We were driving on our way to Matera and saw this huge arched ruined structure on a hill town in the distance. It was such an impressive sight that we had to investigate. And what a lovely little hill town. Most people seemed to be at a wedding at one of the churches with someone in a ceremonial outfit and a brass band, all very interesting and colourful. We wandered on the the ruined Chiesa which has notices explaining what had happened to the church from the 1694 earthquake and then final abandment in 1760. Impressive structure and well worth the detour.
