Whilst on holiday in the Algarve we travelled inland to view the local countryside. We drove North from Monte Gordo following the Guadiana River to Alcoutim where we stopped for lunch. With a population of under 3,000, Alcoutim is quite small but has a Castle, Museum and Church that are well worth visiting. From Alcoutim you can look across the... More

A very nice day's itinerary is a drive from Castro Marimto to Odelette and from there along the Guadiana River to Alcoutim. The castle and its views across the river to Spain are the main attractions Human occupation dates back to the Irin Age and artefacts from this period are included in the small museum in the castle. The castle... More

The castle has been restored to provide an interesting insight into Portugese history. The views from the walls are gorgeous, crag martins gathering on the castle walls in the sun and blue rock thrushes darting around are a bonus. The small attached museum houses some interesting artifacts and the earthworks give a glimpse of what was there before. A huge... More

Of course you have nice views from the river banks but the castle offers the best ones, plus there's a little archaeology museum, plus a little walk inside so given the low price (1.50) yo should try it!

A small historical fortress town on the Guadiana River with old world charm. Visitors can now 'Zip Wire' between Spain and Portugal...great fun. Very hot in July and August but well worth a visit

While the castle is not big, but in a good shape, you will enjoy the view of this little and old border village along the river. The entrance fee is 1.5 euro per adult and free for children (so if you are on a budget, you cannot bypass this one !) They are providing you some leaflets that they have... More

The castle oversees the Rio Guadiana. It is a lovely place to be in the afternoon sun. The archaeological museum is probably interesting, but your Portuguese language skills have to be up to date. All the descriptions in the exhibition are in Portuguese. We did not understand the lengthy descriptions. We hope that the museum management will spend some Euros... More

This is only a small castle and museum but the entrance fee is only cheap and the views from the castle are fantastic even though it was raining when we were there. The town is lovely and a little boat trip on the river is a lovely way to spend some relaxing time in Alcoutim.
