I have a NZ "tramping" book that describes this track as "a good choice when northwesterly winds are bringing rain to Arthur's Pass" and "more gradual than most of the alpine tracks" near here. So it looked appealing when Avalanche Peak, which we'd planned to...More

This is a good and quite tough walk but the views, from the ridge down 4 different valleys and over to glaciers, are amazing. Well worth the effort as long as it is a clear day.

Bealey Spur is a great out and back day hike. It can be a bit soggy in sections, but the views at the top are amazing! Definitely worth spending a day hiking the trail with a picnic lunch to enjoy with the views!

This is a good introduction to hiking in NZ. It is pretty steep as are most of the bigger hikes in the pass. The top takes 3 hours but you can turn around anytime.

This follows a spur for several kilometres through several types of vegetation, so it offered plenty of variety. This is an easier alternative to the Avalanche Peak trail. It took about 4 hours to return to the carpark, going at a comfortable pace with a...More

We did this walk on a hot day and were very grateful for the shade on much of it. It's a steady climb but not too steep. Underfoot it can be tricky in some places with loose rocks or tree roots. The woodland and bush...More

Stunning views over the valley in all directions. The summit is only 30mins past the hut, well worth the extra bit if you have the energy!
