Castle of Montgrí is located at the top of the Serralada de Montgrí (Montgrí Mountains), which is located in the surroundings of the town, in Costa Brava Region, in the North of Catalonia. In fact, we hiked from the town to the Castle on a Sunday of January and it was full of people. It is a very known hike to do at the weekend. It is a very nice walk, from where you can see very nice views of the coast and especially the Medes Islands. Also, you can go up to the castle and walk around the upper part, from where the views are better. Very recommended excursion for adults and children.

The castle looks so imposing from all directions we decided to take the part up to the top. It is a fairy easy walk but with a few sections where you need to steady yourself and use one hand.Take plenty of water - the views from the top are worth every drop of sweat. We took the circular route down walking NE to start - shown as shorter but steeper. Quite a few sections you need to use both hands to steady yourself - next time we will godown the same route as we went up

On a fairly cloudy day, go up from the parking lot on the left. Easy to do with good (walking) shoes. Quite a long walk. Be sure to take plenty of water with you. We went down clockwise. The red/white path also runs there. Well there is no path there. This was climbing and scrambling downhill. Next time I will take the same path down as I did up. A fantastic view above. Enjoy some drinks and food in a tower above. Bring your own because there really isn't anything available. But all in all definitely worth it.

The view from the castle is amazing. We have gone as a family a few times, if going in summer season go late (after 6pm) as otherwise it is very hot! Going for sunset is beautiful take a picnic & water. Wearing trainers/ walking shoes is recommended as path is a little rocky in places

Nice walk🚶‍♀️🚶, we started from Urbaització La Torre, Avinguda d'Andorrra.
In order to make an 8.7km loop. The climb to the castle from this side is relatively steep.
The view of the castle is beautiful, we were able to climb the stairs into the turret.
It's beautiful... it's nice

Do not mix Montgri Castle (located near Torroella de Montgri) with hotel "Castell Montgri" in L'Estartit, which is registered in TripAdvisor - these are completely different places situated in different cities.
I believe - Montgri Castle is one of the most important points of interest for tourists who stay either in Torroella de Montgri, or in L'Estartit.
Ok, we came to L'Estartit to get sunbathe and swim into sea. But to tell the truth it is so boring to do this things every day for a week. So I in advance planned to visit some interesting places and walk to mountains.
There is a beautiful footpath from Torroella de Montgri. Path marked by special red-white signs. Nice nature, mountains, hermitages on the way, monument with cross on the half of way, castle itself, and exciting view from Castle walls and towers - view to Torroella city, to Medes islands, to L'Escala.
Also - tourists who have a time can go ahead - there is a pretty monastery behind the mountain.
Before trip I had found some maps and Navigator tracks in internet - they can be found with search according key words "Climb to Montgrí castle" on site _www20.gencat.cat/portal_ or according "TORROELLA DE MONTGRÍ – LES DUNES"

We're in our 50's, I'm as fit as a butchers dog, the wife, well she's as fit as the bakers dog. After looking at Montgri Castle from our campsite in Estartit I decided to drag the other half to the top after biking the 5 miles to it. We locked our mtbikes outside St Gabriel's school, where the walk starts. im a bit of a mountain goat, so this is the wife's version. The first few hundred yards are pretty easy, right up to the first stone built building. The next 100yds to the cross is steep but manageable. From the cross the views are amazing yet it's just more than half way up. Note the church on the East side- we never went there. The rest of the climb was pretty tough under foot, loose in places so be careful. The track zig zagged to the castle and in certain place offered a short cut. Don't do the short cuts, the markings are there for your safety, stick to the route. At the top we were rewarded with amazing views, an amazing structure and the blazing temperatures. It was after all 1200- mad dogs and Englishmen! Returning to the Mtbikes the route could be quite demanding in places, coming down isn't as easy as you think. It took just over an hour to summit the castle and took 45minutes to return. Take plenty of water, seriously you'll need it in June. We also took some sandwiches up there and chilled out for an hour at the summit- (In the keep door well) We returned to our campsite 5 miles away pretty upbeat looking back at Montgri Castlle. For myself, I found this hike fairly easy, for my wife, she found it quite tough but was happy she did it, she's actually bragging about it now. Do it if you're there for some time, you cannot just keep looking at it, it has to be done! Good luck.

If our 3 and 6 year old can climb up to the top in the midday heat, so can you! It really is a fantastic experience and the views on the way up and at the top are amazing. The castle's fun too. Bring plenty of water (we had almost 2 litres between the 4 of us & was only just enough), plus snacks. Also worth starting as early as possible i.e. before 10am and make sure you have proper footwear plus a hat. The path has lots of stones so open toe shoes will be useless. From the other reviews I thought it would be super tough, but it's totally manageable if you have a medium level of fitness. I've attached some photos of the path. It took us around an hour to ascend (with a 3 & 6 yr old) and 50 mins to descend. It's a bit tricky to find the car park - keep following the road round until you get to the sign (see photo) where the start of the walk is. Make sure you follow the red and white lines to show you where the path is. Enjoy!

I have holidayed in L'Estartit since a young child but never actually took the walk up to this castle until my late twenties. It's a fairly long walk from Torroella de Montrgi, with some parts of the trek being quite steep over rocky ground, but once at the summit you are rewarded with beautiful views over the bay and the emporda plain, right over to Begur in the south and Roses and the Pyrenees in the other direction.

To make the experience even more special, my partner asked me to marry him at the castle so this trip holds ectra special memories for me and my family. My children are still quite young but we plan to also take them on this walk soon during one of our visits.

My kids called the Toroella de Montgri castle the "Lego castle" from the day we arrived! It really looks like the kind of castle a kid would draw or build - square with circular towers in each corner. The castle was never finished, so there is not much more than the exterior to see, but climbing the steps to the upper walls gives a fantastic 360 degree view of the area.

The path is quite easy to find (signs from the main road) and well marked with red and white. There is hardly any shade on the way, so bring water and a hat! We used approx. one hour up, less than half down. Go!
