Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We had a lovely lunch in the visitors centre and tried some fantastic afrikaans food. The memorial was splendid - you do need a 4 x 4 to get here though the roads are something else - but totally worth it!

Spectacular monument, easy to appreciate the geographic aspects of the battle from the many lagers & river. Good museum and knowledgable & helpful hosts. Whilst this site did not have as much resonance for me (I'm British) I was able to appreciate why it sits so heavy in South Africa History.

We went on a tour with Elisabeth Durham. This is a very well maintained and cared for memorial. Very interesting, great coffee and gift shop, well worth the visit.

Very moving experience; magnificent and appropriate memorial which gives concrete definition of "circle the wagons."

I visited the site again after close to sixty years and was pleasantly surprised to see what has been done to give you an idea and feeling of what it must have felt like during the battle. Don't rush your visit and you can even consider making use of the accommodation on site. I would suggest that you phone them before the time to get directions because the two roads leading there are not properly marked.

as South Africans the Blood River Covenant is one that all of us know or should know.
The danger and hardships that the Voortrekkers had to enddure is mindboggling, especially when overlooking th eveld and imagining the open wide terrifying area that you were scouting to find an area where you could settle. Nrver mind the sadness of the killing, provoked or not of the persons looking to settle in an area that was regarded as the Zulu area and not to be settled by Foreigners. Not understanding each other like all over the world caused the battles instead of trying to get understanding by talking.
Power play always has destructive consequences.
It was a good reflection on our history and a reminder of where all South Africans come from, and we should avoid in the future.

we went to Blood river heritage site with the qualified professional guide of our accommodation in Dundee (Elisabeth of Chez Nous guest house) and had a great time, she told and explained us all about the battle with interesting details on how and why it happened, we are glad we visited the site, it was an interesting experience. The site offers a place to watch an interesting short movie about the historical battle and it is really worth getting to see the replica of the lagger itself with the 64 oxen wagon. Highly recommended visit!

A knowledgable and highly competent management team now run the excellent museum and its attractions. It was a pleasure to meet the delightful Judean and Anton who have done a marvelous job in restoring the attraction back to its glory. The accommodation on site, although basic is more than comfortable and would be recommended if one arrived late in the day.
We both wish this wonderful couple all of the best for the future and do hope their efforts are rewarded.
This was a segment of our Battlefields experience.
Kindest regards
Trevor and Andrea

Blood River is extremely interesting and well worth a visit. The video explains what happened, all be it from the 'winning' perspective. The site itself is quite eerie with the wagons ranged round and each one identical. Just be aware if you are planning to eat there and are a vegetarian, choice is limited to a cheese and tomato toasted sandwich and vegans will starve!

Having the memorial where the battle took place is very thought provoking and atmospheric. The audio visual was well done and clear. The restaurant provided good local fare which was served with a smile and very tasty so make sure you grab some lunch!
