About
Built in 1325 Samlesbury Hall is steeped in fascinating history, retaining its original typical black and white exterior, the Hall is almost equidistant between Blackburn and Preston, yet retaining a rural feel. Saved from demolition in the 1920’s by six local businessmen, it remains in the Charitable Trust today with the aim of maintaining and keeping open for the visitors to enjoy. With the turbulent history of catholic families, the haunting of Lady Dorothy Southworth (and others), a captivating insight into life from the early 14th to the early 20th Century is all waiting to be discovered. Samlesbury Hall also offers the very best of Lancashire, with exhibitions from local artists, antiques and collectibles and a gift shop, which sells high quality Lancashire produce. The extensive grounds are delightful. The gardens also feed the kitchen and the lovely Heritage Café. Samlesbury Hall is open to visitors all year round and promises something for all the family.

- LeslovesfoodHazel Grove, United Kingdom208 contributionsNever ever want to experience this again40 people on a booked tour with Xmas meal. Arrived 10.30 time for a coffee. Coach arrived 40 people only one member of staff in cafe. Quite a few people missed the start of the tour because of the lack of servers. Eventually a second member arrived to help. The tour had already started when I got there. I sat near the roaring fire and to be honest couldn't even feel it as it was so cold. All the heat went up the chimney. Outside temperature was below zero inside temperature wasn't much better. As far as I understood the heating had broken but little was done to warm the room. The talk was excellent a quick walk round the house and back for lunch in anorak scarf and gloves. Have you ever tried holding your knife and fork with thick gloves on. The meal....my pie was lovely, the sea bass was cold as were many of the meals. Served on cold plates in cold temperatures so hardly surprising. Bearing in mind the party were all seniors some of them were unable to walk all the way to the cafe and back so had not had a hot drink from 9.30. No hot drinks were offered in fact the staff totally disappeared once the food was served. Bearing in mind the heating wasn't on and we had just had a meal in the cold the least the venue could have done was offered hot tea and coffee. All in all I would not want to repeat it.We are sorry you’ve put this on TripAdvisor. Your party arrived 40 minutes early and didn’t notify anyone. You then split up and half of you went into the café which does only have one member of staff on at that time in the morning because we are very quiet, particularly in the winter months, in these difficult times, we really can’t afford to have a member of staff on just in case, a little forewarning with enabled us to get someone to help you. The tour guide arrived before 11 to meet and greet you. She even went up to the café to ask some of your party to come down before she started the tour. So all were aware that the tour was about to start. The heating for the main rooms was not operating properly. However, were you were eating you had two air source heat pumps blowing down warm heat and you had a great hall fire lit, which is 6 foot wide and 3 foot deep. It also has a fan that allows the warmth to go into the room. Both producing good heat in a 700-year-old room. You did complain via email asking for money back but then you said the meal was delicious all of it, but the plates were lukewarm. No mention of anything being cold. We hope this clarifies matters for you. - Paul H2 contributionsShepherd's Huts ExperienceWe knew from the website that this would be quirky, and it did not disappoint. Salmesbury Hall is lovely, and we stayed in one of the Shepherd's Huts. They are basic and tiny, but they are meant to be so that's not a complaint. Probably best experienced in spring or summer when you can sit outside. We had a great time. No evening dining facilities on site, but they help with recommendations for local restaurants, which are close by and really good. Some internal fitments were a little flaky, but that all adds to the experience. A walk round the gardens and the Hall is a joy.Thank you so very much for your lovely review, we will get the team to have a look at the fitment and see if we can improve for the next time you visit. We hope you manage to have breakfast and lunch in the café they are quite lovely We hope to see you soonWritten 16 May 2023This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited May 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 13 May 2023
