Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

What an awesome place just a 7 min drive from Cromwell.Allow at least 3 hours unless you get hooked on gold panning and yes those who are lucky can still find gold and keep it.
The staff are wonderful and the guide included in price is awesome and informative. I now know all about sluicing.
Demonstration on water powered machinery used over 130 years is still working.
Put your walking shoes on and trek over the rugged hills where once the miners walked, worked and lived. Along the way check out the reconstructed Chinese village . Walk takes about hour.
This is a great attraction not to be driven past.

We arrived quite late in the afternoon and only had barely 2 hours to spend. The time went rather quickly and although we saw much of what was of interest, we could have spent much longer. The tour guide was excellent and shared her knowledge with enthusiasm, You could really get a feel of what it was like for the prospectors and what a tough an existence it was. A bit of fun at the end panning for gold rounded off a most enjoyable time. I think the whole family would be able to find something of interest which would be memorable and would make a good morning or afternoon for them.

This was a excellent tour. Industrial heritage at it best. Our guide Chris gave a great talk about the history of gold mining in the area, and then demonstrated to water powered machinery in action. He was able to engage adults and children alike Finally we were given a lesson in panning for gold. Chris demonstrated by adding two tiny pieces of gold which he managed to retrieve from the gravel and sand he was panning, but in addition and to his surprise found and additional plaid of gold! Sadly none of the rest of the group managed to match his skill/ luck.

Definitely check out bookme for a deal to get in! But don’t let that stop you, this is a great experience for all ages. Has plenty of activities and walks to do. Spend a few hours over there, pan for gold ( fortunate to find 4 flakes) walk around the two loops.
The history talk on the gold rush is very good, super informative and will catch your attention.
There is onsite pizzas and cocktails. Gift shop has some beautiful pieces of art and collectibles.

Awesome experience. We have driven by Gold Fields every time we have visited Queenstown, but never called in. We are so glad we did as its a hidden gem. Fully interactive tour and such engaging staff telling everyone about the history of the area, and yes, everyone gets a chance to pan for gold.
Highly recommend

Excellent place to visit to be made aware of the history of gold mining in New Zealand . The talk, walk, gold panning and seeing the ore crusher in action made the visit so enjoyable. Thanks to Glenise for sharing her knowledge.
Make sure you take the time to do the long walk around the site.

So pleased we visited, it has the right amount of guided walk and self guided walk that even the kids (6 and 8) stayed interested. Learned alot about nz's gold mining history and we all loved trying our hand at panning for gold. Would definitely visit again.

Wow, what anamazing kiwi experience. The staff were so helpful, kind and passionate about sharing the history and gold lore for the region. The talk was informative and seeing the 130 year old machinery at work was a blast. Panning for gold was fun too and also very peaceful. I loved seeing the historic buildings. This is an activity great for kids and adults alike. Allow for three hours to get the full experience.

A warm day here in the mining area, got us thinking How terrible the condition must have been for the miners Living and working here….both summer and winter. And especially the exploited Chinese who lived in small sheds in the area.
We found the place Very interesting. What would have made it more special, would have been to walk into a tunnel.
Trying to pan Gold was fun…and I understand How people Can get ‘the rush’ if finding Gold……we did not !
We think it is a sight worth visiting, and yes it is not cheap, but keeping up a place do cost some money!

Really enjoyed a couple of hours spent here discovering some of this amazing countries history. Declan our guide was super knowledgeable and interesting to listen to. Some awesome feats of engineering to see and thoroughly enjoyed having a go at gold panning. Amazing views down the river.
