- Scott BWantagh, New York698 contributionsExcellent Crater Lake, Long Hike, Worth the TimeWe took a private taxi and paid the driver to wait, rather than taking the bus. Upon arriving, there were guides meeting the car and getting you to the proper group. We were told that they were not allowing private individuals to hike up the volcano without a guide any longer, but it sounded like an excuse to be paid for the tour. Regardless, the guide was not too costly. You first have to hike from the road to the park entrance, but there is a road which will take you to that entrance if your driver knows where to go. At the park entrance there is a (dirty) bathroom (bring some toilet paper too), and an office were the park fee is collected. The hike up the volcano takes 2.5 hours roughly depending on your pace. There are a few overlook towers/platforms along the way to view nearby volcanoes and get pics. The rest of the hike is long, dusty and not to strenuous. You need to pack a couple of bottles of water per person to keep hydrated. (There are bushes full of little edible tasteless berries along most of the hike.) If you go early enough there are one or two vendors at the top of the volcano who are selling fruit popsicles and ice cream of various types for a very reasonable price for all their work to carry it to the top. The pictures of the lake at the top are spectacular, with it's emerald green color acid water. (No you can't go in to the crater, and must stay on the rim.) We went during the busiest week (Xmas to New Years) and it was very full of people along the route and at the top (including a group of scouts from across many central American countries.) Try to plan for a day where the clouds are minimal, although the hike will be warmer at least you can see the lake at the top. Our day had clouds roll in, but we still had breaks in them to see the sun hitting the lake.Visited December 2023Travelled with familyWritten 17 April 2024
- rosey1312New York City, New York42 contributionsSteep hike well worth itMake sure to arrive early as the last group tour leaves at 9am. We were lucky that there was a guide available for a private tour when we arrived at 10:30 am. The tour started at 11:15am so it was a rush to climb up before the volcano area closed. - Ann C38 contributionsCome better prepared than we were! Our day trip to the Santa Ana volcano was an entire adventure all in itself. From our location in Playa El Tunco, it was a 2 hour drive to the volcano. Once there, we opted for paying the $35 for the private guide who accompanies your group all the way to the summit and back down. Per usual, me and my kids were woefully under prepared for the challenges ahead, but pressed on regardless. 😅 One of my children was in flip-flops, the other two in crocs. But somehow we managed to summit the almost 8000ft volcano to view the amazing Caldera lake located inside. Trip up the volcano took about 2+ hours, the trip down a little less than. We were largely unprepared for the amount of physical exertion it would take, as well as the intense sun with which we would have to contend. Strongly recommend hats for everyone in your party, sunscreen is a must. Definitely don’t pass up any walking sticks you might come across before you begin the summit. If you’re looking for a cardio workout that lasts over two hours, this hike is for you!Visited June 2024Travelled with familyWritten 30 June 2024

- Seung ChaeNew York City, New York3 contributionsJust Go. You will be rewarded.Best day of our 1 week trip to El Salvador. Just go. Highly recommended, relatively “easy” hike. I started from Lake Coatepeque and it took about 1.5 hours to reach Cerro Verde trailhead. We paid for a private tour $35. The hike took ~2 hours up with a 10 year old on tow. Hike down took 1.5 hours due to the rocky area on top. Total time ~4 hours (~20K steps) including 30 minutes at the summit taking pictures and having a popsicle. I went back down to Lake Coatepeque just in time for lunch, followed by a plunge in the lake.Visited July 2024Travelled with familyWritten 7 July 2024
- דביר ב1 contributionNo pay for guideNice view, There are people at the entrance to the volcano park who tell you that you need a guide to enter, which is not true, they just want to take a few more dollars from you and do nothing. The route is very well marked and you don't need a guide. Very easy route. Stand up for yourself and don't pay the guide.Visited August 2024Travelled soloWritten 13 August 2024
- AzaleaVancouver, Canada16 contributionsOne of the best hikes everI've been on countless hikes, from challenging treks to leisurely strolls. But this one was unlike any other. It humbled me and deepened my appreciation for nature and life. It wasn't just about reaching the summit or capturing breathtaking views of the volcano. It taught me to be present in the moment and find solace in the embrace of nature.Visited September 2024Travelled soloWritten 24 September 2024

