Lovely place to stop while in this area of Tuscany. The frescoes are magnificent. Since it is a working monastery, one gets a feeling for monastic life. There is a cellar, with knowledgeable staff, to taste and purchase the wines and olive oils produced there.

This is a beautiful abbey that is actually still in full function. We enjoyed wonderful inside stories about the abbots who live there (from very young to very old ones) from the friendly guy at the gift shop. I really enjoyed the architecture and rich frescoes telling the stories of how the abbey come about. Being a photographer, I could... More

This monastery is extremely well preserved and still active. The frescoes are worth at least an hour, full of moral tales of temptation. Library, pharmacy and refectory are beautiful. Finish with a quick meal at the Ristorante La Torre, the best feature being the deserts, excellent chocolate and pistachio cakes. Simon Hanley +447828417512

On arriving we heard magical gregorian chanting as the monks went about their daily business. The frescoes, particularly those by Il Sodomo, were amazing. Remember to take a donation for the library.

Extraordinary wall of frescoes. Would recommend bringing a book that tells you their story as information provided is limited.

The owner of the Buon Gusto Gelateria in Pienza (the best gelato in Italy!) speaks English well and recommended that we visit a monastery near his home town of Chiusa - Monte Oliveto Maggiore. We took his advice and enjoyed an experience equally as satisfying for the eyes and mind as his gelato was to our taste and stomachs. It... More
