Very impressive. You require a permit to drive on the road to it then its an easy 20 minutes walk to the falls. You cannot swim here, the rapids and currents are very strong. It is definitely worth going to see. You can hike from...More

Great experience you have to get a permit from the Kawerau i sight to get access. One of the most spectacular water falls I’ve ever seen. Well recommended.

Quite a long drive/out of the way, gravel roads pretty much the whole way. Short track to get to the waterfall, pretty easy. Waterfall lookout was great, a lot harder getting down to water level though. Definitely a must do if you have time for...More

A quick, easy 20min stroll from the car park and just W O W!!!! How unbelievably beautiful is this waterfall!!!! Simply stunning. Make sure to go when there’s been a lot of rain, makes it even more spectacular

We made it a day trip from Tauranga - drove via the expressway, then along the coast until turning right at Matata, towards Kawerau. It was super quick to get the $5 permit to be on the private roads, from the Information Centre in Kawerau....More

Went to Tarawera falls and was really impressed. They appear from a hole in the rock and the volume of water coming down is incredible. Need a permit from the information centre at kawerau.

We were staying in Rotorua and planned on visiting Tarawera Falls by driving around to Kawerau and picking up a permit as others have mentioned. However, the owner of our motel told us you could take the water taxi to Tarawera outlet/campground and hike to...More

The falls are not gigantic. They have a pretty scenic background. You cannot play at the falls but you can play at the rivers after the falls. The hike in was 30mins and easy.
