It's only a short trip and dependent on ice but luckily there was some sea ice on our trip. We didn't go far beyond the harbour but the pilot did steer through some ice. Embarkation was very well organised. No seabirds to see unfortunately.

I was in Abashiri during Feb 2018. It was an hour cruise near the habour as the ice was too thick to go out to the sea. Ticket was 3,300 Yen and several cruise times a day. The ship "Aurora" was big and lots of...More

(If you'd increase the probability about seeing the drift ice,I suggest to stay at Utoro)

We took the morning train Sapporo and arrived in Abashiri at noon which gives us just enough time to catch a quick lunch and the 2.00 pm sailing. It was a first time experience for us and the scene was awesome especially when we were...More

This icebreaker cruise is often sold out days in advance, so we were surprised when we arrived to see that there were two icebreakers, the Aurora and the Aurora II, and both were used. The cruise is popular with Asian tourists, and several tour busses...More

We were extremely lucky to experience almost perfect conditions for the day/ time of our sailing. We had space to spare on the Aurora even allowing for comfortable conditions on the outer deck. It is an amazing spectacle to experience the drift ice on board...More

I expected more thrill but my family was scared even to step on the ship. Hence, golden middle is what this is. Captain responsible for 200 people on board went for a safe trip on icy waters near the port. Mainly manoeuvring between the large...More

A very great experience that one should at least try it in their lifetime. You won't regret! We actually detour to Abashiri purposely for this icebreaker cruise and it is totally worthy!! Price is way cheaper than those in Northern Europe too.

First, I have to qualify this review by acknowledging that I have seen major ice floes in Antarctica. If you haven't had that experience, I think this would rate higher. As it was, when we were there in February, it was snowing and grey and...More

You can check satellite photos of drift ice at its facebook (search for this name in facebook 流氷観光砕氷船おーろら). It is updated daily though in Japanese (Google translate does better job than Facebook engine).
