I hadn't been on a long cycling trip for over 20 year at the time I met Pooch in Madikeri a few months ago though i've been actively involved in other outdoor activities. With a little assurance and push from his side I was confident that I could cycle the 30kms route he had planned. The mountain bikes and gear we were given were of a reputed standard and it seemed like they were taken care of well. The first leg of our ride from Madikeri towards Chetalli was a breeze. It was mostly downhill (12kms) and very scenic. We got off our bikes a few times simply to take in the air and views. At a certain point along the route we turned off from this descent onto a narrow road that connected Chetalli to Maragodu. From here until we reached Madikeri (18kms) the ride was challenging as we mainly had to ascend to the top. We may have passed some real scenic spots on our way but i was too exhausted and too focused on my peddling to notice anything else. There were a few times when I had to get off and push my bike uphill. But when I eventually made it to the top I felt accomplished and basked in the glory of completing this 30km cycling trip. PEDAL WITH POONCH is not for everyone. But it's for anyone who is fairly fit and has a twitch for physical and mental endurance challenges. Apart from being an enthusiastic cycling guide, Poonch is also enthusiastic to share the in-depth knowledge he has about this region, its history, people and its culture. He is pretty much the 'go to guy' if you want to do some serious cycling and know the land better.
