Selby Abbey is a lovely building, and one sadly missed by many who don’t venture into the town when travelling in the area. Though the bypass reduces a lot of congestion, people are missing a treat with the Abbey with its architecture, and peaceful innards.

An unbelievably beautiful Norman Abbey, vast in scale as many Cathedrals. Burnt out in the 19th century but stunningly restored by Gilbert Scott. Over latter years, a skilled and influential development trust has raised millions to restore and consolidate fabric which had been at risk...More

Selby's Abbey somehow manages to remain hidden from the general public, which is difficult conserving the size of the building. It's a real treasure, almost a hidden gem, with windows from the 14th century, treasures equally as old and an interior that is breathtaking.

Well maintained, lots of information panels about different parts of the abbey, easy to spend a couple of hours here.

Selby Abbey is without doubt the unrecognised jewel in the crown of the small market town of Selby. A visit to the top of the central tower is a MUST but can be somewhat strenuous. Celebrating it’s 950th anniversary in 2019. Highly recommended.
