- operalover939Toronto, Canada2,946 contributionsFine collection; wonderful settingLocated in Hoge Veluwe National Park, his museum is famous for its collection of Van Gogh paintings and works by other Impressionist and Expressionist artists, as well as more recent works. The paintings are indoors, the sculptures mostly outdoors in the large park surrounding the museum. The total effect is quite wonderful. Highly recommended.Visited October 2023Travelled with familyWritten 8 October 2023
- @martinsinstaphotosSvalbard, Norway36 contributionsUplifting - so much better than the Van Gogh Museum.A bit of a trek but a much more uplifting experience than the sad sad show at the horribly overcrowded Van Gogh Museum in town. The sculpture garden will keep you engaged for a few hours or longer if you like a walk or want to picnic in the grounds. A good slice of the 20th century greats are there. Great art with no crowds and a lovely cafe for lunch-this is what a gallery should be. One of our Uber drivers from the day before was willing to take four of us there and back for 250 euros for the day as an “off-line” deal. He got to run some errands and have a sleep (has a very young family) while we enjoyed the museum and it was way faster than public transport. Please make the effort to visit.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 10 October 2023
- Sarah In YorkSheriff Hutton, United Kingdom61 contributionsIf you love Van Gogh, go.Stunning paintings in a light airy gallery. If you like van Gogh, definitely visit. Far fewer people than in Amsterdam and you therefore can get close to and spend as long as you want with each painting. fabulous sculptures, in a glorious, tranquil woodland setting. Friendly staff, ok food in cafe, smallish shop but lots of wonderful postcards of the art.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 13 October 2023
- Penny RNanaimo, Canada223 contributionsFabulous museum with the second largest collection of Van Gogh paintings. The museum is quite beautiful and in a gorgeous setting. The Van Gogh collection is outstanding and there are many other famous works on display. Containing a sculpture garden and beautiful walking trails, it’s an easy place to spend the day. In addition, the museum is set in a national park with miles of biking trails. There are 1800 white bicycles for free use throughout the park. I stayed in the small town of Otterlo because I could walk to the museum. Nearby Arnhem or Ede-Weneningen would work too either by bus or car.Visited October 2023Travelled soloWritten 12 December 2023

Beautiful museum with outside park and outside sculptures. The Van Gogh collection was amazing. - sovtaWynnewood, Pennsylvania338 contributionsA Duet Enjoyed Kroller Muller MuseumJust a visit to the Kroller-Muller Museum from Amsterdam to the museum was well worth the time and effort to enjoy a fantastic collection of Van Gogh's artwork. Without the cost or availability of a guided tour. We took the train from Amsterdam Central Station to Ede -Wageningen station we transferred to bus 108 to Otterlo bus 106. It sounds long and complicated but it isn't. The train, busses were easy, timely connections both ways. A short walk from the 106 Bus Stop to the museum entrance brought several hours of joy, a well presented lunch with many appetizing options and an outdoor sculpture garden with many hours to enjoyVisited April 2024Travelled with familyWritten 1 May 2024
- dale_riverNew York City, New York644 contributionsWorth the effort to visitSince this remote art museum in a national park is difficult to reach without a car, we hired a guide to take us from Arnhem. It’s a marvelous place—well worth the time and effort for anyone who loves fine art! The collection, housed in a 1938 structure by Henry van de Velde, holds more Van Gogh paintings than you’ll see anywhere outside Amsterdam, along with numerous works by notable artists such as Monet, Signac, Mondrian, etc. The landscaped grounds are serene, dotted with visually striking sculpture by the likes of Rodin and Moore. We also liked the gift shop and café, where you can relax an open-air pavilion surrounded by greenery. We are simply delighted that we made it here on our second trip to the Netherlands.Visited May 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 21 May 2024
- Debbie VBovenkarspel, The Netherlands109 contributionsEnjoyed every minuteA wonderful museum but if possible get there early as it did get extremely busy later in the day. (We arrived at 11am and had the Van Gogh expos almost to ourselves, a couple of hours later, you could hardly move in there) The sculpture garden was stunning and with a backdrop of rhododenrons it was just magnificent. Tea and cake in garden of the museum cafe was a lovely end to our visit. This is an expensive excursion when you add in the price of entry to the National Park especially if you only want to visit the museum.Visited May 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 27 May 2024
- intrepidtravelerflaSt. Petersburg, Florida493 contributionsAmazing. Go!!!!I am a true lover of Van Gogh. I have been to Amsterdam many times and the highlight of my trips has been to spend time at the Museum there, However, the last several times even with ticket limits the museum has been packed and it frankly has lost a great deal of appeal. So when I had a free day last week in Amsterdam, I arranged a car to take me to the Kroller and it was beyond magnificent. I didn't have time to visit the park but the next time I will make a day of it. As you probably know, Helene Kroller-Muller purchased her first work by Van Gogh in 1908 and today it houses the second largest Van Gogh collection in the world. 88 paintings and over 180 works on paper are there and it is like a dream come true for anyone who loves art and Van Gogh, The museum when I was there on a beautiful Saturday morning was empty. I was there 4 hours and when I was leaving scores of buses were rolling in. I had galleries literally all to my self and Van Gogh's masterpieces. I highly recommend the Kroller. It is a hike from Amsterdam but worth every penny and more. Make sure you get a ticket to get into the park AND to the Museum, All are easily done online. You will not be disappointed. Thank you Helene for your brilliant contribution to the world of art, Take the time to learn about Van Gogh and his tragic life and enjoy your visit to this amazing place.Visited May 2024Travelled soloWritten 30 May 2024

