    Beautiful Tudor house
Visited Paycocke’s House on Easter Monday and had a really lovely afternoon. We pre booked the guided tour which lasts about an hour. Our guides were great, really knowledgeable and passionate about this beautiful house. The gardens were wonderful, sadly it rained whilst we were about to have a coffee, but there was plenty of room in the tea room. Definitely worth a visit if you’re in the area. Will return in the summer.

    Lovely staff
A lovely tour, lovely garden, well preset tour with enthusiasm and plenty of interesting facts and stories, nice tea room, very relaxed and a credit to the National Trust. Need to book in advance but always accommodating. Lovely small significant house.

A stunning property to visit with beautiful gardens and lovely tearooms . But what made this exceptional were all of the staff we met from the lady on the gate, the girls in the shop , the lady in the tea room and the fantastic lady guide who took us round the house . Keep up the good work ladies you are all a credit to the National Trust with your smiling faces and wonderful customer service .

Essex history right under our noses.
I would like to thank the team at Paycocke House for showing us round the property and offering us a history lesson that spanned centuries. Everyone was really lovely and the gardens were compact but glorious this month, and afternoon tea on the patio was a welcome treat after a journey. Coggeshall is such a hidden gem, a wonderfully charming town where its denizens take a pride in the surroundings. If travelling between Stansted and Colchester, its a must!

    Interesting history
Given that we have lived in Essex most of our lives, we have never visited Paycocke's House, so given it was celebrating 100 years after being given to the National Trust, this was an ideal time to visit. The staff in all the rooms were very knowledgeable about both the building and the people who had owned it, providing a very fascinating and condensed history spanning many centuries. It is also worth walking into Coggeshall where there are many interesting buildings, along with a fine church.

Stunning historical property - beautifully restored and welcoming, committed guides
We wanted to meet up with our friends to celebrate our respective wedding anniversaries and chose Coggeshall for both a lovely lunch (Ranfield Brasserie) and a visit to Paycocke's House. Both were superb choices and made it a very special day. The house and gardens are superb examples of past times and a really positive experience. Unfortunately we missed the play in the gardens but we met a lady who said how wonderful that had been. She and her husband had stayed for both performances despite only turning up on a whim.

    Caring staff.
Very kind staff. We went on a really hot day, looked round the beautiful garden and visited bookshop before our booked tour of the house. Unfortunately as the tour started I became suddenly unwell. The staff went above and beyond to make sure I was comfortable and ok. Took me to cafe and got me a cold drink, then checked up on me and found me a cool place to sit while my husband went and got the car to pick me up. Thank you so much.

    House and garden well restored
Restoration of this house and garden is to be commended. The front aspect of the house has quite a lot of detail. Interior well restored but not many rooms to see. Charming garden to sit out with tea and cake.

    Great day out in Essex
Visit date 30th November My wife and I went to experience the Tudor Yuletide as it was in 1511. The efforts the volunteers had put into making food and wearing fantastic costumes of the era was a credit to all. Their knowledge of the house, the food and their acting skills were quite impressive. The house is extremely well kept an is worth visiting at any time.

We pre-booked our visit online as access to the house is by guided tour only. The house does not have it's own car park but we easily found on road parking about 100m from the house.

Having arrived early we entered the garden at the rear of the property, where there was plenty of seating and toilet facilities. I had a lovely walk around the garden whilst waiting for our allotted tour time.

The tour starts in the garden with an introduction, and with external features pointed out. We then made our way to the front of the house again to view external features before entering the house.

We had two guides who were very informative. There were only four people on the tour so it was quite intimate, with plenty of opportunity to ask questions and to take photographs. The tour includes walking up a flight of stairs to access the upper floor. At the end of the tour there are narrower and steeper stairs, but there was the offer to exit via the main staircase if anyone felt they couldn't manage the staircase to the exit.

The tour took approximately one hour and our guides made the visit special. The property has a second hand book shop and a tea room.

We visited for the Tudor Christmas at Paycocke's event and it was so interesting and such fun imagining life 500 years ago.
We will definitely visit again in the summer for one of the escorted tours to hear even more about the house and have a stroll around the garden.
There is no parking at Paycocke's but plenty of parking in Coggeshall itself and some at N.T. Grange barn at short distance away.

We stumbled upon this property one rainy afternoon and found it really interesting. The hour long tour with time to wander at leisure afterwards is a must do. Our guide. ( unfortunately I can’t remember his name) was amusing, very knowledgeable and enthusiastic. A hidden gem in the Essex countryside and well worth a visit!

Allow people to visit without the need to pre-book for a tour. We travelled from London to visit the house as we have done since the 1970s only to be denied access. We have been National Trust members for many years and this was our first outing for two years. We have visited here many times and did not want or need to join a tour. It appears the new system is for the convenience of the National Trust, not members or visitors. We are seriously considering cancelling out membership. What is the point of paying a large annual fee to be denied access. Due to health and travel issues we are unable to pre-book. Shame on you National Trust!

As suggested its best to park at the barn first and walk to the house.

The barn had a good display about its history etc.

The house meanwhile was interesting to see with various displays about its occupants and owners.

This is National Trust property that has retained its character. Spending a couple of hours wandering around this house is a delight. You can imagine life in this house being wonderful for the privileged owner. The NT have set up a nice little tea room in the house which we used and enjoyed. Many original features of the house are viewable. You can only marvel on the skills of these departed craftsmen. A good experience.

Visited here on our way to Suffolk but what a lovely place! An old wool merchant's house only accessible with a guided tour on the day we went. This meant that you got a lot of space to look around and you could take your time. The guide was very informative and the tour length was just right.

We pre booked the tour of the house and found it really interesting. Whilst doing the tour and then walking around the gardens only took an hour, it was an ideal stopping point on our trip and definitely worth a look around.
The house has been restored beautifully and the tour guide was very interesting and passionate.

Visit is by guided tour. Our guide was absolutely lovely, very friendly and immensely knowledgeable. She brought the house to life.

Weather was good so it was pleasant to walk round the garden and had a play of quoits but passed on the croquet.

Coffee and scones went down a treat. All staff were very friendly. A really good morning was enjoyed.

We actually drove out today to visit the Grange Barn and take the circular walk. The Grange was closed so we did the walk anyway. As we passed this historic building, and we popped in. Luckily, there were some free spots on the guided tour of the house. The guide was incredibly knowledgeable.
