About
Mountain and Sea Guides is based in Lochcarron running all year round adventure activity on the great sea lochs and mountains of NW Scotland. We also take our staff and expertise overseas running sea kayak expeditions in the British Columbia wilderness in Canada, the jaw dropping scenery of the Arctic Norwegian Lofoten Islands and in the warm Dalmatian Islands of Croatia. SUMMER - sea kayak, climbing, mountainwalking, gorge walking and more: Our summer season is split between a variety of sea kayaking trips, all aimed at beginner and intermediate level, and summer hill walking and mountaineering. We run shorter 2 hour and half day sessions for people who want a taste of the activity, to enjoy time together and to see the true beauty of the area. Alternatively, join a weekend introduction or 5 day long expedition for more experience and more exposure to Scotland's hidden secrets. WINTER - climbing, mountaineering, safety training, skills, mountainwalking, snowholing

Mike is an expert, professional tutor and helped the whole family enjoy the experience of sea kayaking. Lyndsey answered all my questions prior to our visit. We thoroughly recommend this team. Felt in very safe hands throughout. Thanks!

I did the Introductory Wild Camping Sea Kayak Expedition 3 days course and I was blown away. Everything was extremely well-organized, from the communication with Lindsay, to the training and the actual expedition with Mike. Mike is an extremely experienced guide and also a very good teacher and I felt completely safe with him. I learned a ton about sea kayaking (I am a complete beginner by the way) and I can say that I enjoyed every second of it. The weather was on our side for the trip, it was a raining a little bit on Monday (training day) but it was sunny and not windy on Tuesday and Wednesday - just perfect to explore the Inner Sound and Crowlin Islands. I recommend this trip whole heartedly and I am now thinking of how soon I can go back.

We booked a sea kayak taster session with Applecross Mountain and Sea Guides. I was impressed by the extremely professional nature of their operation. Mike, our guide, was a highly competent instructor who quickly helped our three children to feel at ease in the water. Applecross is such a beautiful place.

Mike at Mountain and Sea Guides is an inspiring and extremely experienced mountain guide. He not only guided us some grade 2 (almost vertical!) gullies filled with perfect snow and ice he also taught us the skills we need to manage our own safety on steep terrain.

We did the 6 day grade 1 and 2 mountaineering course and felt both challenged and safe.

If you want to experience the best of what the highlands has to offer then you should definitely book onto one of Mike’s courses.

If you’ve found Mountain and Sea Guides then look no further. We were lucky enough to have Mike guide us through the jaw-droppping Torridon mountains on a two-day skills course. We had to postpone it several times due to lockdowns but it was worth the wait and I am glad we held our booking.

Mike was constantly assessing the weather and telling us of the signs around that indicated what was happening and would be likely to happen and his patience in waiting for everyone to grasp the subject matter or to catch up if lagging behind was incredible.

We are all experienced hill walkers in England and Wales but this terrain was new to us. Add to that, what we knew of how to navigate and read the situation was rusty at best, but Mike sharpened us up and encouraged us to revisit the skills when we were next in the mountains and snow in order to stay well-grounded and, ultimately, safe. Everything he explained was done so in a very pure and simple manner showing his 35 years of being a mountain skills trainer and with every consideration for his audience. We went over multi-person rope techniques for ascending and descending on snow and ice, how to self-arrest on a snow pack (as a last resort!) and gauging the conditions when using crampons including if you should even be on the mountain. We also did some micro-navigation which I had practically forgotten so feel much more confident of getting out of a jam if ever I am in one. Mike was also just a really good bloke and happy to talk about anything as we were driving between Lochcarron and the start of the course in Torridon.

I can’t thank Mike and Lyndsey enough for their effort in putting on the course and excellent communication. It'll love long in the memory and I can’t recommend them highly enough. We will be booking up again to do a trip to Skye and hopefully some summer sea kayaking. Superb.

Me and my dad booked a half day taster of the kayaking very last minute while up in Torridon on our mountain holiday. Despite it being so last minute we managed to get booked swiftly with good communication. On the day Mike was thorough with the onshore briefing and provided some handy tips on how to kayak safely. On the water we got a taste of how challenging kayaking can be and how fun it is. A lovely change from climbing the hills and giving our upper body a workout! We will be back in the future.

A very enjoyable and well delivered kayaking experience at the stunning Applecross. Not getting full five stars, due to wife complaining about rinsing the jackets on the return to base. :)

Good job and thanks Mike & Rob.

As a returnee to paddling I was seeking adventure, select remote locations, and people that shared my aspirations.
My expectations were to see areas unknown to me, review my ability and understand a pathway forward.
Mike far exceeded any expectation I had.
Clear leadership, clear communication and a level of lifelong experience and safety that can only impress.
Mike was consistent in his delivery to make our journey progress, to ensure safety, to widen experience, to share his enormous experience and to share his knowledge of both the immediate and wider area, including all aspects of sea kayaking safety and coastal navigation.
Mike ensures teams work , to make the team work, and facilitates an incredible experience.

We had booked a full day sea kayaking experience. Mike was very informative and safety conscious teaching us basics on land before heading into the sheltered Applecross bay for some in kayak practice. In the afternoon we went for a short kayak in a different bay at Toscaig. We were disappointed that much of the afternoon kayak was spent sitting in a sheltered inlet being told where we were going wrong. And we were back on dry land by 3pm. We accept that the wind picked up and my husband struggled with some of the techniques, but we both felt "short changed" by the whole experience. Basically not enough time spent in the kayaks. We were lead to believe that a sheltered site for kayaking would be found. Whilst Mike is quire rightly exceedingly safety conscious, we were expecting a good part of our day to involve kayaking along a coast and enjoying the wonderful scenery and wildlife. This day felt far more like a land training exercise with the actual kayaking cut short.

As the veteran of a number of sea kayak / wild camping trips in the Scottish Highlands and Islands, I can recommend the Raasay-Rona trip (3-7 August 2020) as one of the best.

The necessary skills and experience were fairly set out before bookings were accepted. Mike assessed the capacities of his charges, pushed them where needed and constantly adapted our programme to wind and weather. We all felt safe despite sometimes challenging conditions.

One campsite in particular was an inspired find. The catered option is strongly recommended: simple but wholesome food helps keep the price down and was better than having to pack kayaks with gourmet delicacies.

Mike's enterprise has driven him to devise trips not only in Scotland but in Croatia, Canada and the Lofoten Islands. Having seen what he has to offer at home, I hope some day to join him abroad.
