Hired a full suspension carbon MTB from Bike Menorca (excellent btw). Cost me £185 for 5 days rental, and included a helmet, lock, pump, tool and a spare tube (I only travelled with hand luggage). Used the 5 day route from their website, as I’m fit, but I wanted to take in the scenery and stop for fuel when needed (already carrying a rucksack so wanted to fuel on the go).
The Camí is really well signposted, with lampposts making the trail through the resorts, and markers all along the trail (I missed a couple of turnings, but you soon realise). What I will say is that it’s not really practical for a MTB experience. I had to walk circa 30% of it, as it’s so rocky and the descents and inclines in and out of the coves along the coast are pretty extreme. On day 4, it took me 7hrs to do 30 miles, that’s a long day in the saddle. Carrying a 7kg rucksack and then a 17kg bike up the steep parts is tough, especially in the midday heat (circa 23 degrees).
I saw a few other MTB’s on the trail, but it was mostly walkers, which is definitely my recommendation. Cycling it was really tough, and I wouldn’t recommend any section to cycle, they are all difficult. The worse was Cala en Bosh to Cala Millor (7hr day). Best thing to do is to hike it, plan for 20 miles a day max, which will take you circa 7-8 days, and you might want a rest day in the middle to recharge. Also, fuel stops en route are few and far between, so take as much fluid and food as you can carry (my strategy wasn’t ideal at times).

Punta Prima to Cala Sant Esteve is segment 19 of the Cami de Cavalls and was described as "Facil" - translation "easy" - on guides. Whilst the distance is relatively straightforward, both the climate and the terrain make this more "medium" than "easy" with some parts positively "difficult" in places. It was a warm (I thought it was hot) day, with strong sunshine. There are some stunning views and I was lucky enough to spot a tortoise (see photo) and a pair of Hoopoes feeding at ground level. Allow longer than the suggested times and take plenty of fluids. The route is well signed with markers every 200 yards or so. In rural areas these are wooden posts (see photo) whilst in urban parts a white rectangle, above a red rectangle, on street furniture denotes the correct route.
Tip - Take your time. The terrain can be challenging. You don't want an injury, especially given the inaccessibility of some stretches. Make sure you have water before you depart (there is a water fountain in Punta Prima) and stay hydrated.

The trail to Cala Turqueta was marked easy everywhere we looked. It was not easy. Every other part of the trial was as described, but I think this part might’ve been washed out. It was extremely rocky, quite steep at points, and took us more than twice as long as all the guide books said. We walk about 5 miles every day, I would say we are in OK but not fantastic shape. Bring more water than you think you need!

El Camí de Cavalls is a 185 km trail that runs along the entire coast of Menorca. It is accessible on foot, by bicycle or on horseback, in its entirety or in stages. There are routes of low difficulty or others with high difficulty.
We made a piece from St Tomas to Son Bou. Despite the heat, it was a beautiful walk that made us discover a different image of Menorca. The path winds through the countryside but always with the sea on the other side; wooden gates and walls delimit the various fields where horses, donkeys, cows etc. graze. We were recommended to always close, once past, the gates that open to pass by, often serve to prevent animals from moving from one property to another.
Recommendation to bring comfortable shoes and small bottles of water.

Incredible and sometimes challenging coastal
Walk. We went from Cala n Bosch near the lighthouse, down the bottom of the island. Discovered the most beautiful beach, white sand and turquoise seas! Amazing day 🌊🧜🏼♀️

Walk 1: take the 65 bus up to Ciutadella and walk back to Cala'n Bosch.. simple. The first bit through the town is negotiated by looking for the strips on lightposts etc until you reach the coast. Half way through it gets more rural as you head towards the lighthouse. There are plenty of places to stop for food and provisions en route up to Cala Blanca. The walk is around 15.5K
Walk 2: take the 65 bus to Ciutadella again but then from there the 68 bus to Cala turqeta (first bus at 10.15am, not Sundays,, it's only a 16 seater so best to book). Then walk back to Cala'n Bosch. This one is really rural and goes past some stunning beaches and glorious rocky coastal sections. You need to take provisions though as there isn't anything en route. around 12.5K

'Just completed the Cami last week (125 miles approx), with four days in the saddle and one rest day in Ciutadella, at the half way point. I hired a MTB from Bike Menorca in Mao. Highly recommended, with well maintained bikes and a couple of very helpful guys who both speak great English. 5 days hire cost €65, with lock, helmet, repair kit and spare inner tube included if required. I must stress that this is more of a technical ride rather than an endurance one, as progress is very slow due to the incredibly challenging surface conditions: sharp rocks, large tree routes, etc The route is extremely well signed throughout. I've done many different long distance bike rides on and off road, both at home and overseas and on balance, I think that this route is better suited to walkers rather than cyclists. If you want to go mountain biking (or road biking) there are plenty of other options elsewhere on the island. Menorca is definitely worth a visit, just leave the Cami De Cavalls to the walkers!

