About

A truly beautiful experience that brings you back 100 years when the tuna business was the main activity of the island. Guided tours are still not on and only thanks to Piera, who is a local guide there and run the extra mile spending time to explain us the full story of the family and how the different parts of the Tonnara worked, that we could fully appreciate the experience. It would have not been the same thing without her, especially for our children.
Honestly a must see if you happen to be between Trapani and Marsala as this business shaped the local economy for so many years.

This is a meticulously restored tuna factor which belonged to the infamous Florio family. The exhibits include a film made in the 1930s of the tuna canning process from end to end. The most important part of the island's economy at the time. It is also a beautifully architected building!

You need to book a tour, and try to do it the day before, because this is a very popular place to visit. There are visits in Italian and English, and they are held by former factory workers, very passionate about their jobs/lives. The factory has been renovated for the purpose of the visits, and contains very nice exhibits. A must!!!

As this impressive building is overlooking the beach, we were curious and keen to visit it, but it was always closed. We found out by accident that it was open for free guided tours on Wednesdays, so we jumped at the chance.

The guided visit was in Italian, which I understand about 50%, but even if you didn't understand a word, it would be worth going along as you get to see inside this fascinating place.

One of the tour guides is a guy who worked in the tuna factory since the 1960s - he got a lot of laughs from the Italians on the tour (everyone except us), but I understood the other guide better when she spoke.

The guides took us around the old tuna processing plant, viewing the giant tuna cooking pots, tinning tables, tuna hanging posts, etc. There are several tuna fishing boats moored in the buildings, plus a miniature model of the 'mattanza' nets.

The building also houses a collection of ancient ceramics and artefacts from Roman, Phoenecian and other eras.

If you can manage to find details of this place before you go, bring them with you so you understand what you are viewing. But even if you don't understand a word of Italian, this place is worth a visit, it's beautifully maintained and an integral part of the economic and folk history of the Egadi Islands and Sicily.

SImply put, this is not to miss. Aside from a great beach or two, this was the highlight of the visit. History, emotion, human interest...it had it all. The staff is fantastic, engaging and well-informed. They brought history to life. Further, something like this, FREE, is unheard of today. Complimenti!

We arrived at the museum - door was closed/locked with hand written sign , saying that it was open from 10am to 12 noon daily and 'Do not ring the bell'. It was 10.20 on a Monday morning when we got there, we decided it must be closed for the day. We were leaving when 3 other visitors strode up and rang the bell. We were allowed in to the entrance area, there were 20 or so people in the entrance courtyard. Myself and my wife were approached and coralled by an old man who appeared to work at the museum. He spoke to us in a raised voice while gesticulating wildly. the thrust of his efforts indicated that we were to leave immediately. He shooed us back out onto the street. We had no idea what was going on - he was extremely rude and forceful. We were very embarrassed. A woman who worked at the museum tried to itervene on our behalf, which only angered the old man further. She told us to stay but the man was protesting loudly that we must go. We left. We have guessed that there was a guided tour - but we have nothing to back this up. It was handled deplorably and could very easily have ended up getting a little physical - not the kind of cultural experience you would expect when visiting a museum! We did inform our hotel of what had happened as we had checked with them before we went to the museum - they did not seem too surprised - I suppose this speaks for itself.

I was in Favignana for six days for a summer school/workshop that took place in this old tuna factory which has been well kept. The hall we used for the lectures has been restored and is well suited for conferences, seminars etc. It is centrally air conditioned and the audio system is excellent!
From the building to the materials and the well told stories, one can almost still feel the presence of the fishermen and workers of the factory. I was particularly impressed with the audiovisual materials available at the museum: they are very well presented and preserved.
Another plus is that this old factory is next to a lovely beach and a stone's throw away from the city center.

A place you must visit, especially if you are at Favignana, since this place is simply the climax of the island. The tour is very interesting and also interactive at times. Entrance is free, even for the tour. Just go, and you can be assured that you would not regret it!!

We’d been looking the the Stabilimento for a couple of evenings before we visited. Very informative about the history of the way that Tuna has traditionally been caught and processed.

Good guided tour of the ex tuna factory of favignana. The place is extremely fascinating, and they also host some Romans remains. I hope they will restore the entire building. The tour was in Italian, I don’t know if they do some in English.
