Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Spike Milligan's was a comic and part of the legendary Goon Show. I did not realise he was buried in the churchyard in Winchelsea until I started looking for things to do in the area.

When you arrive at the church you will quite easily find his grave as it is the one with the well worn path.

It's a nice little tribute to a comic legend.

As a small lad I was fascinated by the simplicity and stupidity of that poem and immediately drawn to its author. And thus begun my love affair with the warped mind of Spike Milligan, a journey that would encompass his poetry, his books ( I still maintain “Hitler, my part in his downfall” is one of the best anti war books ever written) and the madness of the Q TV series.
So being in Winchelsea I just had to look the old boy up and pay my respects and thank him for all the smiles.
His gravestone is fairly easy to find. Stand in front of the main church door and look in the direction of the New Inn pub. In front of you is a dominant tree. Walk towards that and Spike is underneath. As others have mentioned the path from the church to his gravestone is well trodden and should be easy to spot.

Visited as my dad loved Spike and it was a really lovely cemetery. Had some old parts of the church and the grounds were pretty, so may have only been and hours

Always pay a visit to See Spike when in Winchelsea, the grass path is always flattened en-route to his gravestone I'm pleased to say ! We combined our visit with the National Garden Scheme which was on Sat.16th April. Six Gardens were open all very different and nice display of Spring flowers and shrubs.
Our favourite was Number 2. Packed with all kinds of unusual plants, Views from the Patio to die for, and a conservatory full of the largest collection of Orchids I have ever seen !

We've lived near Winchelsea for years and had no idea Spike Milligan was buried in the main graveyard at Winchelsea.
It's easy to find as it's the only grave stone with a worn path to it.
I heard that the wording said "told i was ill" which it does but in the Gaelic language.

Went aong more as a curio, as opposed to being a Fan, but interesting t see where he was laid to rest. Strange how such a comic giant has such a small and humble headstone

Always stop of here when visiting the area and walk across to to see Spikes grave, easy to find as the path across the grass to it is well worn.

The Church of St Thomas the Martyr itself is the centrepiece of Winchelsea and within it you'll find the grave of Spike Milligan. I didn't make the trip especially, I was passing through on a walk from Rye to Hastings. There were several fans visiting and curiosity got the better of me. Glad I made the stop

A must do if in Winchelsea if you found him even the slightest bit funny. He was an immensely clever man like his humour or not. There is a definite dip in the ground caused no doubt by the number of people who have stood and looked at the grave. And as promised the engraving of I told you I was ill but in Celtic as has been said. Humour beyond the end!

It says much for the man and how much he was loved by the British public that, when in the area, people are drawn to visit his grave. Although it is situated in a large churchyard it is easy to find: with your back to the main door of the church and looking towards the white houses and the pub beyond, look for a simple Celtic cross, underneath a nice tree.

This was the first time we had visited Winchelsea and I must say that the village and the church are both beautiful and wonderfully peaceful. Mr Milligan chose his last resting place well. I’m glad we came.
