i visited the Red Sand Beach for the first time this summer (2016) and i can say that it was fantastic! The Beach is not the main Beach of Matala and it is reachable from a path in Matala or by boat. This makes this beach not to be so crouded and very clean. If you want to a romantic... More

Just worth the walk up to the top of the trail for the view of Matala, caves and water. Even if you have no intention of going down to the beach take the walk.

Near the Massara plain, the region of Matala is this nice red beach; the big rocks are red, and it's difficult to reach this beach; you must have good shoes and many time. the beach is very long and one of the nicest in Crete.

The beach is much calmer than the beaches on the west side of Matala. The walk to the beach is strenous, use good shoes. You can be on the beach nude or with swimming suits as you choose. A very relaxed feeling. The water is crystal clear.

It's a steep 30 minute walk from Matala to Red beach, making this quieter than the main beach. It's for nudists and goats only!! There is a beach bar, but I didn't use it so don't know what they serve or charge.

What a lovely beach and we enjoyed the walk there and back each day. Route from Matala town centre to beach is more gentle than route from edge of town by hotel zafiria. Jannis's mojito bar on the beach is great. There was a man providing boat transfers to beach from Matala and back. Well worth a visit.

We visited this beach on our holiday with our almost 2 year old. It was a pretty gruelling trip to get to the beach, after parking the car we started off through the town and made our way up the slope (& steps) wasn't long before it turned into a rocky steep slope - we had to carry our boy... So, when you visit Matala it seems you just have to go to red beach... so my wife and I did ! Seems we took the "easy" roaad that leaves from the village. It was a decent walk and climb, but we did it within 30 minutes. Once we arrived at Red Beach it wasn't nearly as impressive as reviewers... More

Red Beach is my favourite beach in the world, so far. I last visited 7 years ago and knew I had to get back there. My husband, daughter and I trekked to the beach three times last month and loved each visit. The waves depend on the day, two visits the water was calm and easy to float in and... More

Fantastic small beach. Quite a hike to get there, but your efforts will show worthwhile! Have a Mojito at Jannis bar: the best in Crete!!! Do not go at midday; preferably early morning or late afternoon: unless you would love a heatstroke?
