A most imposing building dating back for centuries. It ias one of the biggest churches in the UK. Walls are festooned with history, see if you can locate the link with the first Americas, need to look up for this one. Go on a Monday and experiance the busy market at the gates especially on a bank holiday Monday when... More

An interesting Abbey to visit. The history was very interesting and we were amazed to see how old some of the stained glass windows were. Had coffee in the shop to warm up

Decided to visit here as it's local and free. What a good choice. Really interesting place and lots of things to see - the squint, the jesse window, the masonry carvings to name but a few. Really worthwhile place to walk round - grabbed a quick cuppa in the small tea shop which was ok. Highly recommended attraction.

We visited the Abby when the Christmas lights were being switched on and I can honestly say I wasn't expecting to see how beautiful it was inside. I would recommend anyone to visit this pretty Abby and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere.

We visited the Abbey for the Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols yesterday evening. The singing by the choir and the chorister was exquisite, as was the playing by the organist. The congregation were all given candles which were lit at the start of the service, and most of us managed to keep them going until the end so it... More

Selby Abbey is one of those places that can easily be overlooked or forgotten - but it most definitely should not be. It is an absolutely beautiful Abbey Church, an architectural gem. Large parts date back to Norman times with later Gothic additions. The mouldings around the main doorway are exceptional. Another interesting feature is the Leper's Squint, an opening... More

I could be biased as my parents and grandparents were married in this magnificent building. 1069 was the year they started building and so in 2019 it will celebrate it's 950th anniversary. It you like church buildings this will knock you out and the staff/clergy are so friendly and helpful. And yes, there is the "Washington" window.

A large church which dominates the centre of the town. Such a lot to see within it. Magnificent architecture, interesting stained glass, fine monuments and furnishings. It also has a lived in and used feeling, helped by the small cafe set up in one of the transepts. When we were there it was good to see clergy taking parties of... More
