Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We decided to walk all the way from Brugge to Damme a round trip of around 12 kms, by the canal.
It was a relatively easy walk, as it was flat all through. Enjoyed walking by the banks of the canal.
Damme is a very well preserved old town. Couple of cozy restaurants. We had the option of taking a steamer to and fro from Brugge. But we preferred walking.
Very well marked out cycling path too.

It’s always exciting to spot the first windmill on a trip. This became a regular sighting when getting back to our accommodation. It’s very pretty but we were unable to go inside.

We only got to view this from the outside which was a little disappointing. We were there on a Sunday morning and not much was open in the town

Although claerly indicated at the entrance that the mill is open for the public, little effort was made to guide the group of tourists. You can climb the staircases and oberve the working of the windmill but liitle or none information for foreigen tourists is given. A missed opportunity.

It may well be very nice but having walked all the way from the centre of Bruges we were disappointed to find that it is closed from end of September to Easter. We missed it by 2 days.

We were in Bruges for a week, and decided to bike out to Damme for the day. We had a great day, and this windmill was definitely the highlight of the day and the whole week!
We had seen a few classic windmills like this before, but never one that is fully functional, let alone one that you are permitted to enter and wander around while it's functioning! We spend a ton of time examining how it all works, and marveling at the engineering involved in building all of the gears and wheels out of only wood.
Very picturesque from the outside, but definitely go inside if you can, especially if it's operating!

A picturesque windmill just on the edge of town. We have been inside some years ago, but we always like to pause there for a moment when walking from Bruges to Damme, especially when it is being operated. Worth a visit if you are in the area.

if you've cycled all the way to Damme it would be rude not to stop off at this quaint little windmill on the return leg

I don't understand what I'm missing here - this is supposed to be one of the most photographed windmills in the world, but I didn't think it was any more special than the windmills we saw in Bruges on the ramparts.

If you are traveling in Northern France or Belgium and want to see a real Dutch windmill, the Hoeke Windmill is just minutes over the border from Belgium in The Netherlands. It is a working windmill that sits right in the town of Sluice and its really beautiful.
