My wife, her two sisters, my brother in-law, son and myself climbed the lonesome lake trail to the top where lonesome lake is. Great hike, a little challenging in some areas but a very enjoyable climb. There is a nice campground at the bottom with nice accommodations. At the top of the climb, you join up with the Appalachian trail.... More

If you are in the Franconia Notch area of the White Mts. National Forest, seriously consider stopping in at Lafayette campground and hiking up to Lonesome Lake. It is only 1.5 miles, but it is steep in parts. It is wilderness hiking, but the views from the hut, and the edge of the lake are priceless. The caretaker at the... More

This was so perfect. The hike up to the lake, prime time tourist season, August, morning till evening...and we only saw maybe 3 other couples once you got off the main trail. The lake is beautiful, it's so quiet and the hike isn't very challenging but it's one that you still need to pay attention where you're going. I had... More

Beautiful but quite steep. Once you climb over lots of boulders and dodge tree roots the end result is in sight. Walk around the lake is quite flat and the Hut is a great place to grab a snack. It took us close to 2 hours going up. Half hour coming down.

I would give this hike a 7 out of 10 for difficulty mostly because of the amount of large rocks, stretches of steeper grade, and the multiple tricky stream crossings. Took us about 2 hours (3.1 mi) to get to the top with a group of 6 navigating their way up. The lake is gorgeous!! The Hut at the top... More

Looking for a bit of challenge? This just could be for you as it was for us. It's seems trail was long (no complains here as we love every step)and it was great to get to the lake and Lonesome Lake Hut. Stop over for lemonade. I recommend to continue the hike and go all the way to Cannon Mtn.... More

Let me preface by saying that this is not an easy hike. I've read reviews on a handful of websites and some people have said that this hike is "mostly flat" or "easy". I would love to know what superhero they are, but in any event I can assure you that this is not the case. While the loop around... More

We hiked up on a sunny, warm day in March. It probably was around 40 degrees, but it felt warmer on the way up. There was still snow and ice, so the micro spikes were a must. For an older, beginning hiker, it definitely got my heart pumping, but it was never too much work. And the hut at the... More

We were looking for a moderately challenging hike and we were so glad we picked this one. The round trip trail is supposedly three miles but our gps hike tracker clocked our zigzagging at close to five miles. The vertical gain up the hillside is some 1000 feet. At the top was a pristine, slightly frosty mountain lake, which is... More

Stunningly beautiful! Lonesome Lake (elevation 2,760') is accessible only by hiking up from either the Lafayette Campground or the Cascade Brook Trail (which is part of the Appalachian Trail). The only food available for purchase is from the AMC Lonesome Lake Hut. Typically they have soup and snacks only. Water bottles may be filled for free. Bathrooms (glorified outhouses, really)...
