Agropoli is a city located on the coast of the Tyrrhenian Sea, in the Campania region of southern Italy. It belongs to the province of Salerno and is located in the Cilento, Vallo di Diano and Alburni National Park, an area characterized by breathtaking natural landscapes and a rich historical and cultural heritage.

Here is some key information about the city of Agropoli:

1. **History:** Agropoli has an ancient history dating back to Greek times, when it was known as "Akrai". Over the centuries, it has undergone various dominations, including the Romans, the Byzantines, the Lombards and the Normans.

2. **Agropoli Castle:** One of the main attractions of Agropoli is its imposing castle, which dominates the historic center. The castle has Norman origins but has been renovated and expanded over the centuries. It offers panoramic views of the city and the sea.

3. **Historic Center:** The historic center of Agropoli is characterized by narrow streets, stone houses and small picturesque squares. It is a pleasant place to walk and soak up the traditional atmosphere.

4. **Port:** Agropoli has a tourist port that contributes to its maritime life. From here it is possible to organize boat excursions and enjoy the crystal clear sea.

5. **Beaches:** The city has several beaches, some of which can be reached on foot from the historic center. The beaches of Agropoli are known for their clean waters and fine sand.

6. **Culture and Events:** Agropoli hosts cultural and folklore events throughout the year, giving visitors the opportunity to discover local traditions.

Agropoli's location, between the hills and the sea, makes it a fascinating place to explore, with the chance to appreciate both the natural beauty and historical richness of the region.

I spent two nights in this charming little southern town during my solo trip to Calabria. It's really good to live there (Dolce Vita assured
Not very touristy (in June), the locals are very nice and everyday life is not too expensive.
Lots of activities to do and see
A real favorite for me, I will come back with great pleasure.

I remember two lengthy relaxed summers in the area twenty nine and thirty years ago, with Agropli our go to town out of San Marco, Santa Maria and Casallabate. Here my preschool sons would play light up games with 100 lira pieces and think they held a fortune.I'd send them down the street on their own for bread, milk and eggs to earn their coins for our Friday trips to the game rooms.

Returning for the first time since this summer, everything is much more different than the same, save for the historic houses and attractions. The Greeks held great sway here, as did the Romans. Scratching the surface of this history is fascinating, and the free castle and museum of archeology are very good places to start.

For something slightly more modern in visual affect, along the wide traffic free shopping street just near the end before turning to ascend (opposite a fish market and above two ladies' cloture shops, if you look carefully at the second floor, faint lettering still whispers most of the letters of "Viva Il Duce" as well as two Fascist slogans in Italian.

It turns out this building was a headquarters for Benito's local military operation. In speaking with a few locals, it's clear that many felt his hamartia (tragic flaw) led to the sin/hubris (almost always based in excessive pride ) of his connecting with Hitler and eventually the nemesis/consequence/fall. This Greek drama formula acts itself out whether in 444 AC or 1944 AD.

Why the Greek references? My father, born in Sicily, always contended there is more Greek than Roman/Italic blood in the South of Italy and many recent scientific blood tests point to that case as well.

The new town is not a typical Amalfi Coast resort. It is popular with Italians and has masses of restaurants and shops to offer. Everything is incredibly cheap compared with the tourist towns!
A little Italian language would help but is not essential.

We spent 10 days of our holidays in Agropoli and it was just great. All in one: wonderful warm sea with a long sandy beach and fantastic sunsets, plenty of good restaurants nearby, mozzarella and ricotta di buffalo, great historic center with a medieval castle, several supermarkets nearby, and a romantic and relaxed atmosphere of an Italian town - all this is Agropoli. We really loved it and will be happy to come back

I spent two weeks in the beautiful resort of Maiori recently.
However having spent a few hours in the overcrowded and overpriced though beautiful towns of Amalfi and Positano, I was so happy to discover Agropoli.. Sheer bliss!
An easy 40 minute train journey from Salerno , a 15 minute stroll to Agropoli 'New Town' (friendly locals, excellent cafes and squares) then up the steps into the 'Old Town'.
A wonderful new museum 'Acropolis'. lovely churches, a Byzantine castle with amazing views and crowd free. What's not to like ?
If you are coming to this part of Cilento on holiday then you have certainly made the right choice.

I love the beach here. There is also a lovely shopping area and you can go up to the top and get a spectacular view of the port. I have gone to Agropoli twice in four years and hope to go back there again.

Agropoli has been inhabited for the past 4000 years and the town, located on a promontory, affords stunning panoramic views over the Thyrrenean Sea and towards the Amalfi/Salerno coastline. It's a real pleasure to meander through the narrow alleyways in the old town, to enjoy a local pizza from one of the terraces overlooking the harbour and to visit the Aragonese Castle, partly in ruins but well maintained. There was a photographic exhibition during the time of the visit.

We were staying further along the coast towards Salerno, and made a day trip to visit Agropoli.

What a beautiful town!
Lovely walks along the sea, and up the hill to the older part of the town.
Well worth a visit.