Awesome Experience. The highlight of my visit to El Salvador. With the help of my hotel, I found a last minute tour with Centro America Tours. My tour guide Benjamin was great. Within 90 minutes from San Salvador, we were up in the Cerro Verde National Park. We parked near the El Tibet It was a bit confusing as it was my understanding that the only way to hike the volcano was part of a group with an armed escort leaving at 11am. However there was no one around when we arrived at 1030am and it sounded like the group may have already left at 9am that morning. My tour guide directed me to a local guide waiting in the parking area who offered to take me to the top for $25. We walked a short distance before coming to the ticket counter where I had to pay an additional entrance fee of $6. Again it was all a bit mysterious as it looked like this was the location from where groups left and it seemed that you could even make the climb up to the top by yourself. I suspect I may have paid more than I had to but it turned out to be a great experience. My guide Herzon was terrific and spoke pretty good English. As we made the ascent, he told me a lot about the volcano and the surrounding area. Plus it was nice to have a hiking companion as I was traveling solo. Beautiful views of the surrounding landscape and the adjacent Izalco Volcano as we make the moderately strenuous 2 mile ascent to the top. Weather turned out great. Heavy rain in the forecast which made me nearly cancel my plans but it stayed clear the entire time and it wasn't too hot. Actually somewhat cool at the top. Lesson is don't trust the weather forecast as it can change quickly here. Arriving at the top was absolutely spectacular with views of the lake in the crater and the sight and smell of sulfa emanating from the volcano. About a 100 or so people at the rim of the volcano so I assume this was maybe the large group which left earlier? We kept a moderate pace and made the 4 mile round trip up and back in 2 1/2 hrs. Only spent about 15 min at the top.

This is the crater lake within the Santa Ana Volcano in El Salvador, over 7,800 feet in altitude, and the country's highest volcano. A hike to this crater would take close to 2 hours and can be done only with a guide and two armed escort personnel, but is not as strenuous as climbing the nearby Izalco Volcano, which is much steeper.
We started the hike but after 45 minutes decided against it and turned around, instead tasking the reconnaissance on to my trusted dronie. Unfortunately, though, its battery ran out and I couldn't take as many shots as I'd have liked to.

Santa Ana Volcano is a hike not to be missed. It provides a decent workout in a beautiful and diverse setting. Most people with average physical ability will complete this hike to the rim and enjoy a spectacular visual treat of the fluorescent green crater lake. There is something otherworldly when hearing the thermal vents way down below along the shore of the lake.
On a Friday, we arrived in time for the group hike from the Santa Ana Trailhead that starts at 9:30. Our guide told us we did not need to pay because of our age. We later learned that only nationals who are seniors should get in for free. You should expect as a foreigner to pay six dollars entrance fee. Everyone must pay three dollars for the guides. No one charged us a fee to park in the shaded lot at the Santa Ana trailhead.
The guides provided a detailed orientation in Spanish, and then walked us up to the gate entrance from the parking lot. At the entrance, there are clean bathrooms, and a kiosk where you can purchase drinks and snacks. If you are lucky, you might find a walkingstick waiting for you to use. Some hikers will find a stick helpful when navigating up and down the steeper portions of the trail.
Because this was a guided hike with a large group, we experienced a very happy social walk up the hill. If you prefer more serenity and privacy, arrange for a private guide to take you up to the rim (advertised cost was $25).
All the guides were friendly and outgoing, much like almost all El Salvadorians we have met. It was a novel experience for us to be way up a volcano and consuming a frozen chocolate covered banana! Only two dollars for a banana on a stick—refreshing and delicious. I look forward to my next trek up Santa Ana.
Perhaps, like me, you will be enticed to also hike Vulcan Izalco, which leads from a different trailhead atop Cerro Verde.

This is a nice hike (3 hours both ways) take lots of water - it is hot. The top‘main view point’ is very crowded but if you head further to the left you still get a good alternative view of the crater lake minus the selfie sticks.
There is no shade at the top , so aim for an early start to avoid the midday heat. Worth a trip but if you are a good fit hiker, go private rather than in a group.

