in German and English, with printed information in a variety of other languages. Not sure how easy it is to purchase tickets onsite, as we went with a guided tour that made all the arrangements.

The palace also has a small museum about the life of Kind Ludwig, which you should not miss. It only provides a good overview of his life, but also introduces many of his never-realized creations. A great way to introduce you to the mind of this visionary and tragic figure.

If you don't read about this palace, you will never know about it and you will never find by chance. I had it on my list of 12 castles in two weeks through Bavaria and Tirol, I knew it and still had hard time getting to it. Any GPS will show it in the middle of the lake. You need to take the ferry, then keep walking away from it another 30 minutes and then ...boom it will show up in full splendor in your eyes from far away. It is magnific. Lucky, we got a beautiful day in September and the fountains were all working! gardens are so beautiful. this trip will take at least half of a day but it is all worth it! Go see it for yourself.
Tip: If you don't want or can't walk you can take a carriage, 3 Euros one way. There is also a short cut, don't take the main road, just follow the carriage way, much shorter.
I am attaching some pictures, if you want to see the drone video let me know.

Nice short entertaining tour. You must buy the tickets at the boat dock. Guided tour only at fixed times.
From the landing stage it is a 25-minute walk to the castle. You can also take a carriage.
