About East Somerset Railway
A Trip Back In Time Come and meet our friendly staff and take a relaxing ride on our heritage steam train through the beautiful Mendip Countryside. The return journey takes approximately 40 minutes and is a 5 mile round trip. You pay once and you can ride the trains all day! As well as riding the train you can visit our engine shed and workshop and see our restoration projects up close, while away an hour or so chatting away to our very knowledgeable volunteers. We also have a signal box and miniature railway (these are only open on specific dates), museum, a shop and cafe serving delicious homemade meals each day we are in steam. We also offer Cream Teas, High Teas and Sunday Lunches on specific dates which need to be booked in advance as they do sell out very quickly. Our season runs from March to October and then we run our Santa Specials in December.

Lovely trip down memory lane! Our children would have loved going on the steam train but we had escaped from them for the weekend. Had a very nice coffee in the café. All the staff involved all over the station were very friendly.

Very disappointed with this experience, was gifted an afternoon cream tea, which consisted of just two plain scones and cream and jam in a box. The trip wasn’t much either was only half an hour in a very grubby coach (I know it’s an old stream train) but truly wasn’t worth the money.

Brilliant day out. Really brings back the days of steam but without having to commit to it whole day. Option is there for the full day on the rover ticket but easily combined with a visit to Wells the cathedral.

I was given a cream tea experience for my 60th due to the pandemic it was deferred for a couple of year's. We arrived at the sight it very easy to find. We went & collected our ticket's the staff were very friendly & helpful, as we had a bit of time to spare we went to have a look in the signal box the gentleman there was very helpful showed us around & explained in great detail how the box would work in normal circumstances. We then boarded the train at 12.30 & proceeded to Mendip vale where you could get off & walk back or stay on the train as the path was partially blocked we decided to take the return working it was a very comfortable trip. We were able to look around the engine shed's & the rolling stock in various states of refurbishment the staff were all very knowledgeable & explained what was going on. We then went & got our cream tea's the scones were very tasty we also had 2 pieces of cake to take home again the staff where very pleasant & attentive, All in all it was a very pleasing experience well worth the money.
