We had a tour booked for Verdun and decided to do a detour to see this cemetery. We are so glad we did. There was no one else around so we just walked up and down for an hour or so.
It was totally silent and the whole place is immaculately presented with no litter whatsoever.

My spouse and I have travelled over the past 15 years to Europe with other tour guide services and although their services were very satisfactory, our interest was to request a private and professional tour guide with genealogy expertise in the Alsace-Lorraine region of France to visit my family's roots and tour of military interests. As background, I am a retired U.S. Army Veteran interested in our American WW I & II military treasures scattered throughout the Alsace-Lorraine region of France.
My request through ToursByLocals.com provided for a 4-Day Private Tour service that included transportation and much appreciated language skills. As a follow up, we were referred to Tour-Guide Pieter Smits and spouse Terry Smits Moren who were exceptional with coordinating in advance details of our visit. This was the beginning of a relationship that provided knowledge of our family's roots in the Alsace area, as well as, locating World War I & II cemeteries and monuments in Lorraine-France area. What was most outstanding was their patience with unforeseen circumstances that arose with researching various genealogy details; and tour of the most significant WW I battle field sites in the Meuse-Argonne region near Verdun and WW II battle sites near Metz and Hagenau, France.
In good faith, this recommendation is provided to others who have similar interests and request the services and benefits of a professional tour-guide with first-hand knowledge and unique experience, so to realize the same benefits of this region of France, as we have...

This is an awesome reminder of how very many lives were lost in the Great War. World War 1 doesn't get the PR that WW2 has, and since very few people remember their great grandparents (and basically no one can go as far back as great great grandparents!) most of those buried here are little more than names. Visiting the memorial and reading some of the names gives them life, even for a moment....and realizing that all these thousands died fighting oppression is a sobering reminder of the price of freedom.

The Meuse-Argonne American Cemetery, the largest American military cemetery in Europe, is indeed a sacred place. WWI American doughboys who fought in the Meuse-Argonne campaign area have their final resting place here, along with the many thousands of missing whose names are inscribed along the wall of the chapel. The cemetery is beautifully maintained thanks to the hard work of the American Battle Monuments Commission. Note that you can download guides to all ABMC locations from their website (ABMC.gov) which will help inform you on your visit.
As you pass row upon row of the fallen, take a moment to read the names, rank, and division of the soldier. You will find buglers, pilots, and officers alongside simple privates. The number of fallen is staggering and sobering.
The chapel is especially beautiful and an important area for contemplation. The cemetery required the inclusion of maps describing the actions of the different divisions during the campaign, engraved into the living stone. One should spend at least two hours at the cemetery, and be sure to visit the guest house to record your thoughts and look down upon the beautiful, and tragic, scene.
[Note that this is not a WW2 cemetery that has confused other reviewers. There are many military cemeteries in France, and the ABMC website can make your trip better informed.]

Don't skip the visitors center where there is an interesting exhibit on the history of the cemetery and some of its "inhabitants".

The Google maps link is to another cemetery located S of Verdun. (there are quite a few American Cemeteries)
Very humbling experience, and I thought it very important for my kids to learn about this.

When you see so many crosses you have a strange feeling and when you start reading the names in those crosses you are invaded by inspiring abs sad thoughts at same time.

I visited this cemetery twice this week for about two hours each time. It is simply too large to see everything in a single day. I am impressed that there are so many Medal of Honor and Distinguished Service Cross holders buried here. For those who want more information about these in individuals with high awards a Google search will turn up plenty of details and photos. Be sure to carry water if you are out on a hot day.

We arrived after the visitors center closed but you can enter the cemetery any time.
It was a fitting day, cloudy with a light drizzle. As we pulled in it was so big but quite. We knew the plot we were looking for. As I looked at the graves, so many and most under the age of 25.
You walk thru and look at the names, states and ages. It covers over 140 acres, 14,246 with 954 names of the missing. Rows and rows of white crosses.
These men were so far away from home and their families. They are surrounded by their fallen brothers.
Allow time to walk quietly, read their names and honor them. It is worth the drive. Plan ahead because it is off the main path and takes a while to get their. The visitors center closes at 1700 so make plans to allow 2-3 hours of cemetery and visitors center time.

One of the largest American cemeteries in Europe. The road bisects and the cemetery so impossible to miss. Beautifully laid out and maintained. It is large and takes time to walk across. Brits remember the Somme, the Americans Verdun. One million soldiers of whom 12% were casualties. Terrible but never forgotten.

I have a great uncle buried here and would love to visit. Is it a trip that is possible from Paris?

Kleine historische Anmerkung. An der Schlacht um Verdun (Februar bis Dezember 1916) waren keine Amerikaner beteiligt.
Erst im Rahmen der französisch-amerikanischen Maas-Argonnen-Offensive ab 26. September 1918 haben Amerikaner in dieser Gegend gekämpft!
