This impressive complex was the most interesting site of the city. It was built by Sultan Beyazit II from 1484 t0 1488 and comprises of a mosque,, a hospital, a medical school, food warehouses, public kitchens and a bathhouse. It was built to serve the public and provide health care provisions in an era when the west primitive means compared to the standards of this institution, Being a physician I was surprised to enjoy my tour there, seeing the animated wards fir patients in a variety of specialties, and the rooms and training classes of the medical students,. Patients were treated with music played by an orchestra there. Today it serves as a Museum of Health, and display of function and duties in the place is excellent and quite rightly it was awarded international distinctions.

This place is 9ne of the first medical universities in the world. Built in mid 1400 when the rest of Europe was still dwelling in the darkest.of ages, here, a vibrant culture and quest for human science and discovery was blossoming.
The west owes everything they know and are to the oriental civilization, period.
Easy to navigate, great dioramas, extremely interesting and informative, beautifully preserved. Adults and kids alike, do not miss this one!

An impressive museum, both through complex architecture, the overall look of the place, fitting rooms exhibition, and especially by age and the advanced level of medicine throughout the Ottoman Empire history.

Beyazid Külliyesi Health Museum is a definite must see while you are in Edirne. It is easily accessible from the center by the local bus 3 or 3A , prepare change as you have to pay the exact price(2,50lira) on board. A short drive will take you out of historical town and put you in a beautiful green setting where the complex is located. The health museum is an award winning museum and you will know why as soon as you get there. The whole complex is very well kept, gardens are beautiful
Don't skip the mosque which is just where the exit is located thinking ' another mosque ...' Yes it is another mosque but another very special mosque...

First of, get a taxi from the city you get there. Locals think it is a 10 min walk, but it is not!
The place is a combination of a very well designed and kept mosque, court and medical school from the Ottoman era. It is children friendly and enables people from all ages to learn and spend quality time. If you have time, sit in the School or mosque court for a while, the cool breeze will take your troubles away.

I have visited Edirne several times but this was my first and not last visit to the Museum of Health (Sultan Bayezid II Mosque complex). It is several km from the city center, on the banks of Tunja river and for centuries it was one of the best state hospitals in the Ottoman Empire. Sultan Bayezid Ii ordered in 1484 to build a complex consisting of a mosque, medical school, bath, and hospital.
The astonishing fact is that in the darussifa (‘house of health) mental patients were cured by music (harmony and rhythm) and calming murmur of water at the time when in other countries mental patients were being burned at the stake considering that they are possessed by devils…
The complex earned ‘Europe’s best Museum’ award in 2004. It is interesting and educational also for children as it is a wax museum too. I had only 3 hours for visiting the museum and time was not enough. I intend to visit the complex again and stay for half a day there.

This historical museum and health center is located a few kilometers outside of city center. Especially the health center is very interesting. By the aid of human templates, you can imagine how they cured and healed people 500 years ago. By the entrance you dont have to pay a fee. (But i must remind that, it's my own country!) As a result, i recommend you to visit this museum/health centre.
