Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

This monument touches me as it represents all the seafarers we have lost at sea over the years. A very poignant and sobering reminder of the dangers of our life at sea

A monument to a local sea tragedy. We came across this when visiting Porto during a cruise I was with my partner, his sister and her family early August 2023 whilst walking alongside the beach and stopped off to take a look. There is also some information provided. A fitting monument displaying the emotion of such a tragedy.

As you wander down the beach to the shipping port, you will see these statues, of family members wanting their family members back from the sea. Well worth taking a look.

On other trips we've taken to Porto, we did attend a Fado show which went into detail about how all the families have their own plaids. The purpose is to make it easy to identify the drown family members upon their recovery. It is a nasty piece of reality that goes along with the occupational baggage fishermen must carry.

Here is a commemorative statue depicting the crippling events of December 1 and 2, 1947 when several fishing boats went down taking 152 crewmembers with them. The cost in human lives would expand to include 72 widows and 152 orphans.

Their pain is palpable.

This sculpture right on the beach is a must-see. The history behind it is explained and when you see how the artist has depicted the suffering you will be amazed. Incredible!

Loved this sculpture but wasnt quick enough to get a photo of it. It shows a cross section of family members beseeching the sea to return their loved ones.
It is a memorial to the local fishermen who died in storms in 1947 and represents all the bereaved families left behind.
I just loved the tribute, how the figures are standing helpless on the sand.

We made a detour while exploring Matosinhos and heading towards the fish market to check out this heartfelt modern statue and read about the tragedy it commemorates, and didn't regret it.

Worth wandering to the beach to see this impressive 'poignant monument and to learn about the tragedy it commemorates. It's also next to the town's main tourist office.