- vintinsSheffield, United Kingdom15 contributionsFirst time glampingWe spent a quirky weekend in a shepherds hut. The hut was clean and the beds fairly comfortable. We were blessed with good weather so able to eat outside with a bq. There was no crockery or cutlery in the hut but the reception happily supplied them on request. I wish we had taken some cups and glasses the enamel mugs supplied for drinking out of are not very good. Our granddaughter was disappointed she couldn't have an ice cream and in fact was told to move away from the reception area as there was a wedding.Visited May 2023Travelled with familyWritten 22 May 2023
- Janet EAnnan, United Kingdom2 contributionsLovely stay in super cute huts!We love the shepherds hut and the arrangement of the groups (we came with 2 families and our area felt private and safe) was lovely. We especially loved the wild meadow planting - saw loads of butterflies! Huts were clean and comfortable. We were a little disappointed in the wafflery - service was very very slow (1 waffle at a time served for our group of 8) and nearly half the menu items were unavailable. The heritage cafe tried the following day was brilliant. We would come again but bring more of our own stuff. Also an extra blanket or two in the huts would be great for evenings sitting out by the fire pit.Visited May 2023Travelled with familyWritten 4 June 2023
- Leon J4 contributionsStay was okWe went for the Divored, behead, died event. The guy who was Henry 8th was fantastic. However, we had pizza and whilst it tasted nice, it tiny compared to the box it came in. I suggest either smaller boxes or bigger pizzas, especially for the £15 charged. We also stayed in the accommodation and it was clean but missing a few things, no milk for the tea/coffee and there were 3 of us, but only towels for 2. We did feed this back in the morning, but maybe having a checklist would have prevented these errorsHi Leon. Thank you for taking the time to leave your review and we'll certainly take those points into consideration. I'm glad to see that you enjoyed the event.Written 19 June 2023This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited June 2023Travelled with familyWritten 14 June 2023
- Destination61814814 contributionsOverall okThe shepherds huts were nice, beds very comfy. It’s compact but as expected. There was a lack of toilet roll. Overall I feel the price was rather high £130 for one night not including breakfast is expensive. Especially as we were part of a wedding party and there was no discount available. Thanks for your review, we take all of your feedback on board and glad you had a nice stay in our lovely Shepherd's Huts.Written 31 July 2023This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited July 2023Travelled with familyWritten 6 July 2023
- Stuart BBourne, United Kingdom1 contributionGreat accommodation…slow service in the cafeThe shepherd’s hut accommodation was lovely and I cannot fault that. Our experience of the breakfast in the heritage cafe was not so good. We had booked a table for 9.30am to eat and we were seated quickly. Our order for drinks and food was taken 20 minutes later. The drinks took 30 minutes to arrive after this and the food 55 minutes to arrive. We had to chase up the order and we were told that it was because they were busy (people who came in after us were getting their food and drinks). The food, when it did arrive, was very good.Visited July 2023Travelled with familyWritten 11 July 2023
- orchid5961 contributionsExcellent historical heritageInitially went as advertised having a farmers market, disappointed to find this wasn't as advertised and the Hall have asked for this information to be removed , so please don't go expecting a farmers market. However we walked round the grounds and the hamlet with very quirky camping facilities , had a cuppa in one of the cafes and then visited the hall , unfortunately the upstairs wasn't accessible due to work being carried out, it is a grade 1 listed building so to be expected. Howver we were taken back in time by a lovely gentleman called Simon who in an hour retold the history of the hall, excellent narrative. Despite our initial disappointment I can honestly say I throughly enjoyed every minute. Would definitely recommend.Visited July 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 30 July 2023

