A fifteenth century castle built on the remains of a much earlier site....

A fifteenth century castle built on the remains of a much earlier site. Following the arrival of the Anglo-Normans in Ireland in 1169, the district in which Fethard is situated was granted to a knight named Harvey de Montmorency. He, in turn, granted it to Christ Church, Canterbury, England. In 1200A.D. Canterbury ordered the construction of a castle at Fethard and a court to the north of the church, presumably on the site of the present castle.Email: hookinfo2@eircom.net

Just one of the many ruins on the peninsula

Just visit it when you are in the village or traveling through it. It is nothing really special compared to the other ruins and older buildings on the Hook Peninsula.

Sadly there is no chance to actually visit the castle. It's all fenced off (some fence seemed broken). Looks neglected and unloved...

If visiting Hook Head and the Lighthouse then a vist will complete the story and link the history. Unfortunately we arrived too late to visit the grounds but from what we could see the gardens would be worth a visit.

It really is advertised - but it is not wort it to plan a special trip there. If you are drving next to it - take a look. That should be enough.

Stunning ruin in the heart of the village. It was a shame that it was fenced off, but still a pretty building.

This castle is worth the effort and time to enjoy. Armed with good info we were able to understand lots more about the Irish history of this region. Keep up the good work OPW

Fethard Castle is interesting but it is difficult to really view due to the unattractive fencing around it. I am sure that the fencing is for safety reasons, but it really takes away from the castle. I would only recommend viewing the castle if one is already in the area, but it is not worth the drive otherwise.

There are so many ruins on the Hook, that this is not spectacular. But if on tour, see it BUT DON NOT MISS BAGINBUN BEACH & HEAD, which are close by.