Van Gogh's famous paintings are on display. Although it was a Saturday, we were able to easily purchase tickets for the museum on the day, and we were able to purchase tickets for the national park from the bus driver.
Initially, we had planned to take bus number 108 from Ede-Wageningen station, then change to bus number 106 at Rotonde Otterlo, but when we checked the 9292.nl app on the morning of the trip, we found that the train from Utrecht to Ede-Wageningen was partially suspended due to adjustments caused by a vehicle malfunction, and naturally the bus route from Arnhem beyond that was also unavailable. So we quickly took the reverse route from Apeldoorn in the north, changing to bus number 108 at Rotonde Otterlo, and arrived at the planned time. (On the way back, I went via Ede-Wageningen.)
According to the app, the museum runs to Otterlo every 30 minutes, and from Otterlo, the Ede-Wageningen and Arnhem trains run alternately every 30 minutes. Both trains have a waiting time of less than 5 minutes at Rotonde Otterlo and connect to other destinations.
By the way, the "9292.nl" app shows the recommended route to your destination in real time, and is a must-have app for solo travelers in the Netherlands. It can also be displayed in English, so I recommend downloading it to your smartphone in advance. (The water bus timetable was also useful when we went to see the windmills at Kinderdijk.)
In addition, I bought a Holland Travel Ticket off-peak because I was planning to travel to Utrecht and Rotterdam from Leiden that day. It was a Saturday, but the off-peak ticket, which allows unlimited travel within the Netherlands, is a bargain at 48€ on weekends and weekdays after 9am. To buy tickets, go to the orange NS ticket machine, ① select English in the language options in the bottom left, ② Other Products, ③ Day Tickets, ④ Holland Travel Ticket for off-peak, ⑤ if using on the day, select Valid today, then select your class and pay by card.

The museum was opened in 1938 and is based on collections made by the Kröller-Müllers, a wealty Dutch couple. The museum is situated in the middle of a National Park, a beautiful green area near Otterloo.
Due to the location it is necessary to buy tickets to the National Park to access the museum. Admission to the park is charged for each person, and if you want to go by car there is a charge for this also. Alternatively, it is possible to park at one of the park’s entrances and go by bike. Admission to the museum is charged separately and is EUR 12 for adults.
The museum is especially famous for its large collection of works by Vincent van Gogh. Some of his most well known works can be seen beside works by Picasso, Monet, and other great names.
Also, the museum has a huge sculpture garden with a large number of modern works, including Jardin d’email by Jean Debuffet. This work of art is special, since you are actually allowed to touch it and walk on it.
The museum is definitely worth a visit.

From Amsterdam Amstel Station, take the Intercity to Edo-Wageningen Station in 46 minutes.
I found bus number 108 at Edo-Wageningen Station bus station, and when I got on, the driver told me that I bought a special discount ticket for two people called Meermanskaart Oost with my credit card for 20€.
The bus was late, so I got off at Ottelro Rotonde, but the bus I was supposed to take, number 106, had already left, so I had to wait for the number 106 bus 30 minutes later.
The number 106 bus was a black Mercedes station wagon type with 9 seats. I was worried if it was really a bus, but I was able to get on by showing the Meermanskaart Oost.
We had already purchased the entrance ticket to the national park from the website, so it didn't affect us, but several families had not yet purchased their tickets, or they had mistakenly thought that they could enter with just the ticket for the Kröller-Müller Museum, so we had to wait a while at the entrance until they purchased theirs.
We drove a while on the bus from the entrance to the national park, and finally arrived at the museum.
The museum is mainly about Van Gogh, and there is even a Van Gogh Gallery, but there are also other works by Seurat, Renoir, Cezanne, etc., which was very interesting.
There were also plenty of shops and cafes.
On the way back, I took bus 106 and left at the exit for the national park, but because it was a one-way street, cars buying tickets to the national park were stuck and I had to wait a little, but I changed to bus 108 as planned (the transfer time on the timetable was 3 minutes) and returned to Edo-Wageningen station and Amsterdam Central station.
If you are going to the Kröller-Müller Museum on your own, it is important to purchase your national park entrance ticket in advance! There is a warning on the ticket purchase screen that says, "Don't forget!"

