- nutondevWarsaw, Poland14 contributionsSuperbly pleasant morning thereI had a blast there! I spent 2+ hours just sitting on a stone, with my feet in the shallow crystal-clear water of the river, watching grey herons hunt, staring at the aqueduct, and I was also lucky with the clear skies weather. I might visit it once more and go to the museum, but for this time the nature experience was my main point of interest. I was initially shocked the public transport connections are so poor (3 bus departures from Avignon PEM, each ca 4 hours apart), but maybe because of it the place is not overcrowded.Visited October 2023Travelled soloWritten 11 October 2023
- Peter1NorthamptonNorthamptonshire, United Kingdom396 contributionsWorth planningThere’s some nice hikes in the grounds of the aqueduct so plan ahead well and you can spend some active time here in a nice outdoor location. €9 to go in with a car, some people park in the village and walk in to avoid the cost, but that’s not what we are about. Worth the trip. We booked for the 1030 English tour but got stuck in traffic in Nimes and were late arriving at 1100, the receptionist tried to get us on the French speaking tour but the guide said no! We got booked on the 1600 tour and walked the site anyway, apart from the very top. Would recommend to visit but no need to book a tour.Visited October 2023Travelled with familyWritten 4 November 2023
- mariannerutterAmesbury, Massachusetts14 contributionsAncient Roman engineering marvelSpectacular archeological site near Avignon, France, is not to be missed. This combined bridge and aqueduct is among the best preserved ancient Roman sites in the south of France. A pedestrian walkway on the lowest tier of arches gives visitors unparalleled vistas of Roman imperial engineering -- amazingly, the bridge is still a working aqueduct today. The museum on site is, in my view, a missed opportunity; a large modern building with very poorly organized exhibits TOO DARK inside to view properly or get a meaningfully integrated sense of the place. (I actually took a tumble on one of the sets of steps masked by poor lighting.) The museum does have a short film with good size analogies to other large structures (airplane, Statue of Liberty) to enable one to understand the scope of this 1st-century A.D. construction.Visited November 2023Travelled soloWritten 28 December 2023
- hydrojoeOttawa, Canada279 contributionsThe Pont du Gard marvelPont du Gard is a Romain aqueduc built built in the 1st century and carried water from the mountains to present day Nîmes. Bus tours are available from Avignon or one can drive to this location. This site has a great welcoming centre where tickets are sold to visit the site. It's a short walk to the actual structure. A better view of the overall picture of this construction is available by walking across the aqueduc to the other shore of the Gardon river. There is a small museum, shop and cade at the sight but there are not the reason to visit. The overally setting of the Pont du Gard is a also very pretty. Make sure you go up the steps (on either or both sides) to see the view from above. A bientôt ! - DavidLille, France1,912 contributionsVery well preserved! It is really excellent that this feat of roman engineering has endured so well, such that we are able to walk across it 2,000 years later. Parking charge of 9 euros reasonable IMO to support the location (it's free to enter) , although clearly some others disagree. There are some ruins of the old aqueduct course in the vicinity that I'd have loved to explore further!Visited April 2024Travelled soloWritten 1 April 2024
- Amber D6 contributionsFree entry to this amazing bridgeAmazing structure & to think of how it was built all those years ago. Make sure that you are looking at the original side as the new side is the one that has the parallel walkway next to it. Don’t be persuaded to spend out on entry. It’s free. We walked in, across the bridge, through all the paths, gardens & lookouts free. You can pay to park & also pay to see a poor film in the theatre which does little to explain the construction & Romans at this time. The museum is included in the theatre price. It has a lot of information in various languages. Very detailed & hard to read in the dark. Tends to get a bit monotonous. There are places to eat & the expensive gift shops but this can be a free day out & a very enjoyable one. - Merv NealAberdare, United Kingdom286 contributionsStunning Roman EngineeringAs my wife and I meandered down through France this summer we stopped off and visited this stunning piece of Roman engineering. Standing for some 2,000 years it shows how amazing Roman engineering was. The car park seems a shocking price at 9 euros, but don't let that put you off. It includes the entrance to the viaduct and you can wander around both sides of the river bank and just take it the sights. The ticket shop will try and sell you a guided tour and entrance to the museum, but you don't need to . Just download some historical details from Google about the aquaduct and away you can go. There are some cafes where you can just sit and take in the stunning architecture and enjoy a coffee, snacks or an ice cream. Well worth a trip.Visited May 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 29 May 2024

This is an overrated monument. Better and more impressive Roman bridges and Acueducts exist all over Europe and the Middle East. I will mention as aqueducts that surpass it: Segovia in Spain and Istanbul in Turkey. The bridge at Valencia de Alcántara is also much more impressive.
It is however worth a glimpse of course. Loads of visitors prove this and I found it very interesting. However, arriving on foot from a nearby hotel is a nightmare. Cars, buses and bicycles know where to go and what to do. People on foot have to climb around a closed gate, reserved for emergency services, and there is no sign whatsoever.
Web page information is unreliable at best. The "son el lumière" advertised at 9.30 PM is in fact scheduled for an hour later. Logical because it is still light at 9:30. But I would have arrived an hour later had I known and would have been less incomodated by bugs.
And the "son et lumière" started 5 times after it stopped working and went dark after about 4 minutes and was rebooted. All this on the weekend of July 14th!!! The lighting before the show seemed a lot more interesting than the show itself though, so not really frustrating at all, but rather better off for the early departure from the premises.
If you have the time, go for it, but it is not worth a detour at all IMHO.