My boyfriend and I happened to have found one of the routes by chance when we were at the Santo Tomas beach, and walked all the way to Son Bou. Without a doubt his has been the best hike I've ever been on. The ever changing scenery of the rocky cliffs by the sea, wheat fields, and colourful planes are definitely worth seeing. Although some terrains are rocky and steep, the paths are nicely marked and well thought out for travellers.

This is trail running with a difference. There's very little altitude gain but the terrain can be brutal - especially if you slip. If you are thinking of running the Cami de Cavalls, I'd recommend downloading a free app called Menorca a Guide (I think that's the name) - there's a section on the app called activities and within this section there are 20 maps which make up the Cami de Cavalls. The beauty of the maps is that they provide a distance for each section so you can add sections together for a manageable running distance and you can load a map on your phone and track your progress as you're running. Although the path is well signposted, I did go wrong a couple of times so I found it comforting to know I was going the right way according to my phone's GPS.
With accommodation I made a point of staying in a village/town which was a start or end to a section. This way I could just run in one direction (then back) on days one and two before I needed to bother my wife to drive me to the next section.
The path is a mixture of rocky gravel, sand, dirt and urban asphalt. Appropriate footwear is a consideration and I'd advise wearing shoes with some ankle support but not too heavy. The rocks are razor sharp in some places and managed to chew through the sole of my trail shoes (Adidas Supernova Riot 5). However I would still wear the same shoes again as they worked well on all surfaces which I'm not sure something like my Innov8 Rocklites would do.
I'd also recommend taking a decent compact camera as some of the areas you access along the path are breathtaking - just annoying you have to stop and take a picture.
For hydration I've always used a Camelbak 1.5l - more than adequate.
I'd avoid running in the middle of Summer - not only can the heat be brutal but there are a lot of other people on the path - they'll just get in the way. I've done my most enjoyable running during Autumn half term - nice and quiet, temperature a comfortable 23C and flights/accommodation reasonable.
I'd suggest hiring a car so someone can take you to the path and collect you from the end of it. I averaged about 15 - 20km a day which worked well as I was dropped off around 10.30, the rest of the family went to the nearby beach for a couple of hours and then made their way to pick me up. We all then went for lunch.

Our recent discovery of the Cami de Cavalls after having a house on Menorca for over thirty years has been a wonderful revelation. It's a round the island walking trail extending to 110kms and is fully described and mapped in a book published in different languages which is available at most bookshops and newsagents. My wife and I are in our seventies and don't wish to tackle the more strenuous sections but by consulting the book it's possible to select shorter/easier walks which are suited to our abilities. The book grades the walks according to difficulty. We tend to pick a walk which looks attractive then drive to the start where there is usually car parking available. Over the past two years we have discovered parts of the island that we didn't know existed previously. The discovery and restoration of the Cami de Cavalls is a wonderful addition to the amenities and attraction of the island. It would be wonderful to see hikers' groups and ramblers' associations discovering this beautiful walking challenge.

Hallo Siegfried ,

Hi, I’m wondering what rt you took, and were there plenty of options for lodging?
Written 26 November 2023
Hi - the Cami de Cavalls is only one route, but obviously you can walk it clockwise or anticlockwise, or a mixture if you do the stages separately. I did about half of the stages clockwise and the other half anticlockwise, depending on the logistics of getting to the start and finish, as I mainly used the bus services.
There are lots of places to stay in towns and resorts. Don’t expect to be able to walk the route and easily walk to a place to stay each night. It’s probably easiest to base yourself in Mahon for half of your stay, and Ciutadella for the other half, and use the bus services to access the Cami where you can. Some of the north coast has no bus service, so you would need a taxi/ hire car if organising your own transport.
There are also companies which can organise all transport and accommodation.