Second largest collection of Vincent Van Gogh paintings in the world and that was my primary reason for visiting. Superb paintings in a superb location. It is an unusual setting but the history of the collector explains why. I agree it takes effort to get here but nothing ventured, nothing gained. It is a must after visiting the VVG museum. We were short of time so took an Uber to the entrance of the park, paid the entrance fee to the park and then biked to the museum. If not use to bikes, better to walk, no brakes on the handle bars but an unusual way to arrive. We used the Amsterdam transport app to calculate how to get back, a bus and train.Took over 2.5 hours travelling to and from central Amsterdam. It was quite popular with the locals too, so busy but not the same amount of people as the other central museums.Classic VVG paintings on display, so if a fan, have to go. Delightful cafe and shop…a faultless museum.

This is a lovely art gallery in the centre of a beautiful park. You can use their white bikes for free to ride through the woods and then venture into the art gallery (you need to pay for separate tickets). The only downside is that the cafe menu is very limited and very overpriced. The soup came with two tiny brioche rolls and didn't fill us up for lunch. The kids lunch box was full of sugary jam and chocolate sprinkles and a very soft apple. We were still hungry later so after the gallery, we went to the Pavillion cafe in the actual park which had alot more choice, reasonably priced and tasty!

As a complete art novice, I couldn’t help but be impressed by the collection, so many famous names with pieces displayed here. Beautifully set out and with time allocated tickets, it didn’t feel crowded. The cafes were very reasonably priced with plentiful seating. The gift shop only accepts card payment.
After my visit, I researched the museum’s fascinating history on it’s website, I can highly recommend doing this as it gives a deeper appreciation for the dedication of the museum’s owners and curators over the years.
Also worth mentioning the museum’s setting, in the Hoge Veluwe National Park which is lovely in itself. A curious distant volley of machine gun fire accompanied our visit to the sculpture garden, from the nearby military area.

The museum and it collection are incredible. Try not to miss. It is not easy to find but not that difficult if you follow the instructions on the website. From Amsterdam you have to take a train and two buses, but all too worth it. The museum is in the middle of a national forest. You can spend a full day out. You will see some of the best Van Goghs but also a lot of other great impressionists and post impressionists. Do not miss.

A fantastic museum in the most unlikely spot, in the middle of a national park many miles from the nearest town. The museum collection was the work of a nearby rich family who donated the art to the museum. What a gift. This museum has the second largest collection of Van Gogh paintings in the world, and a lot of painting by famous French impressionists as well. It is all on one floor. There is a good gift shop. The only downside is you have to pay the admission fee for the national park to get to the museum, effectively making this a fairly expensive museum to visit (close to $30 each as I recall). Nonetheless, it is worth it.

We have been to the Museum twice before and on this trip we will have 3 hours to visit the museum inside and the sculpture garden before driving back to AMS to catch a flight. Is this enough time for a leisurely visit to the Museum? We might be able to also visit the Museum for 1-2 hours the day before prior to closing but we would like to avoid double admission to the park and Museum. We will have exhausted the 5 museum limit using the Museum Card. Thanks.

Are there any small group tours from The Hague? I'd love to go to the KM, but the logistics of getting there by public transit are daunting. The best I've come up with so far is taking the train partway and taxi/Uber the rest of the way.

You do not need a guide, at the museum you can borrow a handled that guides you into the museum and , do not forget, the park.

Hi there, i m interested to get there from central Amsterdam. How much would a taxi cost for round trip or hire a private driver that day?
And I m still planning my trip in early October, can I buy the ticket when I arrive the museum or I have to book in advance?
Thank you so much

You do not need to book in advance. Nevertheless check on their website as there is a special on Van Gogh where you might have to. You can take a train to Arnhem and then a bus or taxi. Taxi from Amsterdam will be expensive: over € 100 one way.
Written 28 September 2016
Hello. How do you pay for the buses? Can we pay the driver for each trip? How much is it? I want to make sure we bring the correct change so there's no fussing. Thank you for taking a minute with me.
Written 18 July 2016
Hi!
As a rule, when traveling to new cities,. we try to get day tickets (as opposed to one-ride or one-hour ones).
Although apparently more expensive, they have often proven to be useful due to the inherent lack of background / information you're facing, which easily will have you switching lines or even taking this or that bus one or several stops back (laugh all you want).
Amsterdam has a travel card (7 EUR + fare), similar to the London Oyster. If you decide for this, you can take your card home and return to Amsterdam to re-use it with the unused funds still there.
This being said, we were slightly surprised to see that the last leg of the journey (to and through the park itself up to the museum entry|) was NOT covered by our public transportation and had to be paid IN CASH to the driver of a small Mercedes minivan that would take you to the museum entrance inside the park.
This ride, if memory serves (please comment on this if wrong) was in the neighborhood of 10 EUR for each of us, including the return trip to a bus station where public transportation can be used.
The amount is like a park entry fare including transportation and DOES NOT include the museum entry fare.
In fact, it looks like the museum entry cannot be paid without having previously paid the park entry.
Museum entry fare was paid by card and therefore not in my immediate memory. Somewhere around 10 EUR/person I would say, subject to severe error. Museum cards would probably shave off seriously on this amount.
Convoluted as this my seem, hope it has shed some light.
