Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

A number of reviewers have mentioned that there is not much to do here expect relax, enjoy the many restaurants and fishing port and then go. Not true, for us. What they don't mention, and we didn't know until we arrived, was that 20 mins walk away (inland!) are the remains of a port built in the 2nd C AD by Claudius and then modified by Trajan. It was buried in silt as the river did its job over hundreds of years, then abandoned. Excavations took place last century and now, in what is now a lovely rustic environment but used to be the waterfront, you can spend quite a few hours following a well marked and documented track exploring this massive bit of ruined infrastructure.

Not quite walking distance (maybe) is Ostia Antica - very well documented elsewhere as an alternative to Pompeii without the travel time, although it does not have the drama of Pompeii.

This is all meant to say that if you are staying in Porto di Traiano or Porto di Claudio there is a lot to look at besides a number of fishing boats and restaurants. We found it a perfect place to stay for two days before contemplating a long plane ride home to Australia. Quiet, well provisioned and fascinating.

We were able to book a visit on one of the few days it is open each month. There is a good map to carry that shows all the paths, and the signage is good along the way. The ancient storehouses are clearly visible, as are the old canals that connected the hexagonal basin to the sea and the Tiber. There are also the ruins of a very early Christian basilica. The basin itself can only be viewed from the top of a range of storehouses and through a fence, because the basin is still on private property.

Beautiful little sea town with a pretty port. There is a castle nearby to take a peak at. Plenty of restaurants, pizza places, and outdoor seating. It's clean, pretty, great photo opps and a place to just stroll, hang out, eat lunch, take some photos and enjoy vacation or a day with the family.

It if more pleasant to stay here instead of the airport. Lots of nice restaurants and cafes, and nice port to watch the trawlers come and go and relax by the Tiber in the sun.

Beats staying at the airport.

The peir is across the street from the Hotel Tiber, and enhances a stay at that hotel. You can see the pier ffrom many rooms at the hotel, and you can walk along the pier for exercise. At about 3:30 the fishing boats start to arrive at the pier to off-load their catch of the day. The locals line up and buy fresh fish, carrying thier purchases home in plastic bags. It remains busy for about 2 hours as shio after ship arrives with their catch. We watched several cats hep themselves to a purloined small fish, darting away when noticed by the ship's crew. Some of the fish were still gasping for their last breath, so fresh was the catch. B about 5 pm all of the ships have off loaded their catch, and the locals disappear from the pier pier. About 5 in the morning we saw several men fishing from the pier.

This 2000+ year old port is truly Amazing. Much of the structural integrity exists. Built about 20 minutes from the airport makes for easy access to spend a few hours. Highly recommended. Many fishing boats and photography opportunities abound.

If you're coming off a plane into Fiumicino, a walk along the port -- a couple hours after you land -- is a great way to begin your stay in Italy. Watch the boats come in with their catch, fisherman repairing their nets, the long fishing poles along the pier. And dozens of restaurants from which to choose. Great way to begin a morning, end the day, or begin a trip.

We enjoyed an evening stroll along the river, and also lunch at the beach the next day. Wonderful colorful place to watch people fishing from shore, and to see commercial fishing boats arriving with their catch. The best part is eating, as the riverfront is lined with fresh seafood restaurants. Also you can cross a bridge to the beach area, which is lined with beach restaurants that also rent lounge chairs and umbrella - free if you order enough food. Walking past a harbor full of amazing sailboats was fun also. Needless to say we love fishing, sailing and great seafood.

This is a busy commercial port. The river was lined with fishing boats in the evening, but they were gone in the morning.

These are a number of seafood restaurants in the area, which makes it a nice place to begin or end your visit to Rome.