We wanted to see the PduG but there is a notice on the web site saying you can’t enter the buildings without a Pass Sanitaire. I have already been refused entry to one French monument because they did not accept my UK vaccination certificate. We still wanted to see the PduG so we drove there hoping to just pay for parking and then view the site from a distance. Not possible. The only option is to pay the full entry fee even if you are then barred from the buildings. It was not explained anywhere exactly what WOULD be open to us after we paid the full fees, so we gave up and went home. The French government and the people who run sites need to get their act together.

We visited here on a small group tour of Provence, so arrived after the museum closed, much to our disappointment. However, just to see the aqueduct and walk over it and along the river was amazing. Such glorious construction that has lasted all these years, it is quite the engineering marvel. It would be hard to find such a mason crew in today's world to construct such an enduring structure. It is also interesting to look at the past's graffiti carved on the stones - some of it centuries old. Be sure and look at the three olive trees on the opposite bank as you are walking back to the parking lot - they are reputed to be over 1000 years old!

The aqueduct is impressive and worth a visit!
We arrived around 5 pm in June and it was not crowded. We drove and had to pay about 9-10 Euro for parking. Admission to the aqueduct itself is included; however, the fee the to the museum is extra

Well worth seeing and good value ( €9.50 per adult inclusive of parking and museum). Covid-wise you will need a ‘pass sanitaire’ for museum and cafe or restaurant. Retain the visitor (not car park entry) ticket to scan on exiting the car park.
Parking is on both sides of the river south of the aqueduct. It is accessible, relatively flat and you can easily cross to the other side to take photos from all angles and both north and south of the aqueduct. Cyclists can also traverse on foot.
There are also viewing points at each end of the aqueduct but up a lot of steps!
In the high season you can travel across via the water channel at the top.
The museum is quite dark so a bit hard to see some of the text, but descriptions and interactive displays are in four languages. The gift shop is well stocked and the cafe is reasonably priced.
Well worth seeing how the Romans built it nearly 2,000 years ago - it’s also a World Heritage site - allow a good couple of hours take it all in !

Must see Roman architecture. The museum was also quite nice. We enjoyed the many beautiful trails that have hidden gems and lots of history spread all over.
9,50 per Person includes parking and entry to the museum and grounds.

History and a swim! Seeing a Roman aqua duct is amazing in itself. I would recommend the $9 to see the museum and film to have a better understanding of the history. Although you can go see the bridge for free. If it is summer, bring your swimsuit and picnic lunch and you can swim in the river underneath it. There is a snack shop as well. That was our highlight although there are lots of options to hike around as well.

I have wanted for years to visit the iconic Pont du Gard so there was a danger i might be disappointed with the reality but that was not the case - its fantastic! The main car park to the north of the river is well laid-out and the 9 Euro parking charge is the only thing you have to pay unless you want to join a guided tour so its not that expensive. Its about a 15 minute walk from there to the aquaduct via a modern visitor area with a cafe and gift shop etc but you can just walk straight through and on to the main attraction which is awe-inspiring as you approach. We walked across the bridge and then went down to the rocky riverside area on the south side and spend several hours just enjoying the view and swimming in the river before returning. This really is a wonderful place to visit and although it is popular it never seemed crowded.

It was only 9.50€ for parking, to see the bridge for free. We went on a non-holiday Monday on the hope of it being less crowded, but it was packed! The walk up to the top was short and with shade, but a fence to stop you going on the top! Last time we came it was possible to walk along the top of the aqueduct, and I presume it is for safety reasons that the fence is in place.
It's a shame you are no longer able to walk across the top of the Pont du Gard, but both seeing the aqueduct and swimming under it were wonderful experiences.
Defiantly recommended.

This was a nostalgic visit for me because the last time I was here was over 30 years ago - at that time we were allowed to walk in the very top of the aqueduct. For obvious reasons that isn't permitted any more. It's a remarkable piece of Roman history - built in the first century AD it's the highest of all Roman aqueduct bridges, and one of the best preserved.
This site also has a beautiful beach, walking paths, a historical garden (oldest olive tree!), a museum and a gift shop. You could easily spend the entire day here! Admission is less than 10 euros per adult, so there's a lot to enjoy if you plan accordingly.

Thanks so much linnae55 - your step by step is still spot on! I have an October 2022 update for visitors please: when you are going to the PEM bus station, go to Gare Avignon Center, then face the Gare as indicated and the Ibis Hotel is the first building to the left. Right to the left of the Ibis Hotel is the now well marked PEM bus station. You just walk in and it’s very easy, there’s a departure board and a person behind a counter to help you find the quai. The fare is now 1.50 euro each way. Line 115, departs Avignon at 845am arriving at the Rond 921am give or take a few. It takes about 15 minutes to walk to the welcome center. You do *not* need to buy a ticket upon arrival, a ticket is only required for the on-site museum and any exhibitions. Use of restrooms and all other facilities is perfectly allowable to all visitors at no charge. Coming back, the 120pm is convenient to return to Avignon PEM and allows plenty of time to explore the Pont and grounds plus lunch. To find the way back pickup location - when you approach the round about, it’s on your left before crossing down about a half block. HAVE FUN!

I see pictures of a nighttime light show projected onto the structure, but I haven’t found any commentary about it. Is this a regular production? If so, when does it take place? Is the area restricted so that you would need to pay a fee to get onto the river banks to watch the show? We will be visiting in mid June and I imagine it would not be dark enough until at least 20:30.
