It’s just a very very big hole in the ground not much more to say really, there is a very good walkway around it, worth it just to have a look
Really interesting look at gold mining through the ages. The open mine pit isn't currently in operation due to a major slip. The large historical exhibits are great to see.

WE nearly just drove through Waihi as it was along the route. Drove into town and discovered MIne Pit Rim Walkway. Very scenic, great pic opportunity and refreshing. The rockfall closed the opencast mine and it will be interesting to see if it opens again....More

An opportunity to see the size and depth of a mine. Unfortunately a rock fall on the north side has meant that the walk moves away from the rim but through interesting local plants and bushes.
We visited the pithead and walked around but did not walk the whole track. Showed some history of the mining town.
Well worth taking the time to visit this free attraction. A great walk around the rim if you are feeling fit. For others just a short walk from the main road to see the main pit.
