Just watching this train meander through the snow covered Pöhlbach valley on the German Czech border was a wonderful experience. I can think of no better way to travel in winter for a days skiing, than through pristine fields of snow on this train route from Cranzahi to Oberwiesenthal, the highest town in Germany at around 893m. The journey takes... More

We drove up and down and it's a fun way to get on the views of the area. A pretty old but well maintained cabin and good stuff.

Ride the cool steam train from Oberwiesenthal to Neudorf and back on a wonderful sunny day. The train was loud and slow, but still fun. Insider tip, sit in a back car as the steam can be a bit overwhelming. There are numerous stops along the way, but we got off in Neudorf for the soup museum. Beautiful snow-covered scenery,... More

Had to travel from Berlin to Oberwiesenthal with public transport. The final part of the trip really surprised me. I ad to board a romantic old fashioned train with 2 real heavy old steam engines! Like a museum train. Just circulating and rolling every day here, as if it were nothing special. AMAZING!

This steam railway runs through lovely scenery on the German Czech border. The tickets are sensibly priced, the trains clean, comfortable and warm and the timetable is good allowing the train to be used as a service rather than just an out and back trip. The line is easy to get to by road or train (from Dresden/Chemnitz). The staff... More

A pleasant cable car ride on an autumn sunny day. Autumn country views were magnificent. Having my camera at hand was great. Once on top, the mountain walk begun ! Love to be here !

This was such a nice trip! Through the countryside in a historic train, really wonderful. You can stop off and get in again. I really would like to repeat this once with my children!

Running from Oberwiesenthal is the small guage steam railway, the Fichtelbergbahn. In the summer, you can stop off at forest locations and enjoy a picnic. In the winter, the landscape is transformed by a deep layer of snow (in many years up to 2 metres deep).