Hi Claire
That’s strange… when you came to the wedding, did you pass through any of the rooms with roaring log fires? There are four of them. We do also have central heating of course and air source heat pumps for the extra cold days.
Our kitchen, much like all professional kitchens, has a hot cupboard to keep plates extra hot and the standard of food we send out is the same for every guest. All our fabulous brides and grooms this winter period have raved about the food so perhaps you are thinking of a different venue?
We have also had lots of thank yous that personally name our friendly and helpful team.
Your feedback is appreciated but we will continue to offer the same high standard of service that makes our brides and grooms very happy.
Thank you

This we really enjoyed. The staff done everything to accommodate my Autistic son bringing items to the sixteen century lodge for us.They accommodated all Michael's needs. They even allowed us the use of one of the shepherd's huts to make hot chocolate and light a pit fire and toast marshmallows and put them on chocolate biscuits which was a lovely experience for Michael.Lots to do there with the stately house free to enter, the children's play area, the mini golf ⛳, the wafflery and the restaurant. All staff were great and caring. The groups are nice to walk around and you can see some small wild life and birds singing in the trees. The afternoon teas are great and the food is the best also the cakes.

We visited last Teusday Oct 17th with the Voel bus day trip. After we arrived we were told that we were to go around by ourselves. There ws no leaflet given out to us. After we went in we went to see different rooms to see who were the families that had been living there and their history. Unfortunately it was very cold in the rooms, there was no heating on and my hands were very cold. I did try and concentrate on the explanitory boards that were around but was distracted by the radio being on. I went on a day trip not to hear about the war in Israel on the news.
I am a trustee of the local museum in our village and we only have a few volunteers helping especially after Covid. We do have a leaflet, and we also take people around to tell them about the Victorian era and the history of the house and the family that lived there from humble beginnings in a shoe maker’s workshop to become a lecturer of Philosophy. When there is a coach of people coming we also give them a background talk so that everyone is welcomed and know what they are going to see.
Our house has 1589 on one of the beams in the sitting room and I know how important and costly is it’s upkeep.
Then I went to the downstairs cafe to order tea, after 10 minutes waiting and being cold.I went to ask where it was as the bus was leaving in a quarter of an hour. Then I was told that they didn’t have any take away cups for me to take with me. I just asked for a refund. I was so glad to arrive at the garden center to warm up and have hot lunch and tea.

Hello tripper
The coach company you came with with contacted us and we made it clear that the free visit they wanted did not have a tour guide, We offered a guide but the coach company was not prepared to pay, we are not sure what the coach company charged you for the visit.
we are more than happy to supply a guide and heating but this was not requested.
we have many leaflets, we are not sure why you couldn't find them.
that's lovely information about your historic house.
we were very busy that day with the coach party and sadly didn't have time for your order which was placed only fifteen minutes before your departure.

Good for short stays, we had fun in park and with fire pit and BBQ, obviously around house and grounds when open.

Absolutely stunning building inside and out, shepherd's huts were roomy and clean and very cosy. I have to give one downside sorry 2. Firstly the vegetarian option wasnt the best apart from the halloumi which was lovely, the rest bland and heavy, i have to say for the meat eaters they loved everything, especially the round sausages, so that was more important, i dont think they left much. Secondly the evening food, kebabs and chips, we were not aware they had been put out, so when we realised it meant the chips were cold, when we mentioned this we were told " well they have been out 40 minutes " they were taken away and brought back still cold, im not sure if this was a communication breakdown ie dj had he been told to announce it, all in all my daughter and new husband had a day they wished for, so thankyou to all for a fantastic day

We had an amazing time. Loads for my girls to do. Staff very friendly at reception, cafe and wafflery. Nothing was too much trouble.Hut was clean and beautifully presented. Facilities great. Didn't think glamping was for me but have been converted. Have recommended to friends, some of whom have already booked.

Lovely night away. 2 young children loved the play area, fire pit and just spending time in and around shepherd hut and grounds. Lovely breakfast at the herritage cafe, food bot cheap but tasty and freshly prepared and ice cream and waffles at Dotties. Very friendly staff, paid extra £10 to take dog, overall lovely short trip. Will be returning for longer next time. Had take out afternoon tea for kids and partner nipped to subway close by later on in the evening. Paid extra for fire pit, marshmallows and smores, kids really enjoyed this. Linen amd towels provided, hot running water, kids slept well, I found the bed a bit uncomfortable as felt hard bed base underneath, would just take mattress topper or folded up quilt next time wasn't a big deal. Will get the BBQ next time also. Didn't go into hall as only place dog not able to go, grounds and gardens beautifully maintained. Little hook a duck in the courtyard fountain by Dotties was a nice touch also

We stayed at the Shepherds Huts at Samlesbury Hall after our daughters wedding, booking all available huts for one night. The arrangements and communication prior to arrival were very clear. Arrival arrangements for all guests was very smooth and flexible. The huts were very comfortable with excellent showers and facilities to make hot drinks.

This is my ancestral home as well. My ancestors start with Cospatric de Samlesbury b. 1150 and continue to Gilbert de Croft/Southworth b:1192, then to Gilbert de Southworth b: 1306 Lancashire...etc. My great great grandfather was John Gordon Southworth/Murdock. b: 1836. John was the firstborn of Rascius and Lucinda Southworth. Lucinda died about 6 weeks after his birth and Rascius asked Lucinda's broth and wife to raise John. They adopted him and raised him as a Murdock
We will be visiting Samlesbury Hall this September 2023....would love any information on our relatives! Maggie Wynja (Murdock).

Hellooo Rach,
We have a wedding on Saturday so the Hall and grounds are out of bounds...
So on the Friday all is open till 4pm .... we are also open from 10 am on the Sunday and we have free guided tours with witch Janey .... she is hilarious
Of course we are open every day for breakfasts
Also the waffles are amazing ... Maria who makes the waffles has no idea of portion control. The boys will not go hungry!
See you then

Hello ... no we just have a kettle and tea/coffee and milk ....
But we do have power showers/toilets/memory foam mattresses.
You can have a bbq and a fire pit also enjoy a fab breakfast at the hall together with lunch and maybe even some brilliant food at our events. Please check our website for when you can use the Halls facilities
