Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

I felt obliged to write this review after reading through the previous comments. Perhaps I am biased as a local resident, but there is actually quite a bit to see and do in the harbour basin. There are 4 cafes in Lyttelton that serve a decent breakfast , 2 in Governors Bay if you include the pub, and 2 in diamond harbour. You could spend a very pleasant half day on a tour of the harbour basin starting with breakfast in Lyttelton, morning tea in Govenors Bay and lunch in Diamond Harbour, with awesome views of the harbour as you drive from one place to the next. Ohinetahi is an amazing historic home and garden in governors bay open to the public on week days. Quail island in the middle of the harbour is a short ferry ride from Lyttelton (summer only). A walkway around the island takes you through extensive native plantings, historic quarantine huts from shackletons expedition to Antarctica, quiet swimming beaches and a ship graveyard. There are extensive hiking paths in the harbour basin- in fact there is a walkway around the whole of the volcanic crater rim that surrounds the harbour, as well as a great picnic spot and golf course at Orton Bradley Park in Charteris Bay. In the summer you can also swim at numerous beaches including Corsair Bay, Cass Bay, Rapaki Bay, Charteris bay, diamond harbour and Purau Bay. And all just a short drive from Christchurch on the other side of the hill.

The geology of this area is amazing this harbour was actually a crater of a volcano. Very interesting, once you walk higher up you can see it.

Lyttelton is a fun, quirky place to visit because, although it's 15 minutes from Christchurch, just through the long white tiled tunnel or over the
Summit Road and Crater Rim, it feels completely distant and different. There is a working port where ship life of all kinds goes on. The little town is located on a steep hillside, with multitudes of charming quirky houses and gardens. There's heaps to look at and plenty of opportunities for great dining and socializing. On Saturday mornings there is a very well patronized farmers market with quality produce from around the area.

I've always liked Lyttelton.
Dunno why, exactly.
Maybe its certain 'Bohemian' charm; the working feel, time-gone-by architecture - could be just the microcosmic collective of drunken sailors, scruffy bikers, modern hippies and the with-it middle-aged uppermiddleclass SUV residents.

Or simply it's an antithesis to the stuffy, clutching parochial Id that Christchurch has held on to since its inception.

Shame it got shaken to bits though, if you never saw it as it was the opportunity is gone along with the 100-year old mortar and lead pipes, stained-glass and time-ball ghosts.

But go there!

Sun and boats, fine dining or wholemeal muffins, log mountains and reeking creaking fishing boats. Terraced roads to challenge the turning dis-inclined and hooting grey Southerlies dusting this volcanic rim with Antarctic icing-sugar.

Visited on Wednesday 23rd May. As you drive through the tunnel you know you have arrived at Lyttelton and get to see the harbour stretched out in front of you. We went for a drive to Governor's Bay and back to Lyttelton so beautiful.

I have been living here for three months now and I really enjoy the vibe. There is a great market here every Saturday where I can buy everything I need for great wholesome/organic meals. When the weather is fine, it is divine. People here are lovely and kind. What more can you ask for? Oh yes, great little restaurants, coffee shops and pubs. Plenty of those here.

Provincial harbour. If thats what you are looking for then you are in luck. Otherwise - drive on past. You will miss nothing but some cranes and a gasworks.