5/5! Beautiful experience! The hike can be difficult for elders and those with health conditions that cause them to tire, if you're healthy and enjoy a challenge you'll be able to do it. It's so worth it. An hour and a half up and an hour or so down depending on the group it may be less.
Enter through la Casa de Cristal, there you pay a parking and entrance fee. It's $1.75 parking and the same to enter the area. The Casa de Cristal area is a really pretty nature area perfect for a picnic but I don't know much about that.
Anyways, there a guide will ask if you want a private tour or a group tour, private was 35 but it's 3 dollars if you're part of the group. You have to go with a guide they won't let you go alone. I recommend doing the group. Btw this does not include the fee to enter the volcano hike. You'll go with the guide up to the area where you enter the hike up, there's park officers there and it's 6 dollars for foreigners and 3 for nationals.
All this to say... Do it! It's worth it! I would do it again and again

The hike up Santa Ana is really worth your time, and probably our favorite thing we did in our 4 days in El Salvador. It's a good hike that take s a bit of stamina, but nothing outrageous. Your strenuous hike is rewarded with a spectacular view of the green caldera lake, complete with sound effects of steam. hissing from vents around it.
There are options in between taking the very cheap, but very slow and early local bus and paying $80 pp for a standard group tour. Uber was available from Santa Ana, and it showed about $20 one-way. We opted for a driver arranged through our hostel, which was $20 pp. He got us there in less than half the time of the bus, and then stopped at a spot on Lake Coatepeque for lunch. Having a driver was nice in that we didn't have to worry so much about getting back for the 1:00 bus. It isn't a big deal, really, but we were a little more comfortable lingering at the summit longer since we didn't have to worry about the deadline.

Easy trekking, nice view. Remember tô pay what is due at the ticket counter and tip the guide at the end or if not possible pay what local people pay. Personally I was asked to pay 4 usd but I didn't because asking a tip in advance looked strange to me, só I waited the group talk and I v found out the tip was 2 usd ,and thats it. BTW, the guide only want yr money, she didn't take care of the group and she let me Wander alone in dangerous areas(it was written to don't do that),and when I climb down alone she didn't noticed me!in other words, they r not professional guides. My opinion. Cheers

What you really need to know before you go, especially if you are going up on your own and joining the tour up there. The tour leaves the Cerro Verde park at 9am, there is no longer an 11am tour. Ourselves and many other tourists were up there for a tour at 11am because that's what the internet says....
You can climb the Santa Ana volcano at 9 and the Izalco volcano at 11.

If coming from San Salvador, is it best to just book with a tour comp for this hike? I assume in addition to transport they would also be your guided tour on the way up and would include all the park fees?

So anyone can drive themselves to the park entrance and then wait to join the main group to hike up Santa Ana which leaves around 11am? I'm planning to rent a car while I'm in El Salvador but I hadn't seen many posts from people driving themselves to make this hike, only taking buses from the town of Santa Ana.

Yes! We drove ourselves. I would get there around 10:45. I do hear the bus is cheap, but driving was no problem.

hey guys! how much was it in total for the tour? and where did you go to start the trip at 11:am?

Sorry for the delay in responding... $3.00 person in the car to drive in the gate, $1.00 at same entrance to park. In the parking lot we got the overview of the hike from the tourist police of which the Maine theme was: it's challenging and bring water . Then we each gave our donation to the tour guide who, along with the tourist police will accompany us and answer questions. Then we turned around, got back in car, parked at El Tibet hotel (paid $2 to park there). El Tibet is down the hill from Cerro Verde Park and near the entrance to the hike starting point. Then we hiked from there up to the top of the crater. It was a fast hike and would be hard with children under 12. Turns out we SHOULD then have also paid just to enter the trail (there is a little cabana and bathroom at the trail head), but no one was working that day to take money. I think that would have been $3-6 per person ... All told, for non- Salvadoran person: about 10-12 bucks.

Hello, Can someone recommend a nice hotel near the park? I will be there for only a night and my backpacking days are over.... and so prefer something clean, quiet and comfortable (ok if it is a bit on the pricey side). I speak fluent Spanish and so language is not a problem. Thank you!
