No trip to the South Island is complete without checking out Mount Cook. Hiking via the Hooker Valley Glacier with a 2.5year old was amazing. The 10km hike return took approximately 4.5 hours with views of the mountain and the glacier- the path/bridges/walkways well maintained...More

And includes the southern alps.. So picturesque.. The majestic peaks capture your attention and will draw you in.. For a more intimate look, be sure to take a hike on one of the many well-maintained and well marked trails.

The DOC had wonderful informative displays done in Museum quality. Staff was also very helpful in suggesting appropriate walks. We spent an hour there looking at the shibits and getting spot on advice on what would be good for us to do.

This is the highest mountain in NZ. Mt Cook looms above you from the park. We camped at the White Horse Hill camp ground and the view in the morning of the mountain was unreal.

Spent an hour here downstairs in the display room and could have spent another hour in a rainy Sunday morning. Fascinating storyboards of the history of the huts, lodges and hikers. Retail shop prices appeared reasonable considering that you're 50k or so from another store.
