Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

The Madikeri fort can be seen when you are at the center of the city. The fort is not at all maintained and has a Ganapathi temple, 2 elephant statues, a museum within a church and the fort complex. You cannot go inside the fort but can roam around but the place is not very appealing. Can be avoided till it is being renovated.

This is the palace building which is 100 metres from the government museum in an old church, which is open to the public. This palace/fort we can only see from outside, apparently it has been under renovation for years. No sign of any workers, though. Guard has no idea when it will open again. We can only wander around the outside compound area.

The main fort is abandoned. All we could see were dilapidated buildings with weeds growing around them. There is a main palace building which is under construction as of March 2023 so you can’t see that and there’s a tiny museum. Please skip if you don’t have enough time to see it, there is other nicer stuff to see.

Madikeri Fort and Palace were built in mid-17th Century, later rebuilt and restructured in granite by Tipu Sultan in mid-18th Century. The Palace was built and renovated by more Kings, then passed on to British control. They made additions to the fort and palace including two stone statues of elephants and St. Mark’s Church during 1834. The palace was under renovation during our visit, but we could see the Madikeri Fort Museum. It houses numerous exhibits displaying paintings, artifacts and weaponry during various periods. Worth a visit for any tourist to Coorg.

You drive into town and there it is! We ambled around, soaking in the ambience. Much of it was under renovation at that time; still what we could see was good enough for interesting photos. Especially the two almost-life size crazy-looking masonry elephants. Some archaeological displays too in what used to be a church I was told. I bought some excellent Guide books published by the ASI from here. Authentic. Inexpensive. Was planning my next trips when the pandemic hit. Coorg was my last trip in 2020

While on a trekking trip to Madikere, we friends took some time out to checkout Fort Madikere.
The place has a museum in a church and lots of offices on the premises. Lots of history is associated with this historical structure.
Good place to spent a couple of hours to know about history of Madikere.....

This place is nothing to see really. A collection of antique displayed in a old non functional church. There is no guide and the collection does not convey any story line.
The fort area is best described as a tiny fort like structure.
Overall due to no story line, no guide and no internal insights it is very difficult to appreciate this place. So can skip.

This is near to bus stand. We can park our car in the fort. Today, the fort serves as a government building. As per information, Muddu Raja built this ancient fort during the seventeenth century. This fort passed through many hands. The structure and design of the fort underwent significant changes as a result, the most significant of which were made by the British. Life-sized elephants, historical artifacts, and a compound wall were seen during our visit to the site.

Please don't go. Nothing much to see. Except two huge stone elephants. There is a modest museum. If you like history, art or historical art, then go for it. But otherwise, I wouldn't suggest this place to my friends.

This old fort was once a DC office and now this place is vacated by them due to a court order. From past 5 years, Madikeri fort is under renovation and there is nothing much to witness. We were told this renovation work will go on for another 2-3 years; and only after that it will be restored to its old glory. Hence, we plan to visit this place once more in 2025.

Written 25 September 2017
Hi,
It is 6am–8pm
I went around 5 pm and didnt find any kind of entrance office or gate to close it. So its pretty much open when the staff are there (there's a small collection room). otherwise, the fort is accessible from the outside throughout the day.
